2018 Recruiting Grades: Defense
I posted the grades for Michigan’s offense yesterday (LINK). Here’s a look at how I view the defense:
I posted the grades for Michigan’s offense yesterday (LINK). Here’s a look at how I view the defense:
Adam Berghorst – DE – Zeeland (MI) East: Berghorst is a 6’7″, 245 lb. prospect with offers from Kentucky, Michigan, and Michigan State, among others. He’s a 3-star, the #40 strongside end, and #525 overall, according to 247 Sports.
Lance Dixon – LB – West Bloomfield (MI) West Bloomfield: Dixon is a 6’2″, 195 lb. prospect with offers from Michigan, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Ohio State, and Penn State, among others. He’s a 3-star, the #25 outside linebacker, and #430 overall. He plays for a former Wolverine (Ronald Bellamy), and Michigan has extended offers to several of his teammates, including WR Tre Mosley, LB Cornell Wheeler, and S Makari Page.(February 8)
Kenyatta Watson II – S – Loganville (GA) Grayson: Watson is a 6’2″, 177 lb. prospect with offers from Auburn, Florida State, Georgia, LSU, and Michigan, among others. He’s a 4-star, the #13 safety, and #216 overall. Grayson is a powerhouse program in Georgia, and it’s where Michigan running back Kurt Taylor spent his senior season. UPDATE: Watson did not end up making the trip.
Makari Paige – S – West Bloomfield (MI) West Bloomfield: Paige is a 6’3″, 182 lb. prospect with offers from Boston College, Kentucky, and Michigan, among others. He’s a teammate of Dixon (see above).
The 2018 recruiting class has wrapped up, and it ended with a resounding thud. While I have yet to assign final TTB Ratings for the class, I will dare to give a grade for the position groups.
Michigan has offered a bunch of new in-state players for the 2019 and 2020 classes, and it seems out of character for the Wolverines, especially for Jim Harbaugh’s staff. There have been rumors that Harbaugh (and others within the program) have realized that their recruiting in 2018 has not been up to snuff, and there have been complaints for several years that Harbaugh was ignoring the midwest – particularly Ohio – in favor of spending a lot of time recruiting Florida, California, Texas, Alabama, etc., which are more difficult to recruit, for obvious geographical reasons, along with some other reasons.
First, here’s a look at the numbers, from Brady Hoke’s final full class through 2021 so far:
Here’s a list of uncommitted players, which I will update throughout the day as players sign:
