ADDED TO THE BOARD: 2018

Washington (DC) H.D. Woodson cornerback Noah Boykin was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’2″, 170 lb. prospect with offers from Clemson, Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina, and Oklahoma, among others. He’s a 3-star, the #45 cornerback, and #447 overall. He’s a tall corner prospect who could also play wide receiver or safety in college.

Jensen Beach (FL) Jensen Beach safety Jamien Sherwood was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’2″, 195 lb. prospect with offers from Auburn, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, LSU, Miami, Oklahoma, and Oregon, among others. He’s a 3-star, the #32 safety, and #392 overall. He’s a large safety prospect who might grow into an outside linebacker.

Hit the jump for several players who went off the board to other schools.

OFF THE BOARD

Clearwater (FL) Calvary Christian safety Amari Burney committed to Florida. He was not considered to be an option for Michigan.

Duluth (GA) North Gwinnett offensive guard Warren Ericson committed to Georgia. He was somewhat interested in playing for the Wolverines, but when the home-state Bulldogs want you, it’s tough to escape.

Carthage (TX) Carthage running back Keaontay Ingram committed to Texas. He’s the #10 running back and #199 overall, and I had been working on a scouting report on him. He’s one of my favorite running backs in the class and runs with a tough, downhill style.

Virginia Beach (VA) Bishop Sullivan linebacker Teradja Mitchell committed to Ohio State. This was a bit of an upset, since the Virginia Beach area typically sends a lot of prospects to Florida State. The Seminoles held 60% of the Crystal Ball picks (to OSU’s 40%) at the time of his commitment. He had named Michigan to his top 11 at one point, but he never visited Ann Arbor.

Katy (TX) Taylor defensive end Max Wright committed to Texas A&M. He’s the #3 strongside end and #84 overall. Like Mitchell, Wright had also named Michigan to his top 11 without visiting.

I think the question posed in the title is an interesting one.

If you’re 5’11, you’re more likely to be a safety than an outside corner these days. Maybe even a linebacker!

Certainly seems like many smaller DBs are being viewed as nickel-backs unless they have elite coverage skills (a la Jourdan Lewis).

Even Lewis had pretty good length for his height. Like with basketball players I think it’d be great to know wingspan, since that’s probably more important than height.

wright wouldve been a real nice addition, though obviously very little legit chance of it happening.

boykin can play, impressive athlete. surprising they waited so long to offer him (maybe they just got around to seriously reviewing his tape or were looking for clarification on a certain issue, who knows). hell be interesting to follow, depending on where he ends up going and what position he could be a player.

encouraging to see m still offering DTs and DBs given their depth issues. they mightve missed on several top targets but they recognize the need and appear to want to add additional DTs and DBs (which is great)
