Ahmir Mitchell, Wolverine

Egg Harbor City (NJ) Cedar Creek wide receiver Ahmir Mitchell

Egg Harbor City (NJ) Cedar Creek wide receiver Ahmir Mitchell committed to Michigan on Thursday afternoon. He chose the Wolverines over offers from Florida State, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Penn State, and Rutgers, among others.

Mitchell is 6’3″, 206 lbs. He claims a 4.67 forty. As a junior in 2014, he caught 47 passes for 881 yards and 12 touchdowns. He added almost 600 more yards and 10 touchdowns carrying the ball, on defense, and on special teams.

With the exception of Gary, the players below will be in town Wednesday through Friday.

2016
Rashan Gary – DT – Paramus (NJ) Catholic: I wrote a scouting report on Gary back in May (LINK). His Crystal Ball has 44% of votes in favor of Alabama and 38% for Michigan.

Brad Hawkins – WR – Camden (NJ) Camden: Hawkins is a 6’1″, 202 lb. prospect with offers from Auburn, Florida, Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Rutgers, and South Carolina, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 4-star, the #38 wide receiver, #203 overall, and #7 in the Garden State. As a junior in 2014, he caught 51 passes for 748 yards and 11 touchdowns while also rushing for 255 yards and 2 scores; on defense, he made 40 tackles and 3 picks, all 3 of which he returned for touchdowns. Michigan and South Carolina seem to be the two front-runners. UPDATE: Hawkins rescheduled his visit for July 18th.

Hit the jump for the rest of the visitors.

Ron Johnson, Jr. – DE – Camden (NJ) Camden: I did a scouting report on Johnson in late May (LINK). Much like teammate Hawkins, the choice seems to be between Michigan and South Carolina.

Ahmir Mitchell – WR – Egg Harbor City (NJ) Cedar Creek: Mitchell is a 6’3″, 206 lb. prospect with offers from Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, and Rutgers, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 4-star, the #6 athlete, #77 overall, and #3 in his state. As a junior in 2014, he caught 47 passes for 881 yards and 12 touchdowns. I have heard some talk that some teams see Mitchell as a tight end eventually, but I think he looks like a guy who can remain at wide receiver. The Brady Hoke staff’s recruitment of Mitchell tailed off since they were basically the only team recruiting him as a safety, but things have picked up now and 77% of the 247 Sports Crystal Balls are in favor of Michigan.

Naseir Upshur – TE – Philadelphia (PA) Imhotep: I also did a scouting report on Upshur (LINK). Miami leads with 50% of the Crystal Balls, but Michigan is second with 29%. The Wolverines have also offered his teammate, 2016 offensive guard Johncarlo Valentin.

2017
Cesar Ruiz – C – Camden (NJ) Camden: Ruiz is a 6’4″, 290 lb. prospect with offers from Alabama, Auburn, Miami, North Carolina, Penn State, and Rutgers, among others. He’s a 247 Sports 4-star, the #1 center, and #257 overall for his class. There’s a good chance that Ruiz will be offered by Michigan on the visit, and if either or both of his teammates commit, that would be a strong pull to Ann Arbor for Ruiz.

Detroit (MI) King wide receiver Donnie Corley

Johnathan Berghorst – DE – Zeeland (MI) East: Berghorst, a 2017 prospect, is a 6’3″, 245 lb. end with no offers at this time. He has visited Michigan numerous times, and while it’s rare that guys hang around Michigan a ton and don’t eventually get some kind of chance, nothing really stands out about Berghorst on film. He does still have two years of high school ball left to play, though.

Jalen Cochran – DE – Canton (MI) Canton: Cochran is a 6’4″, 225 lb. prospect with offers from Iowa and a few MAC schools. He’s a 247 Sports 3-star. Cochran is largely under the radar so far, but I believe he’s perhaps a pretty big sleeper and could earn some big-time offers by the time everything wraps up.

Donnie Corley – WR – Detroit (MI) King: Corley is a 6’2″, 180 lb. prospect with offers from LSU, Michigan, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Ohio State, and Ole miss, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 4-star, the #20 wide receiver, and #109 overall. Michigan was outside of his released top five because he had not built much of a relationship with the new coaching staff, but Harbaugh’s crew is working their way back up the ladder. Corley is visiting Tuesday, March 17.

Brad Hawkins – WR – Camden (MI) Camden: Hawkins is a 6’2″, 205 lb. prospect with offers from Florida, Michigan, Notre Dame, Pitt, Rutgers, and South Carolina, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 4-star, the #33 wide receiver, and #161 overall. Currently he appears to be favoring the Gamecocks, but he does not look to be in a hurry to make a decision, so Michigan still has a chance to work their way to the top.

Hit the jump for several more visitors.

Joshua Jackson – QB – Saline (MI) Saline: Jackson is a 6’2″, 200 lb. prospect with offers from Northwestern, Utah, and some assorted lower-level schools. He’s a 247 Composite 3-star, the #20 dual-threat quarterback, and #684 overall. Jackson is the son of former Michigan running backs coach Fred Jackson and the brother of former Wolverines wide receiver Jeremy Jackson, but the younger Jackson does not hold a Michigan offer at this time.

Ron Johnson, Jr. – DE – Camden (NJ) Camden: Johnson is a 6’4″, 240 lb. prospect with offers from Alabama, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Penn State, and Rutgers, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 4-star, the #17 weakside end, and #270 overall. As a junior in 2014, he had 84 tackles and 10 sacks. Johnson, who is teammates with Hawkins, is probably in line for an offer once he gets to campus (EDIT: Johnson was offered by Michigan on Thursday); he appears to have a strong motor and some good football intuition, along with some pretty good athleticism.

Michael Jordan – OT – Plymouth (MI) Plymouth: Jordan is a 6’6″, 275 lb. prospect with offers from Michigan, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Ohio State, and Penn State, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 4-star, the #18 offensive tackle, and #178 overall. He’s joining Corley on a visit to practice Tuesday, March 17.

Ahmir Mitchell – WR – Egg Harbor City (NJ) Timber Creek: Mitchell is a 6’3″, 205 lb. prospect with offers from Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, and Rutgers, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 4-star, the #6 athlete, and #88 overall. Mitchell, who was being recruited as a safety by Michigan’s previous staff, is now being looked at as a receiver. He recently placed Michigan in his top six schools. Despite attending a different school, he will be headed to Ann Arbor with Hawkins and Johnson.

Michael Onwenu – OG – Detroit (MI) Cass Tech: Onwenu is a 6’2″, 330 lb. prospect with offers from Alabama, Michigan, and Ohio State, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 4-star, the #7 offensive guard, and #212 overall. Michigan had dropped off Onwenu’s radar for a while, but recently the Wolverines have been climbing back up. Onwenu was favoring Ohio State at one time, but their treatment of former teammate Michael Weber may have turned him off the Buckeyes a little bit. Onwenu plays defensive tackle, too, but Michigan wants him as an interior offensive lineman.

Jake Rudock – QB – Iowa: Rudock is a 6’3″, 208 lb. quarterback who has been the starter at Iowa the past two years. He will be a fifth year senior in 2015 and plans to transfer. His first choice appears to be Michigan. As a redshirt junior in 2014, he completed 61.7% of his passes for 2,436 yards, 16 touchdowns, and 5 interceptions. Michigan was reportedly not very interested when Rudock first reached out, but their interest seems to have been piqued after watching a handful of spring practices.

Jack Wohlabaugh – C – Stow (OH) Walsh Jesuit: Wohlabaugh is a 6’3″, 280 lb. prospect with offers from Cincinnati, Kentucky, Minnesota, and Purdue, among others (UPDATE: He picked up a Michigan offer on his visit). He’s a 247 Composite 4-star, the #15 offensive guard, and #334 overall. He is also the son of Dave Wohlabaugh, who played center for Syracuse before moving on to the NFL to play for the Patriots, Browns, and Rams.

Recruiting Update: March 9, 2015

Concord (CA) De La Salle center/defensive tackle
Boss Tagaloa (image via Maxpreps.com)

One note before we get started is that Jim Harbaugh is littering the country with offers in the 2016 cycle. It’s unclear if/when the offers will slow down, but so far there are over 160 offers out for this cycle. By comparison, even after he tried to salvage the 2015 class, the Wolverines only offered 149 prospects. In fact, the last time Michigan offered this many prospects was during the 2012 cycle (LINK), when Brady Hoke offered 193 players. It would be surprising if Harbaugh did not obliterate that mark, considering the fact that we’re still about 11 months away from National Signing Day. One reason may be that Michigan is recruiting loads of players from California, Florida, and Texas. As we saw in the Rich Rodriguez days, that strategy can sometimes pay off but without the geographical connections, the hit rate is going to be much, much lower.

ADDED TO THE BOARD: 2016
Mineola (TX) Mineola center Austin Anderson was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’4″, 285 lb. prospect with offers from Illinois, Kansas State, and TCU, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 3-star, the #67 offensive tackle, and #820 overall. Anderson is a punishing blocker with a good motor who does not have great length or athleticism, so despite being ranked as an offensive tackle, he is probably going to become an interior lineman at the next level. His father played for Southern Mississippi.

Mineola (TX) Mineola offensive guard Riley Anderson was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’5″, 285 lb. prospect with offers from Arizona State, Illinois, Kansas State, and TCU, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 3-star, the #69 offensive tackle, and #849 overall. You may have guessed by now that Austin and Riley are twins, and their rankings are pretty darn close, too. However, Riley has a little more length than Austin, and if he can’t stay on the edge, Riley might be able to play guard.

Lawrence (KS) Lawrence defensive end Amani “Moose” Bledsoe was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’5″, 270 lb. prospect with offers from Florida State, Kansas, Kansas State, Notre Dame, Ohio State, and Oklahoma, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 4-star, the #15 strongside end, and #226 overall. Bledsoe plays pretty high and looks pretty awkward when making tackles, so he looks raw but obviously has some size and athleticism.

Hit the jump for numerous other 2016 offers, a commitment elsewhere, and some random tidbits.

Trophy Club (TX) Byron Nelson defensive end Brandon Bowen was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’4″, 220 lb. prospect with offers from Baylor, Oklahoma, TCU, and Texas, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 4-star, the #18 weakside end, and #272 overall. He claims a 4.58 forty. Bowen also plays receiver for his high school team, although he looks much better on the defensive side of the ball. However, he also looks pretty raw but shows some good athleticism.

Houston (TX) Stratford running back Rakeem Boyd was offered by Michigan. He’s a 5’11”, 200 lb. prospect with offers from Houston, Missour, and West Virginia, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 3-star, the #24 running back, and #366 overall. As a junior in 2014, he ran 194 times for 1,996 yards and 24 touchdowns. Boyd is a bit of a power runner who shows excellent vision but just average speed. The school he attends is the alma mater of Andrew Luck, so Jim Harbaugh’s staff has previously developed relationship with the coaches there.

Fort Lauderdale (FL) American Heritage tight end Nick Eubanks was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’6″, 205 lb. prospect with offers from Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, LSU, Miami, Oregon, South Carolina, and USC, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 3-star, the #13 tight end, and #362 overall. As a junior in 2014, he caught 26 passes for 408 yards and 4 touchdowns. He plays wide receiver for his high school team and is very thin at this point, so the transition to tight end could be a process.

Salt Lake City (UT) Brighton wide receiver Simi Fehoko was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’3″, 195 lb. prospect with offers from Clemson, Stanford, Utah, and Washington, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 4-star, the #43 wide receiver, and #239 overall. Fehoko’s film shows a lot of blown coverages allowing him to score some long touchdowns, but he does show nice deep speed and reminds me of Drake Harris a little bit in the way he moves. Michigan has brought in fullback Sione Houma and defensive tackle Bryan Mone in recent years, both of whom went to Highland in Salt Lake City; but Michigan has also recruited Brighton, which produced 2015 linebacker Osa Masina (USC) and 2014 offensive tackle Jackson Barton (Utah).

Niceville (FL) Niceville safety Romeo Finley was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’1″, 183 lb. prospect with offers from Clemson, Florida, Miami, and South Carolina, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 4-star, the #10 safety, and #250 overall. He claims a 4.62 forty. As a junior in 2014, he made 50 tackles, 1 sack, 1 interception, and 10 pass breakups. Finley is a big-hitting strong safety type. He is also a teammate of wide receiver Elijah Stove, whom Michigan has also offered.

Fayetteville (NC) Sanford cornerback Mark Gilbert was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’2″, 170 lb. prospect with offers from Duke, North Carolina State, Pitt, and West Virginia, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 3-star, the #45 cornerback, and #514 overall. As a junior in 2014, he made 34 tackles, 3 interceptions, and 8 pass breakups. Gilbert is a long, lanky corner who looks like he might fit best as a zone coverage guy. I think he might struggle in man coverage and does not have great speed or fluidity.

Torrance (NC) North linebacker Mique Juarez, a USC commit, was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’2″, 210 lb. prospect who also holds offers from BYU, Cal, and Notre Dame, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 4-star, the #12 outside linebacker, and #132 overall. He claims a 4.67 forty. Juarez is an athletic, aggressive, hard-hitting kid who also plays quarterback, but he will almost certainly play defense at the next level. He looks to me like a weakside outside linebacker who can play coverage, hold the edge, and support the run.

Wichita (KS) East defensive end Xavier Kelly, a Kansas State commit, was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’5″, 225 lb. prospect with offers from Arkansas, Nebraska, and Texas Tech. He’s a 247 Composite 3-star, the #28 weakside end, and #460 overall. He claims a 4.7 forty. Kelly shows some good aggression and athleticism. There have been indications that he will not end up signing with Kansas State, although Michigan is not necessarily a front-runner to flip him.

Ellenwood (GA) Cedar Grove linebacker Elysee Mbem-Bosse was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’3″, 232 lb. prospect with offers from Duke, Iowa, North Carolina State, Ole Miss, and Tennessee, among others. He is currently unranked. Mbem-Bosse looks like a 3-4 inside linebacker. Mbem-Bosse said upon his offer that he would like to visit Michigan this offseason.

La Puente (CA) Bishop Amat cornerback Trevon Sidney was offered by Michigan. He’s a 5’11”, 160 lb. prospect with offers from Arizona, Miami, UCLA, and USC, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 4-star, the #10 wide receiver, and #74 overall. Sidney could probably play wide receiver or corner at the next level, but he probably looks like a more natural corner. Regardless, he’s a guy who might be able to contribute on both sides, as well as at kick returner, during his college career.

Concord (CA) De La Salle center Boss Tagaloa was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’3″, 295 lb. prospect with offers from Alabama, Missouri, Ole Miss, Stanford, and UCLA, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 4-star, the #11 defensive tackle, and #64 overall. Tagaloa is rather compact, but he has good foot quickness and is very powerful. Some schools are recruiting him as a defensive tackle, but Michigan has pitched to him the chance to play center with a little defensive tackle on the side. That is something I don’t know that I’ve seen at the college level in modern football. Tagaloa is a teammate of tight end Devin Asiasi, whom Michigan has also offered.

Portland (OR) Central Catholic linebacker LaMar Winston was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’4″, 200 lb. prospect with offers from Arizona State, Cal, Oregon, and Washington, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 3-star, the #27 outside linebacker, and #352 overall. Winston also plays wide receiver and could potentially be a tight end at the next level, but he looks more comfortable on defense. He’s a highly athletic player who could be a dynamic 3-4 outside linebacker.

OFF THE BOARD
Washington (DC) Gonzaga defensive end Terrell Hall committed to Ohio State.

MISCELLANEOUS
Kentwood (LA) Kentwood cornerback Shyheim Carter, an Alabama commit, received an offer from Michigan a couple weeks ago and said he intends to take an official visit to Michigan this coming fall.

Egg Harbor City (NJ) Cedar Creek wide receiver Ahmir Mitchell announced that Michigan is in his top six schools. Normally I don’t talk about top lists because they’re generally not newsworthy to me; however, Mitchell also said that the new staff is recruiting him for wideout, whereas Brady Hoke wanted Mitchell to play safety. Mitchell is a 247 Composite 4-star, the #5 athlete, and #89 overall for 2016.

Over on Recruiting Season, I added/updated several profiles:

  • Novi (MI) Catholic Central offensive tackle Tom Kowalkoski committed to Western Michigan
  • Detroit (MI) East English Village defensive end Cedrick Lattimore
  • Farmington (MI) Farmington linebacker David Reese committed to Louisville

Recruiting Update: May 26, 2014

Potomac (MD) Bullis quarterback Dwayne Haskins, Jr. is Michigan’s first 2016 offer at the position (image via Gazette)

ADDED TO THE BOARD: 2015
Lakewood (OH) St. Edward’s cornerback Shaun Crawford decommitted from Michigan.

Raleigh (NC) Millbrook defensive end Kengera Daniel was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’5″, 250 lb. prospect with offers from Alabama, Miami, and Tennessee, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 3-star, the #18 weakside end, and #402 overall. He claims a 4.89 forty and had 89 tackles, 13 sacks, and 1 interception as a junior in 2013. I think Daniel looks more like a strongside end with the potential even to grow into a 3-tech defensive tackle eventually.

Virginia Beach (VA) Ocean Lakes wide receiver Jaason Lewis decommitted from UCLA. The 6’3″, 233 lb. prospect is a 247 Composite 4-star, the #15 athlete, and #178 overall. Lewis could play a number of positions, from wide receiver to running back to tight end to linebacker to defensive end. Rivals’ Mike Farrell hinted that there might be a couple more commitments during Lewis’s recruitment, and the most recent Crystal Ball prediction is to Arizona State. As of this time, Michigan is not under consideration.

Dallas (TX) Bishop Dunne wide receiver Anthony “A.D.” Miller was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’4″, 175 lb. prospect with offers from Miami, Nebraska, Ohio State, Oregon, Oregon State, and Washington, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 3-star, the #128 wide receiver, and #1062 overall. As a junior in 2013, he had 34 catches for 482 yards and 10 touchdowns. Miller is a tall, lanky receiver without great speed but with good body control and hands. Michigan recruited cornerback Nick Watkins (Notre Dame) out of Bishop Dunne in the 2014 class.

Nixa (MO) Nixa running back Alec Murphy was offered by Michigan . . . perhaps. Rivals is the only site reporting the offer right now, and this is not the first time that an offer to Murphy has been reported by a recruiting site. If the Wolverines have not extended an offer, then they are almost surely dancing around the idea of doing so. Murphy is a 6’1″, 228 lb. prospect with offers from Illinois, Iowa, Kansas State, Mississippi State, and Purdue, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 3-star, the #65 running back, and #804 overall. As a junior in 2013, he had 209 carries for 1,793 rushing yards and 22 touchdowns. Murphy is a big, powerful back who lacks great long speed.

Pulaski (TN) Giles cornerback Cameron Ordway was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’0″, 174 lb. prospect with offers from Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, LSU, Florida State, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Penn State, and Tennessee, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 4-star, the #22 cornerback, and #234 overall. As a junior in 2013, he had 75 tackles and 9 interceptions. Ordway is a lanky, hard-hitting corner who could also play free safety at the next level.

This is another long update, so hit the jump for 2016 news and some random tidbits.

ADDED TO THE BOARD: 2016
Woodbridge (VA) Freedom defensive end Kyree Campbell was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’5″, 260 lb. prospect with offers from Maryland, Ohio State, and Virginia, among others. He’s a 247 Sports 4-star, the #7 strongside end, and #116 overall. Despite already earning an offer, he plans to visit Michigan for camp in mid-June. Ohio State is his leader currently.

Potomac (MD) Bullis quarterback Dwayne Haskins, Jr. was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’2″, 185 lb. prospect with offers from Clemson, Florida, Maryland, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Virginia Tech, West Virginia, and Wisconsin, among others. As a sophomore in 2013, he completed 72/128 (60%) of his passes for 14 touchdowns and 6 interceptions. Haskins is the first quarterback prospect to be offered in the 2016 class, although his early leader is Ohio State, so Michigan will probably need to extend more. He’s a pretty polished quarterback who has good accuracy and arm strength.

Camden (NJ) Camden wide receiver Brad Hawkins was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’2″, 190 lb. prospect with offers from Florida, Ohio State, Rutgers, South Carolina, and West Virginia, among others. He’s a 247 Sports 4-star, #29 wide receiver, and #152 overall. Hawkins has good speed and leaping ability, and he’s a powerful runner after the catch. He does not play against great competition, but he also does not have a polished quarterback, a combination that allowed him to catch 45 passes for 805 yards (17.9 yards/catch) and 14 touchdowns as a sophomore in 2013.

Reading (PA) Exeter offensive tackle Michael Menet was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’5″, 250 lb. prospect with offers from Florida State, Maryland, Ohio State, Penn State, Pitt, Rutgers, and South Carolina, among others. He’s a 247 Sports 4-star, the #9 offensive tackle, and #44 overall. He has the feet to play left tackle and the athleticism to easily dunk a basketball (click on his highlights), so he’s an impressive prospect. Most prognostications have him ending up as a Nittany Lion.

Egg Harbor (NJ) Cedar Creek athlete Ahmir Mitchell was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’2″, 197 lb. prospect with offers from Florida State, Rutgers, and Virginia, among others. He also claims a 4.6 forty. Mitchell is a big prospect who plays running back, receiver, and safety, but he looks more comfortable to me on defense. I believe he would be best as a strong safety, but he has some thickness that could lead him to grow into an outside linebacker. He grew up in Virginia and his older brother, Mitchell, was a 3-star prospect who signed with Arkansas in 2013.

Fort Lauderdale (FL) Coconut Creek wide receiver Binjimen Victor is a 6’4″, 170 lb. prospect with offers from Clemson, Miami, Ohio State, Rutgers, South Florida, and West Virginia, among others. He transferred from Northeast High School in the Miami metro area. Victor is a big receiver with long arms but not a great deal of speed. He is an older prospect for being a rising junior (already over 17), so he may not develop as much as other prospects.

Fort Lauderdale (FL) Coconut Creek cornerback Malek Young was offered by Michigan. He’s a 5’10”, 175 lb. prospect with offers from Clemson, Louisville, Miami, Rutgers, South Florida, and West Virginia, among others. He’s a slight but speedy cornerback with good cover skills and who’s dangerous with the ball in his hands. He has named Florida State as his outright favorite, though the Seminoles have yet to offer.

MISCELLANEOUS
Here’s the running list of players to have been visited by Michigan’s coaches in the month of May.

Last week on Recruiting Season, I profiled St. Joseph’s DE Corey Malone-Hatcher, Haslett’s Brandon Allen, U of D Jesuit’s Ryan Brand, Detroit Cass Tech’s Michael Onwenu, and Saginaw Swan Valley’s Alex Grace.
