Recruiting Snapshot: Purdue

January 6, 2016

Bradenton (FL) IMG Academy RB Jack Wegher

2016 Team Ranking: #73. Purdue has eleven 3-stars and four 2-stars committed.

Cream of 2016 Crop: Purdue has taken the route of signing three JUCO players to prop up their recruiting efforts, so arguably the best two players in the class are San Francisco (CA) City College DE Austin Larkin (3-star, #8 WDE, #114 JUCO) and Rochester (NY) Monroe Community College CB Kamal Hardy (3-star, #12 CB, #117 JUCO). The highest-rated high school player is Lewis Center (OH) Olentangy OT Luke Campbell (3-star, #106 OT), so you can see why they have to raid junior colleges. A couple other notable players are Houston (TX) St. Thomas DT Lorenzo Neal, the son of the former NFL fullback with the same name, and Bradenton (FL) IMG Academy RB Jack Wegher (see below), the brother of former Iowa running back Brandon Wegher.

2017 Team Ranking: Unranked. Purdue has zero commits for 2017.

Hey thunder what’s your take on how peters and how he’s done so far at the army practice do u think he have a shot on being a 5 star I think he will be on 247 if he have a good game…and there were talk that the main reason we had that camp in cali was cause of Kelly what happen in his recruitment that michigan seem to completely gives up on him especially since he’s the highest player we were recruiting at the position n a 5 star across the board thanks.

I do not think he’ll be a 5-star when all is said and done. I think he’ll be a high 4-star. But who knows? If he goes out and has an awesome game on Saturday, then there’s a chance. I just think that might be too big of a leap for him to make. I’ve also heard mixed reviews on him so far at practices, so to get that fifth star, I would think he’d have to go in there and tear things up all week. We’ll see.

I think the idea that Michigan set up a camp in California just for Caleb Kelly has been a bit overblown. Yes, they were recruiting him, and they set up a camp in his hometown. However, Michigan was going all over the country, and it makes sense to hold a camp in the Fresno area. It was likely an attempt to keep relations open between Michigan’s coaching staff and the West Coast, rather than an attempt to woo one guy. As for Kelly himself, I’ve been pretty consistent in saying that I don’t see Kelly as a 5-star prospect. After I made that observation, I started to see “insiders” suggesting that Michigan’s coaching staff also did not value Kelly as highly. Not that I influenced them, but I just think it might have been a case where Kelly was underwhelming and the coaches decided to concentrate elsewhere. He was originally recruited as a Buck linebacker, but then the coaches told him that they might try him out at other spots, too…and then they stopped recruiting him. I think perhaps Michigan filled up at the Buck OLB/DE hybrid and had better inside linebacker targets (like Bush, Jackson, Jones, etc.). It could potentially be a Terrance Davis-like situation, where Michigan filled up at guard, wanted an OT to finish out the class, and just kind of moved in another direction. Kelly’s not the only player to have been dropped by the staff – Lamar Jackson was in a similar situation where he had the Wolverines high on his list, and then they stopped going after him.
