ADDED TO THE BOARD: 2018

Valdosta (GA) Lowndes running back Michael Barrett was offered by Michigan. At 5’11” and 208 lbs., Barrett is a 3-star, the #20 dual-threat quarterback, and #589 overall. LSU, Maryland, North Carolina State, South Carolina, Tennessee, and West Virginia have also offered him. Barrett plays quarterback in high school, but Michigan is recruiting him as a running back or athlete. He may not have ideal size or throwing ability for a quarterback in Michigan’s system, but he did completed 132/213 passes for 2,753 yards, 27 touchdowns, and 6 interceptions as a junior in 2016; he also ran 168 times for 1,283 yards and 21 touchdowns.

Scouting Report: 2018 Quarterbacks

Dorian Thompson-Robinson (image via USA Today)

Since quarterback is such an important position in the game of football, I like to take a hard look at whom Michigan is recruiting in each class. I actually started this post a couple weeks ago, but with all the film watching and such, it took me a while to complete it. When I evaluate quarterbacks for this piece, I think about how well they would fit in the offense that I expect Michigan to run. With that being said, there’s some uncertainty going forward with talk that Jim Harbaugh wants more athletic quarterbacks and an offense that employs more wide receivers than we have seen in the past. Harbaugh did have success with a more spread-oriented offense as the San Francisco 49ers head coach, so I tried to keep that in mind when putting together this list.

Below is an in-depth look at the eleven quarterbacks Michigan has offered in the 2018 class, in order of my preferenc:

1. Trevor Lawrence – QB – Cartersville (GA) Cartersville: Lawrence is a 6’6″, 196 lb. prospect who committed to Clemson in December of 2016. He’s also a U.S. Army All-American and the #1 overall player in the country. Lawrence is probably the most “college ready” quarterback on this list. A pro-style guy, he has the size, footwork, arm strength, and accuracy to be deserving of his ranking. The thing that probably sets him apart is his intelligence and pre-snap reads. Lawrence does a great job of identifying coverages and getting rid of the ball quickly when he has an opportunity. In that sense I think he has a little bit of Peyton Manning in him; he’s a very cerebral quarterback. Lawrence isn’t a great athlete and I’m sure the Clemson offense will look different with Lawrence than it did with Deshaun Watson, but he still should be able to command that offense well.

Hit the jump for the rest of the list.

Kamryn Babb – WR – St. Louis (MO) Christian Brothers: Babb is a 6’1″, 189 lb. prospect with offers from Alabama, Auburn, LSU, Notre Dame, and Ohio State, among others. He’s a 4-star, the #9 wide receiver, and #47 overall. He’ll be visiting Ann Arbor on Saturday, April 1.

Dallas Gant – LB – Toledo (OH) St. John’s: Gant is a 6’3″, 225 lb. prospect with offers from Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oklahoma, and Penn State, among others. He’s a 4-star, the #5 outside linebacker, and #117 overall.

Chris Smith – CB – Atlanta (GA) Hapeville: Smith is a 5’10”, 170 lb. prospect with offers from Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, and Oregon, among others. He’s a 3-star, the #36 cornerback, and #434 overall.  He plans to be in town on Wednesday, March 29.

3-27-17 Recruiting Update: Flippin’ Minnesota

Jalen Mayfield (image via MLive)

In case you missed it, there was some site news posted yesterday about a new contributor and a new way to get an avatar (LINK).

ADDED TO THE BOARD: 2018

Grand Rapids (MI) Catholic Central offensive guard Jalen Mayfield, a Minnesota commit, was offered by Michigan. Mayfield is a 6’5″, 255 lb. guard/tackle prospect who chose the Gophers on February 18, but he also has offers from Arizona, Iowa, and Michigan State, among others. He’s a 3-star, the #57 offensive tackle, and #797 overall. As of Sunday afternoon, Michigan owns 83% of the Crystal Ball picks on 247 Sports, including that of the trustworthy Steve Lorenz. UPDATE: I already had this post written, but Mayfield decommitted from Minnesota on Sunday evening, and I took that as a ripe opportunity to also put in a Crystal Ball for Michigan. He’s now at 100% for the Wolverines.

St. Louis (MO) Lutheran North defensive end Ronnie Perkins was offered by Michigan. Perkins is a 6’4″, 250 lb. strongside end prospect who’s a 4-star, the #12 weakside end, and #254 overall. He has offers from Georgia, Iowa, LSU, Missouri, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Texas, and UCLA, among others. Perkins is a guy who might bulk up and play 3-tech tackle at the next level, but I don’t think he’ll be a weakside end like his rankings indicate.

Hit the jump for another offer, a commitment elsewhere, and some random bits.

Verdis Brown – OG – Bradenton (FL) IMG Academy: Brown is a 6’3″, 294 lb. prospect with offers from Florida State, LSU, Michigan, and Oklahoma, among others. He’s a 4-star, the #7 offensive guard, and #147 overall.

Sammy Faustin – S – Naples (FL) Naples: Faustin is a 6’2″, 170 lb. prospect with offers from Arizona, Maryland, and Michigan, among others. He’s currently unranked by the 247 Composite rankings. Right now all three Crystal Ball predictions are in favor of Michigan.

Tyler Friday – DT – Ramsey (NJ) Don Bosco Prep: Friday is a 6’3″, 260 lb. prospect with offers from Alabama, Michigan, Ohio State, and Penn State, among others. He’s a 4-star, the #2 defensive tackle, and #39 overall. Michigan has landed the top player in the state of New Jersey three out of the last four years (Drew Singleton in 2017, Rashan Gary in 2016, and Jabrill Peppers in 2014), and they’re hoping to do so again. Right now Michigan has 80% of the Crystal Ball picks.

Ryan Hayes – OT – Traverse City (MI) West: Hayes is a 6’7″, 252 lb. prospect with offers from Michigan, Michigan State, and Notre Dame, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 4-star, the #12 OT, and #153 overall. Right now Notre Dame has the Crystal Ball lead with 75%.

Hit the jump for a couple more visitors.
