Logan Tuley-Tillman

Redshirt sophomore offensive tackle Logan Tuley-Tillman has been kicked off of the team. The 6’7″, 309 lb. Tuley-Tillman played in just two games during his career, including the season opener against Utah a week ago.

Tuley-Tillman was a part of Michigan’s 2013 recruiting class, one of six offensive linemen to sign with the Wolverines that year. I guess I created a bit of a stink when he committed in February 2012 (LINK), because I said it looked like he had not had quality offensive line coaching in high school. Technique continued to be an issue into his college years, and while we didn’t see much of him in game action, the spring and scrimmage videos showed continued issues there. Despite being larger and a year older, he was beaten out for the left tackle job by true freshman Mason Cole in 2014. Cole maintained the job this season, so Tuley-Tillman was likely looking at two more seasons coming off the bench behind Cole and right tackle Erik Magnuson.

I had actually heard rumors over the summer that Tuley-Tillman was looking to transfer, so his departure isn’t a huge surprise. The surprising part, obviously, is that he did something to get dismissed from the team after the season began a week ago. In cases like this, it often seems that legal issues leak out in the following days, although I haven’t heard of anything specific yet.

Regardless, Michigan is now down an offensive tackle and the line positions are almost dangerously thin. Of the six linemen in that 2013 class, only two remain – backup guard David Dawson and backup center Patrick Kugler. Chris Fox retired, Dan Samuelson transferred to a destination unknown, and Kyle Bosch transferred to West Virginia. Aside from Cole and Magnuson, Michigan has zero true tackles who are not freshmen. If any injuries occur at tackle this season, Michigan will have to reshuffle its offensive line (Ben Braden started at right tackle last year, and Graham Glasgow has practiced at every position) or insert someone like redshirt junior Blake Bars, who has played sparingly so far in his career.
