Recruiting Update: August 17, 2015

Norcross (GA) Greater Atlanta Christian quarterback Davis Mills

A note on offer board updates: A new website means new rules, so new offers, commitments, and decommitments will be listed in the comments section at the bottom of the offer boards. So if you scroll to the bottom of each offer page, you can see the most recent developments in those areas.

ADDED TO THE BOARD: 2016
Thousand Oaks (CA) Westlake wide receiver Theo Howard decommitted from Oregon. He’s a 6’0″, 170 lb. prospect who’s a 247 Composite 4-star, the #16 wide receiver, and #111 overall. At one time he was considered to be one of the California crew who could end up at Michigan (along with quarterback K.J. Costello and others), but now it looks like USC has moved in on the former Duck commit. This could potentially help Michigan in some areas, because if USC fills up at wide receiver, the Wolverines could end up with some of the leftovers.

ADDED TO THE BOARD: 2017
Norcross (GA) Greater Atlanta Christian quarterback Davis Mills was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’3″, 189 lb. prospect with offers from Arizona State, Miami, and Stanford, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 4-star, the #5 pro-style quarterback, and #86 overall. As a sophomore in 2014, he completed 67% of his passes for 2,267 yards and 26 touchdowns; he also has 313 rushing yards and 6 touchdowns. Mills is definitely a pro-style guy who can move in the pocket a little bit, but he won’t be a big run threat at the next level. He throws a nice deep ball and anticipates coverages well. Georgia and Stanford appear to be the favorites so far.

Hit the jump for a couple guys who committed elsewhere and some random tidbits.

OFF THE BOARD
Laurinburg (NC) Scotland County linebacker Jonathan Smith committed to North Carolina. He had visited Michigan over the summer, but it seemed like Duke was trending recently. However, UNC had been the early favorite, so I guess he ended up where most people expected him to.

Eden Prairie (MN) Eden Prairie athlete J.D. Spielman committed to Nebraska. The nephew of former Detroit Lion Chris Spielman (and the son of Minnesota Vikings general manager Rick Spielman) had Michigan in his top five and visited back in the spring, but a recent visit to Lincoln followed almost immediately by an announcement date was the writing on the wall. He will play slot receiver for the Cornhuskers.

MISCELLANEOUS
Las Vegas (NV) Bishop Gorman wide receiver Cordell Broadus was a 2015 football prospect who signed with UCLA. Over the weekend, it was announced that he was quitting football. This is mainly noteworthy because he’s the son of rapper Snoop Dogg, but he also happened to be pretty good at football. He was 6’2″, 200 lbs. and was a 247 Composite 4-star, the #26 wide receiver, and #226 overall. The reason I mention it here on a Michigan blog is that he spoke of interest in Michigan after Jim Harbaugh was hired. The Wolverines never extended an offer, but perhaps the Michigan faithful will turn out to be lucky that Harbaugh offered a mid-level 3-star like Grant Perry instead.

Lakeland (FL) Lake Gibson defensive tackle Keyshon Camp will take an official visit to Michigan for the UNLV game on Septebmer 19, 2015. Camp is committed to USC, but his former teammate is freshman defensive end Reuben Jones, and one of his coaches at Lake Gibson is former Michigan offensive guard Ricky Barnum.

Rancho Santa Margarita (CA) Catholic wide receiver Dylan Crawford will announce a top five by the end of summer, and Michigan will be one of them. Crawford is now a teammate of K.J. Costello (Stanford), a U.S. Army All-American, and the #90 overall player in the class.

Montgomery (AL) Carver defensive end Marlon Davidson set a decision date for September 4, 2015. This is bad news for Michigan, but presumably also bad for everyone except Auburn. Davidson had actually said he would visit on June 19 at one point, then he said it would be July 19, and then he ended up visiting Georgia on July 19 instead. He went to Michigan’s satellite camp in June, but that appears to be as close to Michigan as he’ll get.

Elbertson (GA) Elbert County athlete Mecole Hardman placed Michigan in his top ten. Hardman could play wide receiver, cornerback, or safety at the next level. He’s a 247 Composite 5-star, the #1 athlete, and #27 overall.

Ellenwood (GA) Cedar Grove linebacker Elysee Mbem-Bosse placed Michigan in his top five. Mbem-Bosse is the #12 inside linebacker and #386 overall. He is another player who is expected to end up at Auburn, but Michigan needs linebackers in this class and he could be a good one.

Bradenton (FL) IMG Academy tight end Isaac Nauta will take an official visit for the Michigan State game on October 17, 2015. Nauta mentioned Michigan often early in his recruitment, but then he committed to Florida State. He seems to be destined for Georgia now after decommitting from the Seminoles, but he has said that he will let the process play out, so perhaps Michigan will have time to sway him. While Michigan fans have reason to worry that Philadelphia (PA) Imhotep tight end Naseir Upshur will end up in Tallahassee now, Nauta would be an upgrade if the Wolverines could pull him in.

Will we see an increase in WR talent ( I mean stand out WR talent) if Harbaugh can improve the QB play? If the OL can improve this year to a better than average group we should see solid gains in both the QB play and RB play. There is plenty of 4/5* talent sitting there waiting for the line to emerge.

Yep, it’s easy to think about players and even position groups in silos (i.e. how will THIS player/position pan out?). Hopefully we see one improvement lead to another this year. THE TEAM THE TEAM THE TEAM
