Schools in the News: Maryland, South Carolina, USC

October 12, 2015

So long, and thanks for all the golf.

Maryland fired Randy Edsall, Steve Spurrier retired effective immediately from South Carolina, and the other USC fired Steve Sarkisian, who has even more of a reason to drink now. As Michigan continues to recruit for 2016 and beyond, here’s a look at the offered players who are committed to those schools

MARYLAND
2016 commits: QB Dwayne Haskins, Jr.
Scoop: Michigan has two quarterback commits for 2016 in Brandon Peters and Victor Viramontes. At this time, Haskins says he’s still strongly committed to Maryland, and the Wolverines are probably not searching for a QB.

SOUTH CAROLINA
2016 commits: S J.J. Givens
Scoop: Michigan was not heavily involved in the recruitment of Virginian J.J. Givens in the first place, so it’s unlikely that a coaching change for the Gamecocks would pay dividends for the Wolverines.

USC
2016 commits: TE Cary Angeline, DT Keyshon Camp, WR Josh Imatorbhebhe, LB Mique Juarez, OT Frank Martin II, S C.J. Pollard, WR Trevon Sidney
Scoop: The firing of Steve Sarkisian opens the most doors for Michigan. Obviously, a new coach could very well maintain what the Trojans already have. But there is bound to be attrition just based on the uncertainty of the program, let alone a potential change in the systems. Florida defensive tackle Keyshon Camp already took an official visit to Michigan and is a former teammate of Michigan freshman defensive end Reuben Jones. Michigan tried to make a hard push for Pennsylvanian Cary Angeline, and the Wolverines’ use of tight ends could be convincing. California linebacker Mique Juarez has already said that he will visit Michigan this year. Meanwhile, Californians Frank Martin, C.J. Pollard, and Trevon Sidney were all initially excited about their Michigan offers before committing to the Trojans. The Wolverines were also close to offering California offensive tackle Nathan Smith just before he committed to USC.

Danny Wuerfel’s tweet had me laughing all night.

It seems that having just thrown a pick, Spurrier told Wuerfel, “Danny, It’s not your fault…It’s my fault for putting you in the game.”
