2016 NFL Draft: 1st Round Thoughts

The first round of the NFL Draft was fantastic last night for lots of reasons. The one drawback was seeing five Ohio State Buckeyes get drafted, and I’m going to have a hard time rooting for new Detroit Lion Taylor Decker. I was hoping for Alabama center Ryan Kelly. Oh well.

All the news about Ole Miss offensive tackle was amazing:

  • His Instagram account was hacked and showed a video of him smoking a substance through a bong while wearing a gas mask
  • Messages popped up on his account showing a conversation in which it looks like he was accepting money from an athletic department official
  • He acknowledged the accuracy of these things during the post-draft press conference
  • When asked if he took money from a coach, he said yes

But no, Ole Miss isn’t guilty of anything:

Three Ole Miss players got drafted in the first round. The first was Tunsil, who was perhaps the best prospect in the draft and ended up going #13 to the Miami Dolphins. Next was wide receiver Laquon Treadwell, who seemed likely to end up at Michigan coming out of high school before the above picture was taken. And last was Robert Nkemdiche, who had some strange off-the-field issues during and after last season; it was reported last night that NFL teams might ask him to separate himself from some of his acquaintances, including his older brother Denzel.

In other news, Michigan had nobody drafted. Maybe we’ll see a Wolverine or two go off the board tonight when rounds 2 and 3 are broadcast.

Also, I got 6 picks exactly right in my mock draft (LINK), not to mention a couple other guys whom I had pegged to the right team but the teams traded up to get them (Leonard Floyd to Chicago, Germain Ifedi to Seattle). Not great, but it could have been worse.

Here are the results of the 1st round (LINK).

What did you think about the draft last night?

2016 NFL Draft Preview: Michigan Wolverines

Jake Rudock 886x

Jake Rudock

The 2016 NFL Draft kicks off on Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. I’m not the world’s biggest draft junkie (you can only have so many obsessions in your life), but I am always enthralled by the first round of the NFL Draft. Other than the Super Bowl, it’s my favorite single NFL day of the year . . . depending on whether the Lions are in the playoffs or not, which is usually not. Tomorrow night I’ll be headed to a friend’s house where a half dozen of us will eat pizza, drink cold beverages, and make fun of each other’s favorite teams.

Several Michigan Wolverines will be on the board, but none will be taken on Thursday, barring a huge surprise. With their Combine and pro day numbers in mind (LINK), here’s a look at Michigan’s representatives in the Draft and some slightly educated guesses about where they’ll go:

Graham Glasgow, C
Glasgow is 6’6″, 307 lbs. and did 23 reps on the bench at the Combine. He ran a 5.13 forty and a 4.63 shuttle time. He also performed well playing both guard and center at the Senior Bowl. He will almost certainly get drafted, but probably not as the top center. It will be interesting to see whether his multiple off-the-field issues with alcohol will cause him to slide.
Best guess: Rd. 3, #87 overall to the Cincinnati Bengals

Willie Henry, DT
Henry stands 6’2″, 303 lbs. and did 28 reps on the bench at the Combine. He ran the forty in 5.0 seconds and a 4.53 shuttle. He also showed a 30.5″ vertical and a 9’2″ broad jump. Henry has good quickness off the ball and can be a playmaker, but he’s a little bit inconsistent. He struggled to hold up at times on the interior because of leverage issues, so he’s more of a 3-tech or an undersized end in a 3-4.
Best guess: Rd. 4, #106 overall to the Chicago Bears

Hit the jump for more on the expectations for Michigan’s outgoing seniors.

Michigan’s 2016 Pro Day Results

Oddly, Michigan held its Pro Day yesterday and not much was said about it. The hypemaster himself, Jim Harbaugh, didn’t drum up a lot of a media attention for once, so very little news has trickled out so far. Maybe he didn’t want to try to overshadow the Michigan basketball game against Notre Dame.

Anyway, a recap from Gil Brandt can be found here (LINK) and I’ll update news as more things come. I do expect other news, including about Sione Houma, Desmond Morgan, Joe Bolden, James Ross III, and others.

Hit the jump for the compiled results.
