Floyds Knob (IN) Floyd Central kicker Cole Hussung committed to Michigan on Wednesday.

Hussung is coming in as a preferred walk-on. He is not rated by 247 Sports, but Kornblue Kicking ranks him as a 5-star and the #6 high school kicker in the 2020 class, so that’s nice. Word on the street is that he made 23 field goals from beyond 60 yards and averaged 102.3 yards per punt with just 1 touchback.

I generally do not give much attention to kickers because they’re hard to gauge, but a 5-star kicker could be really good to have. Or some other guy playing rugby in New Zealand could swoop in and take his spot. So take it all with a grain of salt.

So, I guess he might want to take a little bit off his punts if he’s averaging 102.3 yds per. Gonna be too many touchbacks… everytime!

Since no one wants my opinion, here it is. I would rather we get a consistent kicker who makes everything within 40 yards than one with a leg that can kick it from 70 yds. Big leg doesn’t mean big lead. There just aren’t many opportunities for 50+ yd field goals. Yes, Nordin was more consistent last year but I still see him as the strong legged Frosh who could barely kick an extra point over the linemen. These power kickers are typically not accurate. I would prefer them to take some walk-ons (Hussong was basically guaranteed eventual scholarship), prove themselves in practice and, if they can win the job, give them a scholarship.

Finally, Kornblue BLOWS. It seems like every year he has given us crap and sold it Slurpees. Robbins was the best Punter he’s every seen and now rides the bench. KornBLOW is an amazing salesman but I don’t trust his evaluations. I think he makes these kids pay for HIS camp ($350 for 1 day) with the expectation that he’ll try to promote these kids to schools. It’s different when a kid goes to a camp and is evaluated by multiple schools. When 1 guy gives you rankings you don’t exactly have a clear evaluation for yourself.

His 1st highlight is his ball bouncing 25 yds. Not many highlights for a 5 star kicker/punter.

My other buddy from Clemson hit a punt 63+ yards in a game … this was before they were good. Problem was he hit it from his own 45.

It’s one of my favorite stories ever. He felt like he had room to hit it hard and put it in the corner, except he hit it with about the best rhythm of his life, crushed it and put it 8 yards deep in the end zone.

    I love sports.
