Recruiting Update: October 16, 2014

Detroit (MI) King wide receiver Donnie Corley

ADDED TO THE BOARD: 2016
Detroit (MI) King wide receiver Donnie Corley was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’2″, 172 lb. player with offers from Arizona State, Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Notre Dame, and Pitt, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 4-star, the #43 wide receiver, #238 overall, and #5 in-state. Corley transferred from Wyandotte (MI) Roosevelt after his sophomore year, so he has increased his exposure while also playing with better talent. Michigan has not forayed into Detroit King often over the last several years, as they have offered (and received a commitment from) just two players since 2008, current slot receiver/kick returner Dennis Norfleet and 2015 Michigan State commit Tyriq Thompson. Corley is a physical wideout who I think can be a solid player at the next level, but I believe Michigan is probably playing slightly from behind in his recruitment.

Hit the jump for an addition to the 2017 recruiting board, some recent commitments elsewhere, and some miscellaneous bits.

ADDED TO THE BOARD: 2017
Norfolk (VA) Lake Taylor defensive tackle Darnell Ewell was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’4″, 280 lb. prospect with offers from Clemson, Miami, Ohio State, Pitt, Tennessee, and Virginia, among others.

OFF THE BOARD

Kaplan (LA) Kaplan defensive end Jalen Bates committed to Arizona State. Bates is the cousin of former Michigan linebacker Jonas Mouton, and while Bates had developed a relationship with the staff, he was unlikely to be a Wolverine all along.

Lincolnton (NC) Lincolnton defensive end Darian Roseboro committed to North Carolina State. He originally committed to Michigan, despite the fact that some of his family members wanted him to stay closer to home. With Michigan’s struggles, a 4-0 start for the Wolfpack, and a near upset against Florida State, you can see why he might flip. Roseboro plans to enroll in January, so any attempts to flip him back will have to be hurried. Regardless of any efforts, I imagine he’ll stick with his commitment this time.

Hopewell (VA) Hopewell defensive end Darrell Taylor committed to Tennessee. Michigan was never in the running.

Monaca (PA) Central Valley cornerback Jordan Whitehead committed to Pitt over the likes of Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State, and Penn State, among others.

ADDED TO THE BOARD: 2015
Lincolnton (NC) Lincolnton defensive end Darian Roseboro decommitted from Michigan.

ADDED TO THE BOARD: 2016
Naples (FL) Naples running back Carlin Fils-Aime was offered by Michigan. He’s a 5’11”, 175 lb. prospect with an offer from Miami. As a sophomore in 2013, he carried the ball 92 times for 873 yards and 15 touchdowns. He claims a 4.57 forty and a 38.5″ vertical.

Thousand Oaks (CA) Oaks Christian wide receiver Theo Howard was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’0″, 170 lb. prospect with offers from San Diego State, UCLA, and Washington State. He’s a 247 Composite 3-star, the #77 wide receiver, and #471 overall. As a sophomore in 2013, he caught 22 balls for 400 yards and 6 touchdowns. He’s a shifty receiver who lacks blazing speed.

Hit the jump for players who have committed elsewhere, plus some miscellaneous tidbits.

OFF THE BOARD
Virginia Beach (VA) Ocean Lakes athlete Jaason Lewis committed to Arizona State. Lewis was previously committed to UCLA. I have seen numerous suggestions that his highest upside would be as a linebacker, and I agree, but he reportedly wants to stay on offense. If that sticks, he would probably be an H-back type of player.

Pulaski (TN) Giles County cornerback Cameron Ordway committed to Ole Miss.

Lexington (NC) North Davidson defensive tackle Shy Tuttle committed to Tennessee. Tuttle was one of Michigan’s earliest offers in the class, but he was never particularly serious about exploring the option of coming north.

Coppell (TX) Coppell center Connor Williams committed to Texas. Williams is one of those players who could play any position on the line from tight end to center. Michigan was reportedly looking at him as an interior offensive lineman, and while he showed interest shortly after the offer, he never pursued it further.

Darian Roseboro

COMMITMENT
Lincolnton (NC) Lincolnton defensive end Darian Roseboro committed to Michigan (LINK).

ADDED TO THE BOARD: 2016
Towson (MD) St. Frances Academy defensive end Rahshaun Smith was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’3″, 225 lb. prospect with offers from Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Maryland, Ohio State, Oklahoma, and Virginia Tech, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 4-star, the #3 weakside end, and #50 overall. Smith has excellent get-off, long arms, and good change of direction, but he’s raw and needs to learn to play with leverage and using his hands. He appears to be wide open, has visited several schools, and could end up anywhere.

OFF THE BOARD

Memphis (TN) Whitehaven linebacker Joshua McMillon committed to Alabama. He was down to Michigan and the Crimson Tide, but when he decided not to visit for the late July BBQ at the Big House, the writing was on the wall.

MISCELLANEOUS
Richmond (VA) St. Christopher’s cornerback Garrett Taylor tore his ACL in pre-season practice, so he will miss the 2014 season. Taylor, in case you didn’t know, is a 2015 Michigan commit. With the way ACL recoveries go, he should be ready to play by his freshman year in college.

Darian Roseboro, Wolverine

Darian Roseboro (image via Gaston Gazette)

Lincolnton (NC) Lincolnton defensive end Darian Roseboro committed to Michigan on Friday. He chose the Wolverines over offers from Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Notre Dame, Ohio State, and numerous others.

Roseboro stands 6’4″, 283 lbs. and claims a 4.64 forty. As a junior in 2013, he made 125 tackles, 21 tackles for loss, 10 sacks, and 7 pass breakups. When he was a sophomore, he had 110 tackles, 32 tackles for loss, 9 sacks, 4 pass breakups, and 4 fumble recoveries. As a freshman, he had 107 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, and 7 sacks.

RATINGS
ESPN: 4-star, 82 grade, #20 defensive tackle, #165 overall
Rivals: 4-star, #6 defensive tackle, #42 overall
Scout: 4-star, #14 defensive tackle, #151 overall
247 Sports: 4-star, 93 grade, #6 strongside end, #157 overall

Roseboro was offered in May of 2013, and he had been a recruiting priority for the Wolverines from that time onward. He visited Michigan in March and then again in July for the BBQ at the Big House. His final selection came down to Michigan and the North Carolina State Wolfpack, a team that had the hometown advantage (NC State is roughly 3 hours from Lincolnton, whereas UNC is over 4 hours). Now he plans to enroll early at Michigan, beginning in January.

Roseboro has a thick frame with a generous amount of weight in the lower half and a fairly lean upper half. He has a good first step, and he keeps his pad level low when coming out of his stance. He uses his hands consistently to shed blockers and does a good job of finding the ball. He also appears to be a high-motor player who can chase and make hustle plays. Lincolnton uses him as one of their backs in the wishbone, so he has some decent agility but is not what you would call a dynamic runner.

Depending on what position Roseboro plays, quickness may be an issue. He lacks the speed to consistently be an edge rusher. Furthermore, he needs to improve his hand placement and pass rush moves, fundamentals that are a little loose at this juncture.

Overall, I believe Roseboro has a high ceiling as a defensive tackle/strongside end tweener. He doesn’t have a lot of body fat, which makes me think that he will grow into a defensive tackle once he adds muscle in a college strength and conditioning program. To play defensive end, I believe Michigan would have to move back to a 4-3 Under defense where he could play the 5-tech; whether Michigan wants to permanently stick with the 4-3 Over remains to be seen. Regardless, Roseboro can find a home in either iteration, so it’s not a huge concern. He reminds me a little bit of Glen Steele, a guy who can make plays off the edge with his motor or make a move inside with his strength.

Roseboro is Michigan’s eleventh commitment in the class of 2015 and the first from North Carolina since Channing Stribling in 2013. Michigan technically only has about eleven spots in the class, but that number always increases. Meanwhile, Michigan is a little short on rush ends, so they will continue to recruit players like California’s Keisean Lucier-South. I do not believe any more defensive tackles or strongside end types are necessary.

TTB Rating: 82 (ratings explanation)
