During the season, I like to keep readers updated on what’s happening with former commits, players, and head coaches. But there’s not enough time – and it’s frankly not interesting enough – to keep up with all the former assistant coaches who are assistants elsewhere. So in the off-season, I like to do a little catching up on where former coaches are now. I am also including in this rundown a look at where some former Michigan players are now coaching, mostly in the college and professional ranks.
FORMER COACHES
Joe Bolden (Special Teams Coordinator/Defensive Assistant, Tulsa): Bolden spent one year as OLB coach and special teams coordinator for the Nevada Wolfpack and is now in a similar role at Tulsa, though he’s only listed as a “defensive assistant” and special teams coordinator.
Don Brown (Head Coach, UMass): Brown went 1-11 in the first season of his second stint as the head coach at UMass.
Anthony Campanile (Linebackers Coach, Miami Dolphins): Campanile is heading into his fourth year as the Dolphins’ linebackers coach.
Ross Douglas (Assistant Wide Receivers Coach, New England Patriots): Douglas is going into his second year as an assistant wide receivers coach for the Patriots.

Tim Drevno (Offensve Line Coach, UCLA): Drevno is going into his second year as the offensive line coach at UCLA.
Ron English (Defensive Coordinator, Louisville): English spent the past two seasons as co-defensive coordinator at Purdue, but when Boilermakers head coach Jeff Brohm departed for Louisville, he brought English with him as the DC.
Jedd Fisch (Head Coach, Arizona): Arizona went 5-7 in 2022. He is now 6-18 in two seasons as the Wildcats head coach.
Greg Frey (Tight Ends Coach, Tulsa): Frey is entering his first season as Tulsa’s tight ends coach after spending 2022 as an analyst at South Alabama.
Greg Froelich (Special Teams Coordinator/Running Backs Coach, Charlotte): The former Michigan walk-on is entering his first season as the STC and running backs coach for the Charlotte 49ers.
Allen Gant (Defensive Coordinator, Fordham): Gant was a defensive assistant at Fordham in 2022 and was promoted this off-season to defensive coordinator. He was also a defensive coordinator at Division III West Virginia Wesleyan earlier in his career.
Josh Gattis (Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks Coach, Maryland): Gattis was fired from his job at Miami after one season but was hired by Maryland recently to help coordinate Mike Locksley’s offense.
Pep Hamilton (Offensive Coordinator, Houston Texans): Hamilton was not retained following the 2022 season and his next step is unknown at this time.
Brady Hoke (Head Coach, San Diego State): SDSU went 7-6 in 2022. Hoke is now 36-24 as the head coach of the Aztecs, including his stints from 2009-2010 and 2020-2022.
Brian Jean-Mary (Linebackers Coach, Tennessee): Jean-Mary is entering his third season as linebackers coach at Tennessee.
Jordan Kovacs (Assistant Linebackers Coach, Cincinnati Bengals): Kovacs is an assistant linebackers coach for the Bengals.
Mo Linguist (Head Coach, Buffalo): Buffalo went 7-6 in 2022 and Linguist is now 11-14 after two seasons as a head man.
Scot Loeffler (Head Coach, Bowling Green State): BGSU went 6-7 in 2022 and Loeffler has yet to have a winning season over his four years with the Falcons. However, he has shown growth from 3 to 0 to 4 to 6 victories during that stretch (and his 0-fer was the 2020 COVID season, which might as well not have happened).
Mike Macdonald (Defensive Coordinator, Baltimore Ravens): Macdonald spent one season at Michigan in 2021 as the defensive coordinator, and he’s going into his second year as the Ravens’ defensive coordinator under John Harbaugh.
Calvin Magee (Offensive Coordinator, Jacksonville State): In case you missed the news, Magee sadly passed away after having a heart attack in May 2022. He was 59 years old and working under former Michigan head man Rich Rodriguez at the time.
Curt Mallory (Head Coach, Indiana State): The Sycamores went 2-9 in 2022 and Mallory is now 19-37 as the head coach.
Roy Manning (Outside Linebackers Coach/Assistant Head Coach, USC): Manning is entering his second season as outside linebackers coach and is the assistant head coach to Lincoln Riley at USC.
Mike McCray II (Outside Linebackers Coach, UMass): McCray is entering his second season as the OLB coach for UMass, where he works under his former defensive coordinator at Michigan, Don Brown.
Ben McDaniels (Quarterbacks Coach/Passing Game Coordinator, Houston Texans): McDaniels is going into his second year as QB coach and passing game coordinator for the Texans.
Jim McElwain (Head Coach, Central Michigan): Central Michigan went 4-8 this past season, which was an uncharacteristically bad one for McElwain. He went 4-8 in his first season at Colorado State and 3-4 before getting fired mid-season at Florida, but his seven other seasons have been winning years. He is now 24-21 in four seasons at CMU.
Desmond Morgan (Defensive Assistant, Memphis): Morgan was previously the linebackers coach under Curt Mallory at Indiana State, and he is now a defensive assistant for the Memphis Tigers.
Shaun Nua (Defensive Line Coach, USC): Nua is entering his second season as USC’s defensive line coach.
Doug Nussmeier (Quarterbacks Coach, San Diego Chargers): Nussmeier spent the previous three seasons with the Dallas Cowboys, but with the ouster of the offensive coordinator, Nussmeier also took off and is now the QB coach for the Chargers.
Ryan Osborn (Defensive Coordinator, Charlotte): Osborn, a former analyst at Michigan who got the Wolverines in some hot water by doing some on-the-field coaching, is now the defensive coordinator at Charlotte, as well as coaching the outside linebackers.
Biff Poggi (Head Coach, Charlotte): Poggi never coached at Michigan, but he did have two stints as an off-the-field staff member under Jim Harbaugh. He is going into his first year as the head coach at Charlotte.
Rich Rodriguez (Head Coach, Jacksonville State): JSU went 9-2 in 2022.
James Ross III (Linebackers Coach, Tulane): Ross spent 2022 as the outside linebackers coach for the Cincinnati Bearcats and was recently hired as the linebackers coach for the Tulane Green Wave.
Roy Roundtree (Wide Receivers Coach, McNeese State): Roundtree spent three seasons at Grand Valley State and is now the wide receivers coach at McNeese State.
Ed Warinner (Offensive Line Coach, Florida Atlantic): Warinner is going into his third season as FAU’s offensive line coach.
Al Washington (Defensive Line Coach, Notre Dame): Al Washington is entering his second season at Notre Dame. He coaches the defensive line and is the defensive run game coordinator.
Tyrone Wheatley (Head Coach, Wayne State): Wheatley spent 2022 as the running backs coach for the Denver Broncos, but he took the head coaching job at Wayne State in the off-season. Wheatley went 5-18 during his only former head coaching job, at Morgan State from 2019-2021.
