Ex-Wolverine Updates: Pre-season 2015

Former Michigan running back commit Damien Harris is battling for playing time at Alabama

Well, the making of this post included my baptism into the annoying world of WordPress. There are some nice things about WordPress, but I really missed Blogger yesterday morning when I worked on this post from approximately 5:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. – with intermittent breaks for necessities – only to have 50% of it disappear into the ether.

Former QB Russell Bellomy: Bellomy’s coach at the University of Texas-San Antonio, Larry Coker, says that Bellomy is in the running . . . to win the #2 job (LINK). That says a lot about Bellomy’s talent level. If you disagree, consider that the entrenched starter, Blake Bogenschutz, went 22/39 (56.4%) for 282 yards, 0 touchdowns, and 2 interceptions last year.

Former OG Kyle Bosch: Bosch, who received a waiver to play this year after transferring to West Virginia in the off-season, is in a battle to start at offensive guard or potentially tackle this fall.

Former TE commit Pharaoh Brown: Brown, who suffered a nasty knee injury last season, will likely be the starter at tight end again this fall for Oregon. As a junior in 2014, he made 25 catches for 420 yards and 6 touchdowns.

Ex-Wolverine Update: Another Pre-Season Edition

Demetrius Hart (#1) has moved on from Alabama to Colorado State (image via 247 Sports)

Former DT Richard Ash: I already reported that Ash will be playing for Western Michigan this fall. What I didn’t know until recently is that he will wear the #9 as a defensive tackle. You have to love single-digit numbers on defensive linemen, especially tackles.

Former S Josh Furman: Furman is listed as a 6’2″, 202 lb. linebacker for Oklahoma State. He’s #1 on the depth chart at “Star,” and you can see why they wanted him – his backup is a 6’2″, 190 lb. freshman, and the other four players on the linebacker two-deep are one junior, two sophomores, and another freshman. They open against Florida State on August 30th.

Former RB commit Demetrius Hart: Hart is a grad transfer from Alabama to Colorado State. He struggled to break through at Alabama and had some off-the-field troubles, but former Crimson Tide offensive coordinator Jim McElwain is now at CSU. Now Hart is trying to earn the starting gig for the Rams. They open against Colorado on August 29th.

Former LB Kaleb Ringer: Ringer – and his brother – are not listed on Ferris State’s football roster this fall.

Former CB commit Anthony Standifer: Standifer was booted from Ole Miss’s program after getting into some trouble, and he now appears on the roster of Eastern Illinois (his home state), which plays in the FCS’s Ohio Valley Conference.

Former OT commit Denzel Ward: Ward is listed as a 6’8″, 353 lb. freshman offensive tackle for Syracuse.

Former DE/DT Ken Wilkins: Wilkins appears on the California University of Pennsylvania football roster as a junior 6’3″, 250 lb. defensive lineman. It is a destination for some former big-time football players, including Jeff Knox (a former Pitt player who was booted for attacking a girl who told him she was pregnant) and Desimon Green (a former Texas Tech commit).

Ex-Wolverine Updates

Isaiah Bell (left, with Fitzgerald Toussaint in high school) had the best game of his college career.

DE Isaiah Bell: Bell, who started at defensive end for Lake Erie College, had a big game for the Storm. He had 2 tackles, 1 sack, forced 1 fumble, and returned it 97 yards for a touchdown. Lake Erie beat Wayne State by a score of 35-17.

He had 5 carries for 48 yards and 2 touchdowns on the ground, along with 1 catch for a 5-yard touchdown. And that wasn’t even against the backups – Crawford scored the first, fourth, and sixth touchdowns of the day. Miami beat Bethune Cookman by a score of 77-0.

S Vladimir Emilien: Emilien had 2 tackles as a backup safety in Toledo’s 38-17 victory over Central Michigan.

K Matt Goudis: Goudis was 11/11 on extra points in Miami’s 77-0 victory over Bethune Cookman.

S Carvin Johnson: Johnson had 9 tackles and 1 pass breakup, but Hampton lost to Coastal Carolina by a score of 50-17.

WR Je’Ron Stokes: Stokes had 3 catches for 48 yards and 1 touchdown in Norfolk State’s 20-12 loss to Charleston Southern.

S Ray Vinopal: Vinopal started at free safety and had 9 tackles in Pitt’s 58-55 victory over Duke.

CB Adrian Witty: Witty, a starting safety for Cincinnati, had 3 tackles in a 66-9 win over Northwestern State.

Kaleb Ringer, ex-Wolverine

Kaleb Ringer

Redshirt freshman linebacker Kaleb Ringer has left Michigan’s football program, reportedly for the fertile football lands of Ferris State.  Ringer was a member of the 2012 recruiting class and committed in April 2011, choosing the Wolverines over teams like Cincinnati, Illinois, Iowa, and Louisville.  Brady Hoke and his staff recruited him as a weakside linebacker.

Ringer suffered a knee injury as a senior in high school and missed a large chunk of his final prep season, presumably because of that injury.  He enrolled early in January 2012 and played in the spring game but ended up having surgery on the knee, which knocked him out of the regular season and caused him to take a redshirt.  As a thickly built linebacker – who in my opinion lacked something in the quickness department – Ringer moved from the weakside to the middle linebacker position for spring practices here in 2013, and he did play a little bit in the spring game.  It’s unclear at this point why he is leaving the program, but junior Desmond Morgan and sophomore James Ross seem to have locked down the middle and weakside linebacker positions, respectively.  At best, Ringer probably could have been a special teamer and the third string MIKE for the upcoming year, behind Morgan and sophomore Joe Bolden.

In perhaps my most accurate TTB Rating so far, I updated Ringer’s rating just before National Signing Day 2012 to reflect a 39 for Ringer, which indicates a “Below average backup or special teams contributor.”  You can see in the comments on that thread that I had an inkling about the potential for Ringer not to last four years at Michigan.  He is the first casualty from the 2012 class.  Before dropping him to a 39, I had initially rated Ringer as a 64, so I was not expecting him to be a major player in Michigan’s lineup.

The loss of Ringer doesn’t really hurt Michigan for the 2013 season, since he was not expected to be in the two-deep.  Linebackers often make decent special teams players because they have a good combination of speed and physicality, but that was probably his best chance to get on the field this year.  However, this does further impact the numbers at linebacker, which also took a hit when redshirt junior Jake Ryan tore his ACL in spring practice.  A unit that was expected to be rather deep this season is now down two men.  Beyond the 2013 season, Ringer could very well have been stuck behind Morgan in 2014 and Bolden for another season after that, so we might be looking at 2016 before he would have had a serious shot at playing time; by then he would have been a fifth year senior.  In a slightly odd development, Michigan brought in four linebackers in 2012 (Ross, Bolden, Ringer, and Royce Jenkins-Stone), and all three remaining players will be true sophomores this year.

Michigan needed to get down to the scholarship limit of 85 prior to the season, and this puts them at the limit.  With fifteen seniors scheduled to play their final season in 2013, Michigan is looking at a 2014 recruiting class of 15; that number will surely increase, and word is that the coaches are already recruiting for a 16-man class.  Perhaps they already know of another player or two who are on the way out, and there have already been rumors of a third player to be on his way.  You may remember that I mentioned a few months ago that I had heard rumors of a few players who might depart – well, Ringer and Ken Wilkins were two of the names that heard.  We’ll see if the third one develops.

Anyway, Ringer’s departure may explain the fairly recent offer to East St. Louis (IL) East St. Louis linebacker Kyron Watson.  Some insiders have suggested that Michigan would take Clairton (PA) Thomas Jefferson SAM prospect Chase Winovich or  middle linebacker prospect Watson, but I believe the Wolverines might take both if they want to come.  The coaches clearly offered Watson with the knowledge that they needed a SAM, so the plan is either a) take a SAM and a MIKE or b) move Michael Ferns III to SAM if Watson commits.  Winovich will visit this coming weekend, and Watson plans to visit the following weekend.
