A Look at Potential Future Michigan Recruits

Chelsea running back Berkley Edwards breaks outside against Monroe

A post showed up on Tuesday from Jim Stefani’s blog.  Stefani is a recruiting “expert” with an encyclopedic knowledge of high school recruiting, and he unleashed his knowledge of the state of Michigan on his readers.

There are many potential 2013 and 2014 prospects with ties to Michigan, including:

• Braylon Edwards’ little brother Berkley, a running back from Chelsea
• Harlan Huckleby’s son Eddie, a running back/defensive back from Farmington Hills Harrison
• Antonio Bass’ little brother Amani, a quarterback from Jackson Lumen Christi
• Rocko Khoury’s cousin Jake Khoury, a lineman from Traverse City West
• John Jaeckin’s son John, Jr., a lineman from Lakewood St. Edward (Ohio)
• Craig Roh’s brother Jake, a tight end from Scottsdale Chaparral (Arizona)
• Paul Heuerman’s (Michigan basketball player) son Mike, a tight end from Naples Barron Collier (Florida)

Former Michigan Athlete of the Week: Mario Manningham

New York Giants wide receiver Mario Manningham had 8 catches for 113 yards and 2 touchdowns.  Unfortunately for him, the Giants lost to the Eagles on a last-second punt return by Desean Jackson.  Final score: 38-31.

Honorable mention: Arizona Cardinals defensive tackle Alan Branch had 6 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, and 1 forced fumble, but the Cardinals lost to the Seattle Seahawks by a score of 19-12.

Former Michigan Athlete of the Week: David Bowens

David Bowens (#6) played defensive end for Michigan for a couple seasons before running into academic trouble.

This is a blast from the past.  Cleveland Browns defensive end David Bowens had his best career game on Saturday.  Bowens only had 1 tackle in Sunday’s victory over the New Orleans Saints, but he made 2 interceptions, both of which were returned for touchdowns.  One interception was returned 64 yards for the TD, while the other was taken back 30 yards for the score.  Bowens has played 12 seasons in the NFL for the Broncos, Packers, Dolphins, Jets, and Browns.  Altogether, he has 294 tackles, 38 sacks, 8 forced fumbles, and 4 interceptions.  Bowens struggled with academics and personal issues as a Wolverine, although he totaled 12 sacks in his final season in Ann Arbor (1996) before transferring to Western Illinois and playing out his college eligibility.

Honorable mention: Defensive tackle Alan Branch, currently of the Arizona Cardinals, had 5 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, 2 sacks, 1 forced fumble, and 4 quarterback hurries in Sunday’s 22-10 loss to the Seattle Seahawks.
