Scouting Report: Ron Johnson, Jr.

Name: Ron Johnson
Height: 6’4″
Weight: 240 lbs.
High school: Camden (NJ) Camden
Position: Defensive end
Class: 2016

Notes: Holds offers from Arizona State, Boston College, Kentucky, Miami, Michigan, Michigan State, Missouri, Nebraska, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Old Dominion, Ole Miss, Oregon, Penn State, Pitt, Rutgers, South Carolina, Syracuse, Temple, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wisconsin . . . ESPN 4-star, #11 defensive end, #73 overall . . . Rivals 4-star, #5 weakside end, #96 overall . . . Scout 3-star, #48 defensive end . . . 247 Sports 4-star, #14 weakside end, #220 overall

Strengths: Good frame to stay at defensive end . . . Plenty of room to add weight . . . Long arms . . . Uses hands well to shed blockers . . . Quick, compact swim move . . . Good awareness and nose for football . . . Enough speed and tenacity to chase down plays from backside . . . Violent hitter . . . Runs feet after contact . . . Plays with chip on his shoulder . . . Takes good angles . . . Good straight-line speed and agility . . . Fast enough to threaten the edge with speed rush

Weaknesses: Can play too high on interior . . . Needs to improve explosiveness of first step . . . Needs to diversify pass rush repertoire . . . Sometimes gets lazy with tackling technique

Projection: Defensive end. Depending on how his body develops, Johnson could play either the weakside end or strongside end position. He does not have the speed and suddenness to be a complete terror as a pass rusher, but he has enough speed to be a consistent threat and enough tenacity to finish plays with hustle. Johnson is a high-floor player who, at the very least, should be able to hold his own against the run and make some Brennen Beyer- or Craig Roh-like plays on the quarterback. There are times in his film where he crushes lead blockers, and he has a violent way about his play that makes me think he likes punishing anyone with an opposing jersey.

Reminds me of: Frank Clark. I mentioned Beyer and Roh up above as kind of Johnson’s floor, but when Clark was clicking, he was very tough to deal with. Johnson is probably a little taller and his game is more developed at this point, but both guys have good frames, a good wingspan, and a nasty attitude.

Likelihood of committing to Michigan: Johnson recently named a top fifteen that included Michigan, and the Wolverines have even been reported to be in his top two schools (along with South Carolina). Johnson visited Michigan this spring with teammate Brad Hawkins, who also holds a Michigan offer. The Wolverines have as good of a shot as anyone.

Recruiting Update: May 26, 2015

Plantation (FL) American Heritage defensive end Brian Burns (#99)

NOTE: I posted a short recruiting update on 2018 prospects yesterday (LINK).

ADDED TO THE BOARD: 2016
New Orleans (LA) Brother Martin tight end Peyton Aucoin was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’4″, 255 lb. prospect who has lots of a lower level offers, along with Arizona State, North Carolina State, and Texas. He’s a 247 Composite 3-star, the #44 tight end, and #1015 overall. Aucoin is not known for his pass catching skills, but he blocks very well and has the size to be an in-line tight end and essentially another lineman.

Plantation (FL) American Heritage defensive end Brian Burns was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’5″, 212 lb. prospect with offers from Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, LSU, Miami, and South Carolina, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 3-star, the #27 weakside end, and #438 overall. As a junior in 2014, he had 75 tackles, 17.5 tackles for loss, and 12 sacks. He claims a 4.76 forty and was invited to The Opening. Burns is a long, lean, quick-twitch guy who has the makings of an impressive pass rusher. You may want to watch his highlights for some pretty impressive basketball highlights that are interspersed throughout.

Abbotsford (BC) Abbotsford wide receiver Chase Claypool was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’5″, 205 lb. prospect with offers from Arizona, Mississippi State, Nebraska, Oregon, Utah, and Washington, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 3-star, the #168 wide receiver, and #1159 overall. The talent, coaching, and passion for football just isn’t the same in Canada as it is in the United States, so Canadian prospects are tough to judge based on their level of competition and their lack of precise coaching. However, Claypool has some good change-of-direction skills for being so tall, and he looks like a basketball player when going up for the ball. British Columbia – the southwestern province of Canada – borders the state of Washington, and Oregon appears to be the front-runner for Claypool’s services.

Hit the jump for several more 2016 offers, a few 2017 offers, some guys who committed elsewhere, and some random bits.

Trophy Club (TX) Byron Nelson offensive tackle Kellen Diesch was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’7″, 270 lb. prospect with offers from Arkansas, Baylor, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Texas A&M, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 3-star, the #49 offensive tackle, and #568 overall. Diesch is also a standout defensive end, but his body and skills make him an offensive line prospect. He needs to add strength, and he tends to stand up too high on defense, although he does a better job of staying low when blocking. He is likely to stay in Big 12 country for college.

Arlington (TX) Bowie offensive guard Tope Imade was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’4″, 327 lb. prospect with offers from Miami, Texas, and Texas Tech, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 3-star, the #44 offensive guard, and #927 overall. Imade moves his feet well and has a good body for college, but he does not have great hips and might get submarined by defensive linemen who are able to stay low and fire out. Texas came in with an offer shortly after Michigan did, and Imade is likely to end up as a Longhorn.

New Orleans (LA) St. Augustine tight end Jamal Pettigrew, an LSU commit, was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’6″, 229 lb. prospect who committed to the Tigers in January; he also has offers from Alabama, Florida, Miami, and Texas, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 4-star, the #6 tight end, and #170 overall. As a junior in 2014, he caught 17 passes for 345 yards and 3 touchdowns. Pettigrew has pretty good speed, nice hands, tracks the ball well in the air, and is a plus blocker, too. Michigan is unlikely to be able to peel Pettigrew away from LSU’s grips, but this offer may be partly about building relationships in fertile recruiting grounds. St. Augustine is the school that produced LSU running back Leonard Fournette in 2014, as well as Texas cornerback Jermaine Roberts, both of whom were offered by Michigan.

New Orleans (LA) Brother Martin tight end Irvin Smith was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’4″, 230 lb. prospect with offers from Alabama, Florida, Miami, and Texas, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 3-star, the #24 tight end, and #564 overall. A teammate of Aucoin (see above), Smith is the pass receiver of the two and shows some smooth route running and soft hands. He’s the son of former Notre Dame tight end Irvin Smith, who was a first round NFL Draft pick by the Saints in 1993, concluding his career in 1999 after subsequent stints with the 49ers and Browns.

Citra (FL) North Marion wide receiver Freddie Swain was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’0″, 172 lb. prospect with offers from Alabama, Clemson, Florida, Georgia, and Miami, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 4-star, the #44 wide receiver, and #246 overall. As a junior in 2014, he caught 52 passes for 841 yards and 6 touchdowns. He claims a 4.55 forty and was invited to The Opening. Florida appears to be the front-runner as of now.

ADDED TO THE BOARD: 2017
Seattle (WA) Cleveland offensive tackle Henry Bainivalu was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’4″, 270 lb. prospect with offers from Cal, Oregon State, Washington, and Washington State. He’s a 247 Sports 4-star, the #11 offensive tackle, and #77 overall. Bainivalu has good feet and shows pretty good technique, but he may not have the length to stay outside and could end up playing guard. The front-runner right now appears to be the in-state Huskies.

Bellflower (CA) St. John Bosco offensive tackle Wyatt Davis was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’5″, 290 lb. prospect with offers from Alabama, Arizona, Cal, Oklahoma, UCLA, and USC, among others. He’s a 247 Sports 4-star, the #6 offensive tackle, and #34 overall. Davis is a pretty well polished player at a powerhouse California school, one that produced quarterback Josh Rosen (UCLA) in the 2015 class and has several FBS prospects each year. Michigan is supposedly right in the top couple schools for Davis, who is fond of Tim Drevno’s work at San Francisco and with USC.

Fort Lauderdale (FL) St. Thomas Aquinas wide receiver Trevon Grimes was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’3″, 180 lb. prospect with offers from Auburn, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, LSU, and Notre Dame, among others. He’s a 247 Sports 5-star, the #1 wide receiver, and #7 overall. He claims a 4.48 forty. He is widely expected to commit to Ohio State, possibly in the very near future.

Monroeville (PA) Gateway offensive guard Robert Hainsey was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’4″, 263 lb. prospect with offers from Michigan State, North Carolina State, Penn State, and Pitt, among others. He’s a 247 Sports 4-star, the #18 offensive tackle, and #148 overall. Gateway has been a hotbed of talent outside of Pittsburgh, and Michigan has recruited several prospects from there, especially during the late Lloyd Carr era and Rich Rodriguez years. Hainsey is leaning toward Penn State.

Fort Lauderdale (FL) St. Thomas Aquinas defensive tackle Kedonis Haslem was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’3″, 290 lb. prospect whose lone other offer comes from South Carolina. Haslem is a bit of a lumberer at this point and does not have great football instincts, and I would not be surprised to see him become an offensive player. He is the son of Miami Heat forward Udonis Haslem, who played his college basketball at Florida.

Denton (TX) Guyer tight end Brian Polendey was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’4″, 235 lb. prospect whose only other offer comes from Houston. Polendey has mostly been under the radar, and no highlights of him exist right now, as far as I know. Michigan is in on him early. Polendey’s part-time quarterback in 2014 was Kevin Dillman, who had strong Michigan interest at one time but ended up signing with North Texas after decommitting from Nebraska. The other QB was 2017 passer Shawn Robinson, the top dual-threat quarterback in his class, who also holds a Michigan offer.

Graham (WA) Kapowsin offensive tackle Foster Sarell was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’6″, 310 lb. prospect with offers from Alabama, Stanford, UCLA, and Washington, among others. He’s a 247 Sports 5-star, the #3 offensive tackle, and #5 overall. He has already committed to play in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl. I worry about guys who are so big at a young age, because they tend to plateau from a growth standpoint, and hitting 300 lbs. as a freshman means an extra few years of carrying that much weight around on your knees and ankles. He is now 310 lbs., and while he moves pretty well, it’s interesting to see whether players with bodies like this continue to mature or not.

Florence (AL) Florence safety J’Marick Woods was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’4″, 196 lb. prospect whose first came from the Wolverines, followed closely by Kentucky. Woods claims a 4.67 forty. Woods is a long safety who could very well turn into an outside linebacker in college. His teammate is 2016 fullback/linebacker Erroll Thompson, whom Michigan is recruiting as a two-way player.

OFF THE BOARD
Houston (TX) Westside defensive tackle Jordan Elliott committed to Houston. Elliott has had a bit of an odd recruitment so far, as he was previously committed to Baylor. So far he has eschewed the traditional powers (including Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Texas, USC, and others) for two other in-state schools, neither of which has had sustained success. The U.S. Army All-American has over eight months until National Signing Day, and I would not be surprised to see him change his mind again.

Suwanee (GA) North Gwinnett wide receiver Josh Imatorbhebhe committed to USC. For Michigan followers, this is a plus because I certainly would not look forward to writing “Imatorbhebhe” for long, let alone pronouncing it. However, he’s the 247 Composite #33 wide receiver and #177 overall player, so he’s a good prospect.

Orchard Lake (MI) St. Mary’s offensive guard Cameron Kolwich committed to Northwestern. Kolwich had recently picked up offers from Arkansas and Vanderbilt, and his commitment to Northwestern surprised 247 Sports Crystal Ball predictors, who had him 100% choosing Michigan.

Woodberry Forest (VA) Woodberry Forest offensive tackle Clark Yarbrough committed to Stanford. At one time Michigan was considered to be the leader for Yarbrough, and indeed, Michigan still had 5% of his Crystal Ball picks at the time he pledged to Stanford. However, Jim Harbaugh’s staff backed off of Yarbrough a few months ago, supposedly because they’re not sure if his frame (6’6″, 270 lbs. right now) can handle the type of weight they want to put on their offensive tackles.

MISCELLANEOUS
Cranford (NJ) Cranford offensive tackle Will Fries is visiting Michigan today. He’s a 6’6″, 270 lb. prospect with offers from Clemson, Miami, Michigan, Penn State, Pitt, and Rutgers, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 3-star, the #37 offensive tackle, and #387 overall.

Euless (TX) Trinity defensive tackle Chris Daniels put Michigan in his top ten. Daniels grew up in Muskegon before moving to Texas, and he said that Michigan was his favorite school as a kid. He’s the #114 overall player in the country.

Camden (NJ) Camden defensive end Ron Johnson placed Michigan in his top fifteen. Top fifteens are stupid, and I don’t like mentioning top lists very often. However, Daniels has a clear connection to the state of Michigan, and Johnson visited Michigan this spring with several other Garden State prospects. The main reason I mention him, however, is that I typed up about 75% of his scouting report last week before I got sidetracked. The finalized version should be coming in the next day or two, and Michigan is reportedly in his top two.

Over on Recruiting Season, I posted some new developments:

Recruiting Update: May 18, 2015

Chris Singletary (image via MLive.com)

RECRUITING STAFF NEWS
Over the last couple weeks, news has come out about Michigan’s recruiting staff. Most significantly, director of player personnel Chris Singletary is out. The former Michigan linebacker reportedly created a bit of a rift in recruiting circles around the state of Michigan. The story goes that he only had strong relationships with a few schools – the ones that would have perennial FBS prospects – and largely ignored a lot of the other coaching staffs in the state, except when they would have a blue-chip prospect. Now that he’s gone, some of those traditionally talent-laden schools are miffed. There are rumors floating about that Singletary burned some bridges to Michigan on the way out, too. Contrary to that rumor, Scout’s Sam Webb says that Singletary is being considered for an administrative job within the athletic department, which would be an odd move for a guy who allegedly bad-mouthed the program toward the end. Webb is typically a trusted source, but he is also friendly with Singletary, so the truth might lie somewhere in the middle.

Meanwhile, former Paramus (NJ) Catholic head coach Chris Partridge, who was hired a few months ago, is now the lead man in the recruiting office. He and Matt Doherty are handling the majority of recruiting info, but Jim Harbaugh has also pulled out the ace he had up his sleeve: Erik Campbell. Campbell, who played and coached at Michigan, spent time with Iowa and the Montreal Alouettes in recent years. He was hired to work in the football program this offseason, and now it looks like he will have the task of maintaining and/or mending relationships in the state. Campbell, who grew up in Indiana, was an associate head coach under Lloyd Carr and has a very good reputation. I expect Campbell to return to coaching before too long (whether on Michigan’s staff or elsewhere), but in the meantime, I think it’s an excellent move by Harbaugh to put him on the recruiting trail.

Now hit the jump for some new 2016 and 2018 offers, plus some guys who committed elsewhere and some random bits.

ADDED TO THE BOARD: 2016
Philadelphia (PA) Imhotep offensive guard Johncarlo Valentin was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’5″, 346 lb. prospect with offers from Arizona State, Pitt, Purdue, Rutgers, and Virginia Techa, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 3-star, the #14 offensive guard, and #355 overall. He is a huge lineman with some bad weight on him, but he shows surprisingly nimble feet in the open field. He reminds me a little bit of former Michigan lineman Chris Bryant, although I think Valentin is probably more agile. Valentin is not without faults, as he tends to try to use his upper body more than his legs. He is a teammate of 2016 tight end Naseir Upshur, who also holds a Michigan offer.

Hudson (NC) South Caldwell offensive guard Landon Robertson was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’5″, 306 lb. prospect with offers from Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia Tech, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 4-star, the #22 offensive tackle, and #221 overall. Robertson has quite a nasty streak and clearly loves physically dominating people, but while 247 Sports lists him as a tackle, I don’t think he has the feet to stay on the edge in college.

ADDED TO THE BOARD: 2018
Manvel (TX) Manvel safety Jalen Preston was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’2″, 210 lb. prospect with offers from Baylor, LSU, and Wisconsin, among others. He’s currently unranked because he’s just a freshman in high school. The linked highlights are of him as an eighth grader, but he doesn’t look like a kid who’s going to be a safety for his entire career. He runs like a guy who will be a linebacker, H-back, etc. in college. Michigan has tried to work their way into Manvel recently with offers to 2015 cornerback Will Lockett (UCLA), 2016 offensive tackle Austin Myers (committed to TCU), and 2016 safety Deontay Anderson (uncommitted), but those efforts have largely been fruitless other than an official visit out of Lockett back in January.

OFF THE BOARD
Calhoun (GA) Calhoun offensive guard Jack DeFoor committed to Ole Miss. This was a bit of a surprise since he was expected to pick Clemson, but Michigan was never heavily involved. DeFoor is a 3-star and #868 overall to the 247 Composite.

Potomac (MD) Bullis quarterback Dwayne Haskins, Jr. committed to Maryland. This is a good pull for the Terps, because Alabama, Clemson, Florida State, Ohio State, and others were also recruiting Haskins, the #61 player in the country, according to the 247 Composite. I had Haskins #4 on my wish list of quarterbacks (LINK).

Traverse City (MI) West offensive guard Thiyo Lukusa committed to Michigan State. Lukusa was pretty highly ranked early on, though I thought he was overrated. At one time he was close to committing to Brady Hoke’s Wolverines, but Hoke told him to wait and explore the process. Jim Harbaugh’s staff was not recruiting Lukusa very heavily.

Detroit (MI) Cass Tech safety Demetric Vance committed to Michigan State. I had Vance rated as the #9 player in the state of Michigan back in February (LINK). He could also play wide receiver.

MISCELLANEOUS
Hyattsville (MD) DeMatha offensive guard Terrance Davis put Michigan in his top ten. Michigan is also recruiting his teammate, 2017 running back Anthony McFarland, Jr., the best running back I’ve seen in his class so far.

Darien (IL) Hinsdale South defensive end Josh King is announcing his decision on June 6, and he has reportedly eliminated Michigan. Michigan State appears to be the front-runner. Fort Wayne (IN) Wayne defensive end Auston Robertson is announcing on June 7 and might also end up in East Lansing.

Concord (CA) De La Salle center Boss Tagaloa put Michigan in his top ten. The Wolverines are also recruiting his teammate, tight end Devin Asiasi.

2016 Recruiting Update: May 11, 2015

Fort Lauderdale (FL) St. Thomas Aquinas wide receiver Michael Irvin, Jr. (image via MaxPreps)

ADDED TO THE BOARD: 2016
Harbor City (CA) Narbonne wide receiver Devaughn Cooper was offered by Michigan. He’s a 5’10”, 171 lb. prospect with offers from Arizona and Washington, among others. As a junior in 2014, he caught 34 passes for 587 yards and 8 touchdowns. He claims a 4.61 forty. Cooper doesn’t have amazing physical skills, but he’s a nifty runner after the catch and isn’t afraid to catch the ball in traffic. He is a teammate of offensive tackle Alex Akingbulu, who also holds an offer from Michigan.

Tampa (FL) Catholic wide receiver Nate Craig-Myers decommitted from Auburn. He’s a 6’2″, 205 lb. prospect who’s a 247 Composite 5-star, the #1 wide receiver, and #23 overall. He never really showed interest in his Michigan offer, and Ohio State has a slim chance, but it looks like Florida State will be the beneficiary of his parting ways with Auburn.

Winchester (IN) Community safety Kiante Enis was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’1″, 180 lb. prospect with offers from Cincinnati, Indiana, and Louisville, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 3-star, the #61 running back, and #792 overall. As a junior in 2014, he ran the ball 299 times for 3,189 yards and 49 touchdowns. He claims a 4.35 forty. Enis has good speed, although film should be taken with a grain of salt when he’s running past small-town Indiana kids for a high school that has roughly 500 kids. He’s the nephew of former Penn State running back Curtis Enis, who went on to be a first round pick of the Chicago Bears. Michigan appears to be looking at Enis as a safety, although he has some position flexibility to play running back or receiver at the next level.

Hit the jump for several more new offers, a few guys who committed elsewhere, and then some random bits.

Fort Lauderdale (FL) St. Thomas Aquinas wide receiver Michael Irvin, Jr. was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’3″, 212 lb. prospect with offers from Georgia and Miami. He’s a 247 Composite 3-star, the #94 wide receiver, and #619 overall. Much like his father – former University of Miami and Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Michael Irvin – the younger Irvin is not known for his speed. Irvin, Jr. spent his junior season at Plano (TX) Prestonwood Christian, but he will be playing for St. Thomas Aquinas this fall, a Florida powerhouse. Michigan has unsuccessfully recruited several players from there before, although transfer quarterbacks Jake Rudock and John O’Korn are both alums. Regardless, Irvin is expected to follow in his footsteps and become a Hurricane.

Roswell (GA) Roswell linebacker Tre Lamar was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’4″, 240 lb. prospect with offers from Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, LSU, and Notre Dame, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 4-star, the #5 inside linebacker, and #148 overall. As a junior in 2014, he made 131 tackles, 13 tackles for loss, 4 sacks, and 7 pass breakups. Lamar is a large kid with a thick lower body, and he will probably outgrow the position and become a defensive end at some point. His teammate, 2017 cornerback LeAnthony Williams, also picked up an offer from Michigan. Lamar is expected to end up at Clemson.

Brentwood (TN) Brentwood Academy offensive tackle Bryce Mathews was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’5″, 275 lb. prospect with offers from Alabama, Ohio State, Ole Miss, Tennessee, and Texas A&M, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 4-star, the #23 offensive tackle, and #227 overall. Mathews is the son of former Texas A&M and NFL tackle Jason Mathews.

Loganville (GA) Grayson defensive end Mykelle McDaniel was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’4″, 255 lb. prospect with offers from Alabama, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Notre Dame, and Stanford, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 3-star, the #25 strongside end, and #479 overall. McDaniel is a big body with a pretty good motor, although he does not have outstanding athleticism. His teammate, 2019 running back/linebacker Owen Pappoe, was also offered by the Wolverines.

Greensboro (NC) Page wide receiver Diondre Overton was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’4″, 193 lb. prospect with offers from Clemson, North Carolina, North Carolina State, and Tennessee, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 4-star, the #29 wide receiver, and #160 overall. Despite being a tall guy, Overton has very good short-area quickness and run-after-the-catch abilities. His leader appears to be Clemson, which is a good destination for receivers these days.

Jacksonville (NC) Southwest defensive end Jimmie Taylor was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’3″, 220 lb. prospect with offers from Florida, North Carolina, North Carolina State, and Tennessee, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 3-star, the #48 weakside end, and #760 overall. He looks like a kid who might outgrow the weakside end position into a strongside guy since he is solidly built, and he does not have a great speed rush.

Downey (CA) Downey athlete Daevon Vigilant was offered by Michigan. He’s a 5’7″, 180 lb. prospect with offers from Colorado, San Diego State, Utah, and Washington State, among others. He is currently unranked by the recruiting services. As a junior in 2014, he had almost 2,000 rushing yards and 300 receiving yards. It’s unclear which position Michigan wants him to play since he is rather small for a running back, but he could be a receiver, corner, or returner. One thing on Michigan’s end is clear – the Wolverines need more guys who can make plays with the ball in their hands. Teammate Darrian Franklin is a 2016 prospect who also holds a Michigan offer and likes the Wolverines.

OFF THE BOARD
Phenix City (AL) Central cornerback John Broussard committed to Auburn. He was expected to stay down south, and did not show much interest in his Michigan offer. He’s the #98 overall player in the country according to 247 Composite rankings.

Rancho Cucamonga (CA) Los Osos offensive tackle Cohl Cabral committed to Arizona State. This is a bit of a steal for the Sun Devils, since Cabral was expected to take USC up on their offer.

Plymouth (MI) Plymouth offensive tackle Michael Jordan committed to Ohio State. This was a bit of a surprise because Jordan was reportedly hoping to take his time with his recruitment. It was not so much of a surprise that he committed to Ohio State. Not only does he want to pursue a program that some other schools don’t offer, but despite growing up a Michigan fan, he always had an eye on Ohio State and was not as enthused about his Michigan offer as some in-state guys are. It’s a blow to Michigan, because he’s the #156 player overall and I had him as the #4 player in the state of Michigan (LINK).

MISCELLANEOUS
Norfolk (VA) Lake Taylor cornerback Wayne Davis named a top five that includes Michigan. He’s a 247 Composite 3-star, the #30 cornerback, and #330 overall. However, he said Ohio State and Virginia Tech are tied for the lead, and he plans to make a visit this summer, so Michigan needs to get him on campus if they want a shot.

Evanston (IL) Evanston defensive tackle Naquan Jones also named a top five that includes Michigan. He’s a 247 Composite 3-star, the #28 defensive tackle, and #323 overall. The other teams on that list are Michigan State, Ohio State, Penn State, and South Carolina.

Darien (IL) Hinsdale South defensive end Josh King named a final five that includes Michigan. The big fish on this list of kids who named top lists, King is a 247 Composite 4-star, the #6 strongside end, and #73 overall. The Wolverines are competing against Michigan State, Notre Dame, Penn State, and USC.

I wrote up a scouting report on Paramus (NJ) Catholic defensive tackle Rashan Gary (LINK).

Here are a couple visitors from this past week (LINK).

(There seems to be a glitch with adding images in Blogger right now, so you don’t get to see a picture of Cole Van Lanen. I apologize from the bottom of my heart.)

Cole Van Lanen – OT – Green Bay (WI) Bay Port: The 6’5″, 275 lb. prospect has offers from Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Nebraska, and Wisconsin, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 4-star, the #27 offensive tackle, and #254 overall. All four Crystal Ball predictions have him going to Wisconsin, but he’s never been to sunny Ann Arbor before, so things can change in a hurry.

Note:
Auston Robertson – DE – Fort Wayne (IN) Wayne: Robertson is a 6’5″, 230 lb. prospect with offers from Alabama, Indiana, Michigan, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Ohio State, and Penn State, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 4-star, the #7 weakside end, and #109 overall. It was uncertain at the time, but he ended up visiting Michigan last Monday with fellow Indiana prospect Austin Mack. Following the visit, Robertson removed Ohio State from his top three and then included Michigan along with Michigan State and Notre Dame.
