2016 slot receiver Sam Bruce

Miami head coach Al Golden was fired on Sunday after the school’s worst-ever loss, a 58-0 setback to Clemson. Interim head coach Larry Scott is unlikely to be the long-term fix, so there may be a big opportunity for other teams to poach current players and commits. Michigan has made several offers in the Sunshine State over the past couple years, so they have crossed paths with several Miami commits and players. Here’s a look at who Michigan has pursued or could pursue.

2015 Miami underclassmen offered by Michigan: OT K.C. McDermott (So.), DT Kendrick Norton (Fr.), LB Darrion Owens (So.)
2016 Miami commits with Michigan offers:
WR Sam Bruce, ATH Evan Hinson, WR Michael Irvin Jr., DE Joseph Jackson, LB Shaquille Quarterman
2017 Miami commits with Michigan offers: None
2018 Miami commits with Michigan offers: None

That list of 2017 and 2018 commits is a little bit misleading, because it’s still fairly early for 2017 offers and very early for 2018 offers. Miami currently has 11 commits in the 2017 class and 6 for 2018, so they are/were way ahead of the game. (By comparison, Michigan has 3 commits for 2017 and 0 for 2018.) I would not be surprised to see Michigan go after 2017 tight end Tre McKitty, 2017 running back Robert Burns, 2017 linebacker Jason Dunning, and 2018 cornerback Al Blades, among others.

As for the 2016 class, none of those players have visited Michigan or expressed much interest. Sam Bruce is an intriguing player who was offered by Brady Hoke’s staff, and he’s a slot guy who could do some things that not many of the players on the current roster can do. Jim Harbaugh offered Evan Hinson – as well as his younger brother, Blake – so they may try to wedge themselves back in the battle for him. Hinson is someone who could play wide receiver, tight end, outside linebacker, or defensive end at the next level.

Can we beat IU, Penn St. or Ohio State without throwing 40 times?

I think we can beat Indiana without throwing 40 times. The thing is, with the pace we play football, there aren’t going to be a ton of opportunities to throw the ball 40 times. We run the ball and control the clock. If we have enough chances to throw 40 times, it’s because the opposing team is having short drives. But I do think we’ll have to be successful throwing the ball against Ohio State and Penn State. I think we can run on Indiana.

State could not run vs. IU? Is their line ‘that’ banged up? How do you think we can run effectively? IU scares me more than any team left on the schedule with the exception of Ohio St.

Indiana has a mediocre rushing defense. They’re #69 in rushing yardage and #90 in yards/carry against them. I think Michigan State’s health at OL and RB is hurting them, but I don’t really know why they couldn’t run against Indiana other than that (I’m not an MSU expert). We’ve averaged 4.4 yards/carry or more against everyone except Utah and Michigan State, so I think we’ll be okay against Indiana.

Michael Irvin, Jr.? Insert I feel old comment. Something tells me he’s going to stick with his commitment…
