Recruiting Update: May 7, 2012

Jordan Cunningham looks like a man already.

ADDED TO THE BOARD (2013, 2014)
Wyomissing (PA) Wyomissing Area linebacker Alex Anzalone decommitted from Ohio State.  Anzalone was offered by Michigan several months ago, but was eventually turned away from visiting in light of the balls-to-the-wall recruitment of E.J. Levenberry.  Shortly afterward, Anzalone committed to the Buckeyes.  However, in the past several days, it was revealed that a Buckeye fan who is a sex offender had made contact with several Ohio State recruits, including Anzalone and Joey Bosa.  That situation seems to have contributed to Anzalone’s decommitment, although there seem to be some other issues between him and OSU, too.  He is not expecting the Buckeyes to stay in the mix.  Michigan already told him they were full at linebacker, but I guess there’s a chance that Levenberry’s commitment to Florida State could reopen avenues to Ann Arbor.

Fort Lauderdale (FL) University School defensive tackle Maquedius Bain was offered by Michigan.  He is currently committed to Florida State.  The 6’3″, 308-pounder also has offers from Alabama, Florida, LSU, Miami, and USC, among others. (Highlights here.)

Fort Lauderdale (FL) University School wide receiver Jordan Cunningham was offered by Michigan.  He’s 6’3″, 175 lbs. and the teammate of Bain.  Cunningham also has a long list of offers that includes Alabama, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, LSU, Miami, Notre Dame, Ohio State, USC, and numerous others.  As a sophomore in 2010, he had 59 catches for 1,038 yards (17.6 yards per catch) and 10 touchdowns.  As a junior in 2011, his numbers dropped a little to 40 receptions for 700 yards (17.5 yards per catch) and 10 touchdowns.  He reminds me a little of Justin Blackmon in this highlight reel:

Lakeland (FL) Kathleen safety Ja’von Harrison, a 2014 prospect, was offered by Michigan last week.  Harrison is a 6’2″, 192 lb. safety who also has an offer from Virginia Tech.  Last year he had 17 catches for 400 yards and 2 touchdowns, but he didn’t play a whole lot of defense. (Highlights here, but ignore the “2013” thing; Harrison is in the class of 2014.)

Brooklyn (NY) Thomas Jefferson defensive end Ebenezer Ogundeko was offered by Michigan.  Ogundeko is a 6’4″, 237 lb. weakside end prospect with offers from Alabama, Florida, Notre Dame, Stanford, and Tennessee, among others.  As a junior in 2011, he had 79 tackles and 11 sacks. I could see him growing into a strongside end eventually.  (Highlights here.)

Washington (DC) H.D. Woodson cornerback D’Andre Payne, a 2014 prospect, was offered by Michigan.  The 5’9″, 172 lb. sophomore also has offers from Arkansas, Maryland, Ohio State, Penn State, and Virginia Tech, among others. (Highlights here.)

Bolingbrook (IL) Bolingbrook cornerback Parrker Westphal, a 2014 prospect, was offered by Michigan.  The 6’0″, 180 lb. corner had 56 tackles, 20 pass breakups, 7 tackles for loss, 2 sacks, 1 forced fumble, and 2 fumble recoveries as a junior in 2011.  His position coach at Bolingbrook is former Michigan cornerback Todd Howard.

OFF THE BOARD
Wylie (TX) East wide receiver Marcell Ateman committed to Oklahoma State.  With the Cowboys’ recent record of throwing the ball all over the field and putting out wide receivers, I can’t say that I blame him.

Bastrop (TX) Bastrop cornerback Antwuan Davis committed to Texas.  As often happens, Michigan is striking out on Texas recruits.  That’s the nature of the beast.  I scouted Davis a couple weeks ago, and he’s a very physical corner who could perhaps end up playing safety at the next level.

College Station (TX) A&M defensive end Christian Lacouture committed to Nebraska.  Lacouture visited Michigan a couple months ago and thoroughly enjoyed his visit, but it was thought that he would be hard to pull away from LSU.  But the Cornhuskers snuck up on everyone a little bit and grabbed a commitment.  Lacouture was previously committed to Texas A&M, so I wouldn’t put it out of the question for him to open up his recruitment again.

Mesquite (TX) West Mesquite wide receiver Eldridge Massington committed to USC.  He was thought to be a USC lean but he didn’t have a USC offer.  That all changed last week when the Trojans came through with the verbal offer.  He didn’t wait long before committing.  I scouted Massington last week, and they’re getting a good receiver out there in southern California.

Columbus (OH) Walnut Ridge wide receiver Rob Wheelwright committed to Wisconsin.  Michigan reportedly backed off on recruiting Wheelwright.  That could very well be because Wheelwright is a similar receiver to Michigan commit Jaron Dukes, a tall guy with good leaping ability but without a whole lot of speed.  Michigan seems to want an elite big guy who can stretch the field (like LaQuon Treadwell) and a smaller quick guy who can also stretch the field (like Sebastian Larue).

MISCELLANEOUS
Quarterback Shane Morris earned an invitation to the Elite 11 finals when he was in Columbus this weekend.  They will be held this summer in California.

Meanwhile, Morris, offensive guard David Dawson, defensive end Taco Charlton, and linebacker Mike McCray each earned invitations to The Opening, the second annual athletic competition sponsored by Nike and held at Oregon.  That will also take place this summer.

Weekend Visitors: March 9-11, 2012

Rumors have been swirling that Massillon (OH) Washington cornerback Gareon Conley (#21)
might be the next recruit to drop for Michigan
(image via Friday Night Ohio)

Zach Bradshaw – WR – Damascus (MD) Damascus: Bradshaw is a 6’3″, 205 lb. wideout with 4.56 speed.  He has an offer from Michigan, along with Maryland, South Carolina, West Virginia, and several others.  He had 28 receptions for 395 yards and 6 touchdowns last season, plus 250 rushing yards for 2 touchdowns, and 2 punt return touchdowns.  (Highlights here.)

Gareon Conley – CB – Massillon (OH) Washington: Conley is a 6’1″, 170 lb. cornerback with an offer from Michigan, plus from the likes of Northwestern, Toledo, and West Virginia.  He had 26 tackles and 4 picks as a junior in 2011.  There is a good chance that Conley will be committing to Michigan on this weekend’s visit.

David Dawson – OT – Detroit (MI) Cass Tech:
Dawson is a 6’4″, 305 lb. offensive lineman who committed to Michigan in mid-February.  Despite being projected by most as an offensive guard, he says that Michigan’s coaches want to start him out at right tackle and see how things go.  (Commitment post here.)

Jaleel Hytchye – CB – Cincinnati (OH) LaSalle: Hytchye is a 5’11”, 170 lb. cornerback who does not yet hold an offer from Michigan.  He does, however, have offers from Kentucky, Kent State, and Western Kentucky.  Last season Hytchye made 30 tackles, 14 pass breakups, and 4 interceptions.  Because Michigan is generally looking for corners who are 6’0″ or taller, chances are slim that he will get an offer at this point.  (Highlights here.)

Ty Isaac – RB – Joliet (IL) Catholic: Isaac is a 6’3″, 215 lb. runner with offers from all over the country, including Michigan.  He is generally thought to be #1 on Michigan’s running back board and early leaders seem to be Michigan and Notre Dame.  He carried the ball 178 times for 2,114 yards and 45 touchdowns as a junior in 2011.  (Highlights here.)

Shane Jones – LB – Cincinnati (OH) Moeller: Jones is a 6’1″, 220 lb. ‘backer from the same high school as 2012 wide receiver target Monty Madaris (Michigan State).  He made 89 tackles, 9 tackles for loss, and 2 sacks as a junior in 2011.  He looks like a weakside linebacker or possibly a MIKE.  He holds an offer from Michigan, along with Michigan State, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Penn State, among others.  (EDIT: Jones, like Anzalone below, also canceled his trip to Michigan due to the linebacker position being full.) (Highlights here.)

Colin McGovern – OT – New Lenox (IL) Lincoln-Way West: McGovern is a 6’7″, 280 lb. tackle with offers from Alabama, Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Ohio State, and Wisconsin, among others.  He also had an offer Michigan, although the Wolverines are currently full at the offensive line positions unless something changes.  (Highlights here.)

Shane Morris – QB – Warren (MI) De La Salle: Morris committed to Michigan in the summer of 2011.  (Commitment post here.)

Dylan Roney – DE – Novi (MI) Catholic Central: Roney is a 6’2″, 215 lb. defensive end from the class of 2014.  He has no scholarship offers at this point.  Roney made 75 tackles, 8.5 sacks, 3 forced fumbles, and 1 fumble recovery as a sophomore in 2011.  He is the teammate of incoming freshman defensive end Matt Godin and 2013 running back commit Wyatt Shallman. (Highlights here.)

NOTE: Wyomissing (PA) Wyomissing Area linebacker Alex Anzalone was originally scheduled to visit Michigan this weekend, too.  However, he stated that Michigan told him they were full at his position, which could mean several things.  Since Anzalone looks like a SAM to me, it might mean that recent commit Mike McCray took that spot.  It could also mean that Michigan has received a silent commitment from another player.  And another possibility is that the coaches are saving a spot for E.J. Levenberry.

COMMITMENT
Columbus (OH) Marion Franklin wide receiver Jaron Dukes committed to Michigan.

Wexford (PA) North Allegheny offensive guard/center Patrick Kugler committed to Michigan.

ADDED TO THE BOARD (2013, 2014)
Vienna (GA) Dooly County defensive tackle Montravius Adams was offered by Michigan last week.  He’s a 6’4″, 280 lb. prospect with offers from everywhere – Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Miami, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, and USC.  He had 84 tackles, a whopping 45 tackles for loss, and 10 sacks as a junior in 2011.

Wyomissing (PA) Wyomissing Area linebacker Alex Anzalone was offered by Michigan.  He’s a 6’3″, 220 lb. linebacker who looks like a SAM linebacker prospect for the Wolverines.  He has offers from Alabama, Florida, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Penn State, Rutgers, and South Carolina, among others.

Fort Lauderdale (FL) St. Thomas Aquinas defensive end Joey Bosa was offered by Michigan last week.  He’s a 6’5″, 260 lb. strongside end or possibly a defensive tackle.  He has offers from Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Florida State, Ohio State, and many others.  As a junior in 2011, he had 52 tackles, 18 tackles for loss, and 8 sacks.

Charlotte (NC) Vance linebacker Larenz Bryant is listed by 247 Sports as having a Michigan offer, but it’s unclear when he received it.  He’s a 6’1″, 203 lb. inside ‘backer with a 4.58 forty.  As a junior in 2011, he had 144 tackles, 7 sacks, and 2 interceptions.  Bryant also has offers from Clemson, Georgia, Illinois, the two in-state schools, South Carolina, and Virginia Tech.  He recently named a top five that does not include Michigan.

Washington (DC) Gonzaga cornerback Devin Butler was offered by the Wolverines.  He’s a 6’1″, 170 lb. defensive back who has offers from Iowa, Maryland, Nebraska, North Carolina, Penn State, and West Virginia, along with several others.  As a junior in 2011, he had 43 tackles, 6 interceptions (1 returned for a touchdown), and 12 pass breakups.

Baltimore (MD) Gilman quarterback/safety Shane Cockerille was offered by Michigan last week.  Cockerille is a 6’2″, 205 lb. athlete who is being recruited by the Wolverines as a safety.  He has offers from Maryland and Temple.

Oakley (CA) Freedom wide receiver Darrell Daniels was offered by Michigan.  He’s a 6’3″, 200 lb. wideout who has offers from Arkansas, Colorado, Oregon State, and UCLA.

Rancho Cucamonga (CA) Rancho Cucamonga cornerback Chris Hawkins was offered by Michigan on Tuesday.  He’s a 6’0″, 170-pounder who has offers from Cal, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Stanford, and UCLA, among others.  He had 56 tackles and 2 interceptions as a junior in 2011.  While Hawkins did express excitement about his Michigan offer, the general feeling is that he will stay close to home in California.

Pendleton (SC) Pendleton defensive tackle Michael Hill received a Michigan offer last week.  Hill is a 6’3″, 315 lb. nose tackle with offers from Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Florida, South Carolina, and Tennessee, among others.  Hill is expected to remain down south like most recruits from the deep south.

Chandler (AZ) Hamilton cornerback Cole Luke was offered by Michigan on Wednesday.  He’s a 6’0″, 165 lb. corner with offers from Arizona, Arizona State, Nebraska, Notre Dame, and Oklahoma, along with several offers.  He had 63 tackles and 6 interceptions as a junior in 2011.

OFF THE BOARD

Dallas (TX) Jesuit offensive tackle J.J. Gustafson committed to Texas A&M.  The Aggies are running neck-and-neck with (well, actually slightly behind) Michigan for the top class in 2013, although there’s obviously a long way to go.  Gustafson’s teammate, wide receiver Jake Oliver, also had a Michigan offer and committed to A&M the previous week.
