Former Michigan Athlete of the Week: Brandon Graham

Brandon Graham

Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Brandon Graham had a career day on Sunday. It helped that he was facing a terrible New York Jets offense. Graham made 6 tackles, 3 sacks, and 5 total hits on the quarterback in the 31-6 victory.

Here’s some video, but keep in mind that the Tweeter (Fran Duffy, whoever that is) is inaccurate with his comments. Just enjoy the moving pictures:

HONORABLE MENTION

  • Tom Brady, QB (New England Patriots): Brady completed 28/42 passes for 348 yards, 3 touchdowns, and 1 interception in a 33-7 win over the winless Washington Redskins.
  • Devin Bush, Jr., LB (Pittsburgh Steelers): Bush made 8 tackles and his first career interception in a 26-23 loss to the Baltimore Ravens.
  • Rashan Gary, OLB (Green Bay Packers): Gary made 3 tackles in a 34-24 win over the Dallas Cowboys.
  • Ryan Glasgow, DT (Cincinnati Bengals): Glasgow made 4 tackles in a 26-23 loss to the Arizona Cardinals.
  • Maurice Hurst, Jr., DT (Oakland Raiders): Hurst made 2 sacks in a 24-21 win over the Chicago Bears.

Zach Charbonnet

I barely have time to write my regular posts during the week, so here’s a quickie post about inside zone and some of the struggles Michigan is having.

First, here’s a bird’s eye view of Zach Charbonnet running inside zone:

Next, here’s a look at senior Tru Wilson running split zone:

Michigan 10, Iowa 3

Kwity Paye had 2.5 sacks (image via Detroit Free Press)

Enjoy Michigan football. I’ve seen a lot of complaints about Michigan’s offense, which we will indeed discuss. But those complaints are probably coming from a lot of the same people who have said Jim Harbaugh can’t win big games against tough opponents. Iowa was 4-0 and ranked #14 coming to Ann Arbor. It wasn’t a pretty win, but it counts the same in the Big Ten standings as a win over Ohio State or Rutgers.

Preview: Michigan vs. Iowa

RUSH OFFENSE vs. IOWA RUSH DEFENSE
Michigan is kinda bad at running the ball. They rank #94 nationally (131 yards/game), and the 3.48 yards per carry is even worse at #106. Those numbers could be better if the option runs were actually options, but Shea Patterson won’t keep the ball and Dylan McCaffrey got knocked out cold the last time he did. It doesn’t appear to matter who lines up at running back right now, because the offensive line doesn’t want to move anyone off the ball. Iowa is #10 in rushing defense (77 yards allowed/game) and #36 in yards allowed per carry (3.42). No team has topped 91 rushing yards this season. Senior linebacker Kristian Welch (6’1″, 239 lbs.) leads the team with 31 tackles, and sophomore Djimon Colbert (6’1″, 235) is second with 23. Sophomore defensive tackle Daviyon Nixon (6’3″, 309) leads the squad with 2.5 tackles for loss. This looks like a bad matchup for the Wolverines.
Advantage: Iowa
