Recruiting Update: January 30, 2012

Phoenix (AZ) Brophy Prep wide receiver Devon Allen (#85)

ADDED TO THE BOARD (2012, 2013, 2014)
Phoenix (AZ) Brophy Prep wide receiver Devon Allen, a 2013 prospect, received a Michigan offer last week.  Allen is a 6’1″, 190 lb. wideout who claims 4.5 speed but appears not to be a huge breakaway threat.  However, he’s an excellent route runner, shifty enough to make somebody miss here or there, and a very good blocker for a wide receiver.  As a junior, he had 44 receptions for 844 yards and 17 touchdowns and 26 carries for 228 yards.  He also holds offers from Arizona (where he’s being recruited by former Michigan coach Tony Dews), Arizona State, Oregon State, Purdue, Stanford, and a few others.

Woodbridge (VA) Woodbridge defensive end Da’Shawn Hand, a 2014 prospect, was offered by Michigan.  Hand is 6’5″, 245 lbs. as a high school sophomore, so it’s likely that he grows into a defensive tackle by the time he finishes high school.  He had 84 tackles and 21 sacks during his sophomore season.

Cleveland (OH) Glenville defensive tackle Willie Henry visited Michigan’s campus this past weekend and received a Michigan offer.  He’s a 6’2″, 270 lb. athlete with offers from Hawaii, Illinois, Louisville, Pitt, and a bunch of MAC (or MAC-level) schools.  You can see in Henry’s film that he’s an athletic kid with a pretty good motor (witness him chasing down running plays on defense and sprinting downfield to throw blocks on offense).  However, he’s a little light, needs to add some strength, and really  needs to learn the fundamentals of defeating blocks.

Bealeton (VA) Liberty defensive end Wyatt Teller, a 2013 prospect, was offered by Michigan last week.  He’s a 6’5″, 250 lb. kid with offers from Penn State, Tennessee, Virginia Tech, and several other programs.  He also claims a 325 lb. bench and a 400 lb. squat, which are pretty good measurables for a high school junior.

OFF THE BOARD

Elk Grove (CA) Pleasant Grove jumbo athlete Arik Armstead committed to Oregon.  The 6’8″, 280 lb. Armstead was originally committed to USC, but his older brother Armond, who was on USC’s roster, was upset about some issues with the program.  Arik decommitted and has gone on a months long journey looking for another school.  As the season and all-star games wore on, scouts’ feelings on Arik started to wane because he insisted on a desire to play defensive end.  At his size he looks like nothing other than an offensive tackle.

Fairless Hills (PA) Pennsbury offensive tackle J.J. Denman changed his commitment from Wisconsin to Rutgers.  Denman had previously been committed to Penn State.  He’s 6’7″, 305 lbs. and extremely indecisive, apparently, which makes him potentially dangerous if you ever run into him on the street.  My advice: Don’t run into him on the street.

Scottsdale (AZ) Saguaro running back/wide receiver D.J. Foster committed to Arizona State on Friday.  As a senior in 2011, he had over 3,000 yards rushing and 60 touchdowns, including 508 yards rushing and 10 touchdowns in one playoff game.  Saguaro is the alma mater of David Spade, who was born in Michigan.

Old Tappan (NJ) Old Tappan QB/ATH Devin Fuller committed to UCLA on Sunday.  The 6’0″, 185 lb. Fuller was being recruited by Michigan to play quarterback at the beginning of the cycle, but then the Wolverines started trying to reel him in as a defensive back.  Fuller, who wants to play quarterback in college, was considered to be Rutgers lean until Scarlet Knights head coach Greg Schiano jumped ship for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.  New Bruins head coach Jim Mora must have convinced Fuller he could be the next Michael Vick, despite the fact that Vick wasn’t a very good quarterback when he was with Mora’s Atlanta Falcons.

Puyallup (WA) Puyallup offensive guard Joshua Garnett committed to Stanford on Thursday.  Garnett was down to Stanford and Michigan, and lots of people thought Garnett would choose Michigan.  Unfortunately, his connections to Michigan – and especially Erik Magnuson – just weren’t quite strong enough.  Approximately 83% of voters on this here blog said Garnett would pick Michigan, so you guys are boogers.

Shaler (PA) Shaler Area tight end J.P. Holtz committed to Pitt.  He was once committed to Penn State, but . . . well . . . strange things happened there.  Holtz appeared on Michigan’s radar when Lyndhurst (OH) Brush tight end Pharaoh Brown decommitted from Michigan in favor of Oregon, but it was a fleeting romance.

Castle Rock (CO) Valor offensive guard/center Alex Kozan committed to Iowa, according to Sam Webb.  Kozan is a 6’4″, 295-pounder who could have filled the hole left by Caleb Stacey’s decommitment and played center.  Now Michigan is down to fifth year senior Rocko Khoury, redshirt freshman Jack Miller, and position changers to play center in the fall, with very little depth for 2013.

Cincinnati (OH) Moeller wide receiver Monty Madaris committed to Michigan State.  The 6’2″, 190 lb. wideout eliminated Michigan a while ago and was down to the Spartans and Cincinnati.  He had 56 receptions for 1,137 yards and 16 touchdowns as a senior.

West Roxbury (MA) Catholic Memorial cornerback Armani Reeves committed to Ohio State.  The 5’9″, 185 lb. defensive back followed his best friend, linebacker Camren Williams, in becoming a Buckeye.  The Williams family has essentially adopted Reeves, so it was difficult to see this going in any direction other than toward Columbus.

Van (TX) Van linebacker Dalton Santos changed his commitment from Tennessee to Texas.  Several months ago, I mistakenly typed “Texas” on Twitter instead of “Tennessee” and everyone was like “YOU MEAN TENNESSEE, YOU MORON!!!”  Well . . . who’s laughing now?  I was just predicting the future. Santos originally committed to Oklahoma State before flipping to Tennessee, so what I’m taking away from this is . . . he really likes the color orange.

Ramsey (NJ) Don Bosco Prep cornerback Yuri Wright committed to Colorado.  The Buffaloes seemed to be his third or fourth choice behind Michigan and Notre Dame, but his tweets about wanting to get laid got him expelled from his private school and dropped by some schools, including Michigan.

Recruiting Update: January 4, 2012

Louisville (KY) Trinity DE Jason Hatcher
(image via Voice-Tribune)

ADDED TO THE BOARDS (2012, 2013, 2014)
Miami (OH) Norland inside linebacker Keith Brown de-committed from Illinois.  He had previously been committed to Miami, flipped to Illinois before Ron Zook was fired, and now will announce his commitment during the U.S. Army All-American Bowl this weekend.  He is expected to choose between Illinois, Louisville, and Miami, so Michigan is still out of the running.

Louisville (KY) Trinity defensive end Jason Hatcher, a 2013 prospect, received an offer from the Wolverines last week.  He’s a 6’1″, 231 lb. athlete with offers from Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisville, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, and Tennessee.  247 Sports ranks him at #140 overall for 2013 and the #7 weakside end.  Hatcher had 40 tackles and 12 sacks as a junior.

Salt Lake City (UT) Highland defensive tackle Bryan Mone, a 2014 prospect, was offered by Michigan.  Mone is the first 2014 prospect to be offered by the Wolverines and is the teammate of incoming fullback Sione Houma.  The 6’3″, 255 lb. Mone also has offers from Utah and Utah State.  The 2014 Offer Board has been unveiled!

Louisville (KY) Trinity wide receiver James Quick, a 2013 prospect, has been offered by Michigan.  He’s the teammate of Hatcher, obviously.  Quick is a 6’1″, 180-pounder with a reported 4.41 forty time.  He has offers from Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisville, and others.  This past season he had 82 receptions, 1434 yards, and 21 touchdowns, which was good enough to earn him the #42 overall spot for 247 Sports’ 2013 rankings.  He’s also their #3 wide receiver and the top player in Kentucky.

OFF THE BOARD
Lyndhurst (OH) Brush tight end Pharaoh Brown committed to Oregon.  This was not a surprise, since he went out to Oregon while he was committed to Michigan . . . without telling Michigan’s coaches.  Michigan promptly dropped him from their recruiting board.  I was not impressed with Brown’s attitude at various points throughout the recruiting process, so perhaps this is for the best.

Erie (PA) McDowell running back Greg Garmon committed to Iowa during the Semper Fidelis All American Bowl.  Garmon is a 6’2″, 195 lb. runner with good speed and physicality who will likely present a problem for Michigan in the coming years.  Outside of starter Marcus Coker, there is a huge void at running back for the Hawkeyes (backup Mika’il McCall announced on Tuesday that he was leaving the program), so Garmon’s choice makes sense.  He will likely be able to play immediately as a freshman in 2012.

Columbus (IN) East quarterback Gunner Kiel committed to LSU.  Kiel is widely considered to be the #1 quarterback prospect in the nation.  There was a time back in the spring when people thought he might end up at Michigan, but that flirtation ended a long time ago.  At one point Kiel had committed to Indiana, but the fact that the Hoosiers went 1-11 might have had something to do with him changing his mind.

San Diego (CA) Westview tight end Taylor McNamara committed to Oklahoma.  This is clearly a better option than the school he was previously committed to, which was Arizona.  The new Arizona coach is Rich Rodriguez, obviously, and Rodriguez doesn’t get the ball to his tight ends very much.  Meanwhile, Oklahoma traditionally has a strong passing attack, and McNamara should fit in well there.

Olney (MD) Good Counsel defensive end Ryan Watson committed to Purdue.  The 6’3″, 270-pounder is the former teammate of Blake Countess and the current teammate of Wes Brown (2012), Stefon Diggs (2012), Kendall Fuller (2013), and Dorian O’Daniel (2013), all of whom have Michigan offers.  As one might expect from a kid with his size, the Boilermakers want him to play defensive tackle.

Additional Visitors for Ohio State Game

DeVeon Smith

Last week I posted the expected visitors for the Ohio State game.  In addition, the following recruits showed up in Ann Arbor on Saturday:

Nashville (TN) Montgomery Bell Academy OL Blake Bars: Bars will sign with Michigan in February.

Southfield (MI) Southfield WR Brandon Bean: Bean is a 6’2″, 200 lb. prospect for 2013.  He attends the same high school as class of 2012 tight end Ron Thompson, whom Michigan offered early in the recruiting cycle.

Owensboro (KY) Apollo OT Hunter Bivin: Bivin is a 6’7″, 288 lb. prospect for 2013.  Apollo is a rival of Madisonville (KY) North Hopkins, where 2012 commit Jeremy Clark played.  Bivin’s only current offer is from Kentucky.

Mason (MI) Mason FB/LB Blake Cook: Cook is a 6’3″, 226 lb. prospect for 2012.  He currently has zero FBS offers and could be a walk-on prospect for Michigan.

Warren (OH) Howland ATH Brendan Cope: Cope is a 6’4″, 185 lb. prospect for 2013.  He currently has zero FBS offers, but with that size and a reported 4.45 time in the 40, that will likely change soon.

Lansing (MI) Eastern OL Josh Crim: Crim is a 6’6″, 270 lb. prospect for 2013.  He currently has zero FBS offers.

Cincinnati (OH) Wyoming DT Terry Davis: Davis is a 6’4″, 270 lb. prospect who’s currently committed to North Carolina State.  He attends the alma mater of Michigan defensive end Jibreel Black.  Davis also has offers from Illinois, Indiana, Louisville, and South Florida, among others.

Lake Forest (IL) Lake Forest WR Bo Dever: Dever is a 6’2″, 195 lb. prospect who has already committed to walk on at Michigan in 2012.

Cincinnati (OH) Moeller OG Alex Gall: Gall is a 6’5″, 295 lb. prospect for 2013.  He currently has zero FBS offers.

Akron (OH) St. Vincent-St. Mary WR Jordan Hargrove: Hargrove is a 5’11”, 170 lb. prospect for 2013.

Traverse City (MI) West OG Connor Hayes: Hayes is a 6’3″, 260 lb. prospect for 2014.

Muskegon (MI) Muskegon RB Juwan Lewis: Lewis is a 5’11”, 200 lb. prospect with offers from Buffalo, Toledo, and Western Michigan.  He was hoping for a Michigan offer, but the commitment from Drake Johnson and the potential for Bri’onte Dunn to commit have presumably squashed most of that hope.

Canton (OH) Glenoak OG Steve Mathie: Mathie is a 6’5″, 270 lb. prospect for 2013.  He already holds an offer from UCLA.

Youngstown (OH) Cardinal Mooney SS Marcus McWilson: McWilson is a 6’0″, 195 lb. prospect for 2013.  He currently has zero FBS offers, but that will likely change in the coming months.  He attends the alma mater of former Michigan safety Ray Vinopal.

Saline (MI) Saline LS Taybor Pepper: Pepper is a 6’5″, 180 lb. prospect who one “expert” considers to be the #6 high school long snapper in the country.  Michigan’s starting long snapper is Tom Pomarico, who graduates after this season.  Pepper may walk on in Ann Arbor and battle with starting short snapper Jareth Glanda for snapping duties.

Kansas City (MO) Park Hill DT Ondre Pipkins: Pipkins will sign with Michigan in February.

Bloomfield Hills (MI) Brother Rice LB Jon Reschke: Reschke is a 6’2″, 210 lb. prospect for 2013.  He currently holds offers from Michigan State and Toledo; the Spartans are considered to be the leader, with Notre Dame somewhere close to the front, too.

Holland (MI) Holland LB Nathan Ricketts: Ricketts is a 6’3″, 215 lb. prospect with offers from Central Michigan, Toledo, and Western Michigan.

Warren (OH) Howland RB DeVeon Smith: Smith is a 5’11”, 215 lb. prospect for 2013.  He currently has zero FBS offers, but he’s the younger brother of former Wisconsin running back Lance Smith (who was booted from the Badgers a few seasons ago because of a domestic violence charge).

Holland (MI) Holland ATH Corey Willis: Willis is a 5’10”, 170 lb. prospect for 2013.  He could play wide receiver or cornerback in college, but he currently has zero FBS offers.

A Look at Potential Future Michigan Recruits

Chelsea running back Berkley Edwards breaks outside against Monroe

A post showed up on Tuesday from Jim Stefani’s blog.  Stefani is a recruiting “expert” with an encyclopedic knowledge of high school recruiting, and he unleashed his knowledge of the state of Michigan on his readers.

There are many potential 2013 and 2014 prospects with ties to Michigan, including:

  • Braylon Edwards’ little brother Berkley, a running back from Chelsea
  • Harlan Huckleby’s son Eddie, a running back/defensive back from Farmington Hills Harrison
  • Antonio Bass’ little brother Amani, a quarterback from Jackson Lumen Christi
  • Rocko Khoury’s cousin Jake Khoury, a lineman from Traverse City West
  • John Jaeckin’s son John, Jr., a lineman from Lakewood St. Edward (Ohio)
  • Craig Roh’s brother Jake, a tight end from Scottsdale Chaparral (Arizona)
  • Paul Heuerman’s (Michigan basketball player) son Mike, a tight end from Naples Barron Collier (Florida)
  • Greg Skrepenak’s son Christian, an offensive lineman from Wilkes-Barre GAR Memorial (Pennsylvania)
  • Alan Branch’s little brother Desmond, a defensive lineman from Rio Rancho Cleveland (New Mexico)
It will be interesting to see these kids grow and develop in the coming years, although Skrepenak is already supposedly 6’8″ and 350 lbs.  His dad was only 6’6″, 322 lbs.
Christian Skrepenak (#45), the son of former Michigan lineman Greg.  See
those other guys?  They’re jumping.
