Poll Results: Which February 18/19 commit will be best?

If readers of this blog are correct, Chris Fox will be one of the jewels of the class

A couple weekends ago, Michigan got commitments from eight 2013 commits.  Shortly afterward I posted a poll asking which of those eight would have the best career.  Since then Ohio’s Jaron Dukes and Pennsylvania’s Patrick Kugler have committed, too, so the fun never stops.  Here are the results of the poll:

Chris Fox: 20%
The Parker (CO) Ponderosa product could play just about anywhere on the line except center.  For such a thick kid, he’s an athletic kid who doesn’t have a problem staying low and getting leverage on opponents.  The 6’6″, 295 lb. Fox is ranked as high as #46 overall to Rivals.

Kyle Bosch: 19% (tie)
The Wheaton (IL) St. Francis lineman is 6’5″, 286 lbs. and projects to offensive guard for the Wolverines.  247 Sports thinks highly enough of him to rank him the #44 overall player in the country.

Logan Tuley-Tillman: 19% (tie)
The 6’7″, 304 lb. blindside tackle from Peoria (IL) Manual is the #85 overall player to 247 Sports.

Jake Butt: 13%
Butt is a 6’6″, 230 lb. tight end from Pickerington (OH) North.  He’s ranked as high as #96 overall to Rivals.

Taco Charlton: 10%
Charlton is a 6’6″, 240 lb. linebacker/defensive end from Pickerington (OH) Central.  His highest ranking comes from 247 Sports at #99 overall.

Jourdan Lewis: 7%
Detroit (MI) Cass Tech cornerback is a 5’11”, 170-pounder.  Rivals likes him best (so far) with his placement at #167 overall on the Rivals 250.

Wyatt Shallman: 5%
Novi (MI) Catholic Central running back Shallman is a 6’3″, 255 lb. athlete.  Rivals thinks he’s the 160th-best player in the nation.

David Dawson: 3%
Detroit (MI) Cass Tech offensive guard/center Dawson is the #199 player to Rivals.  He stands 6’5″ and weighs 305 lbs.

Beaver Falls (PA) Blackhawk quarterback Chandler Kincade
(image via Scout)

Remember last week when a bunch of players gave me carpal tunnel?  Me, too.  But it’s not happening again this weekend.

Jack Keeler – OT – Barrington (IL) Barrington:  Keeler is a 6’7″, 285 lb. tackle with offers from Northern Illinois, Toledo, West Virginia, and Western Michigan.  He is a good player, but Michigan only plans to take one more offensive lineman.  With some elite kids still on the board, I think it’s unlikely that they’ll pursue someone with a relatively low profile like Keeler. (Highlights here.)

Chandler Kincade – QB – Beaver Falls (PA) Blackhawk: Chandler is a 6’4″, 215-pounder who’s currently committed to Pitt for the class of 2014.  He made his pledge back in November before Todd Graham left for Arizona State and a bunch of others headed for Arizona, so he may be thinking of a change of scenery.  His only current offer came from Pitt, which is probably partly because he was injured for much of the 2011 season.  He had just 547 yards, 3 touchdowns, and 1 interception in five games.  His highlights are pretty awesome . . . especially since he’s a 9th grader in them:

Patrick Kugler – OG – Wexford (PA) North Allegheny:
Kugler is a 6’5″, 280 lb. guard prospect with offers from Arizona, Cal, Florida, Florida State, Iowa, Maryland, Miami, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Penn State, Pitt, Stanford, Tennessee, Virginia Tech, West Virginia, and several others.  He’s the #54 overall player to Rivals, although I have yet to see any highlights of him.

Logan Tuley-Tillman – OT – Peoria (IL) Manual: Tuley-Tillman committed to Michigan last weekend.  He’s also angry at me for saying “he’s not that good right now,” despite the fact that I went on to say that he has a chance to be very good once he gets some quality coaching.

I guess TTB Andrew won’t be interviewing Mr. Tuley-Tillman anytime soon.

Logan Tuley-Tillman, Wolverine

Peoria (IL) Manual offensive tackle
Logan Tuley-Tillman

Peoria (IL) Manual offensive tackle Logan Tuley-Tillman committed to Michigan on Sunday evening.  He chose the Wolverines over offers from Alabama, Arkansas, Florida State, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Missouri, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oklahoma State, Purdue, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas A&M, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.

Tuley-Tillman is a 6’7″, 300 lb. lineman who projects to the left tackle position in college.  As a junior in 2011, he recorded 61 pancake blocks.

Ratings:
ESPN: Unranked OT
Rivals: 4-star OT, #109 overall
Scout: Unranked OT
247 Sports: 4-star OT, 94 grade, #13 OT, #85 overall

Tuley-Tillman had originally planned to take all of his official visits.  He essentially wanted to take advantage of the opportunity to travel and see the country.  However, Michigan went on a bit of a run in the past couple days with commitments from three offensive lineman.  The coaches probably want to take four or five linemen in this class, and if he had waited much longer, he might have been left out in the cold.  Unfortunately, he won’t be able to travel the country just yet if he wants to stay committed to Michigan (the coaches won’t let kids travel elsewhere without considering them decommitted).  On the plus side, if everything goes well, he’ll get a chance to visit California, Florida, Arizona, or Louisiana when Michigan takes trips to BCS bowl games in the next few seasons.

It’s analysis time, and here’s where things get rough:

Logan Tuley-Tillman is not very good right now.  He has size, athleticism, and potential galore.  But every offensive line recruit Michigan picked up this weekend has better technique than him.  Tuley-Tillman played for a 3-6 Manual team that emphasizes the run, and even his footwork in the running game is questionable.  It looks like Tuley-Tillman has never had a day of quality offensive line coaching.

When he run blocks, he stands up too high.  He picks his foot up and puts it right back down where it was.  He crosses his feet at times.  He keeps a narrow base.  When he pass blocks, he doesn’t give ground, which opens things up for speed rushes.  And you can see during his Core 6 videos (here and here) that he doesn’t know how to cancel the inside rush if those speed rushers try to make an inside move.  He is a huge project at this time.

That’s the bad stuff.  Now for the good stuff:

Tuley-Tillman could be a very good blindside tackle in a few years.  If he takes to the coaching at Michigan and learns footwork and technique, the sky is the limit.  He’s got skinny legs and a big butt, which makes him a prime candidate to carry added weight in his butt and upper body and turn into a 315 lb., mobile tackle.  He also displays a nasty attitude about blocking that will serve him well when he figures out how to put it all together.

It’s somewhat difficult for me to project Tuley-Tillman down the road.  He has all kinds of potential, but it all depends on how quickly he figures it out.  Less athletic guys than him have turned into multi-year starters in recent years (Perry Dorrestein, Mark Huyge, etc.).  He could be a first round pick in 2018, or he could get frustrated and leave Michigan early.  He loves the University of Michigan, which will hopefully keep him around through the tough times.  But it’s not going to be an easy road for him to adjust.

Weekend Visitors: February 17-20, 2012

Detroit (MI) Cass Tech offensive guard David Dawson will likely get a Michigan offer during his weekend visit.  Here

Sam Webb, from Scout and the Detroit News, has stated that Michigan will receive some “good news” today at noon on WTKA.  And I’m pretty sure he’s not talking about someone getting pregnant.

Anyway, who’s visiting Michigan this weekend?  These guys:

Kyle Bosch – OG – Wheaton (IL) St. Francis: I wrote a scouting report on Bosch a few weeks ago.  Bosch visited Michigan twice during the 2011 season and is headed back to Ann Arbor for more.  He’s the #44 player to 247 Sports and the #60 player to Rivals, so he’s an upper echelon recruit.  Do not expect a commitment from him in the near future, though.

Jake Butt – TE – Pickerington (OH) North: Butt has also visited Michigan previously and has stated that Michigan is his leader “by far.”  Butt wants to take other visits, but the general feeling is that the Wolverines will be difficult to beat.  He could pair with 2013 commit Khalid Hill to make a nice combo of tight end prospects who complement each other.

Taco Charlton – DE – Pickerington (OH) Central: Charlton is a 6’6″, 240 lb. prospect who could play either weakside or strongside end for Michigan.  The Wolverines are considered to reside at the top of his list, and there’s a shot that he will commit to Michigan soon.

Rod Crayton – DT – Dadeville (AL) Dadeville: Crayton is coming all the way from Alabama in pursuit of an offer.  Scout lists him as already holding an offer, but MGoBlog’s Ace Anbender spoke with him recently, and Crayton said Michigan’s coaching staff wants to get him on campus first.  Regardless, I would be surprised if he walked away from Ann Arbor without an offer.  He projects to the nose tackle position for Michigan.

David Dawson – OG – Detroit (MI) Cass Tech: Dawson has not yet been offered by Michigan, but there’s a very good chance he will be offered when he’s on campus this weekend.  He played the 2011 season in Houston but has returned to Cass Tech, a traditional pipeline to Ann Arbor.  Dawson recently picked up an offer from Alabama, so Michigan may want to get on the offer bandwagon before any other teams have a chance to build up an insurmountable lead in pursuit of the 6’5″, 305 lb. interior lineman.

Ross Douglas – CB – Avon (OH) Avon: Douglas has not yet been offered by Michigan.  He has offers from Connecticut, Minnesota, Northwestern, and Tennessee, among others.  The 5’10”, 180-pounder also plays running back for Avon.  Michigan is recruiting a couple other small-ish athletes, but mostly the Wolverines have been pursuing bigger corners and bigger running backs.  I wouldn’t be surprised if he picks up an offer this weekend, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he doesn’t.

Kenton Gibbs – DT – Detroit (MI) Cass Tech: Gibbs is a 6’2″, 290 lb. nose tackle prospect with MAC offers so far.  There’s a chance that Michigan will offer him this weekend, but I’m not sure that they should.  With over eleven months to go until signing day, I think Michigan ought to give elite defensive tackles a chance to get to Michigan.  Gibbs seems like the type who might jump on a Michigan offer almost immediately.

Khalid Hill – TE – Detroit (MI) Crockett: Hill committed to Michigan a couple weeks ago.

De’Niro Laster – WR – Shaker Heights (OH) Shaker Heights: Laster will be visiting Michigan on Monday.  He has yet to receive an offer from Michigan, and I wouldn’t necessarily expect one soon.  More so than wide receiver, it seems like he would be a prospect for the U position at Michigan, which already has one commitment in the form of Khalid Hill.  He does not seem to have the speed to play wideout for the Wolverines.

Jourdan Lewis – CB – Detroit (MI) Cass Tech: Hill is a 5’11”, 170 lb. cornerback whose recruitment will likely take off in the very near future . . . if he doesn’t commit to Michigan before then.  The general feeling is that he will commit to Michigan in the relatively near future.

Malik McDowell – DE – Detroit (MI) Loyola: The 6’6″, 260 lb. McDowell was supposed to visit Michigan on Thursday, but he did NOT make the trip to Ann Arbor due to illness.  He’s a 2014 prospect who does not have an offer from the Wolverines yet, but Michigan has selectively tossed out offers to a handful of 2014 prospects and McDowell could be the recipient as soon as he reschedules the trip.

Nyles Morgan – LB – Crete (IL) Crete-Monee: Morgan, another 2014 prospect, is a 6’2″, 200 lb. inside linebacker who goes to the same school as 2013 target Laquon Treadwell and former 2012 Michigan commit Anthony Standifer.

Shane Morris – QB – Warren (MI) De La Salle: Morris, one of the top few quarterbacks in the country, committed to Michigan last May.

Donovan Munger – DT – Shaker Heights (OH) Shaker Heights: Munger is a 6’3″, 278 lb. defensive tackle who will be visiting Michigan on Monday along with teammate De’Niro Laster.  He has not yet been offered by Michigan, but with an offer list that includes Auburn, Illinois, Penn State, Tennessee, and West Virginia, it’s not hard to imagine that he’ll get one on his visit.  He could play nose tackle or perhaps offensive guard for the Wolverines if they were to throw their hat into the ring.

Ethan Pocic – OT – Lemont (IL) Lemont: Pocic is a 6’7″, 285-pounder who holds offers from almost the entire Big Ten, including Michigan, and various schools around the country.  He doesn’t speak much to the media, much like fellow Lemont product David Molk.  A commitment should not be expected in the near future, but this is a return trip for Pocic, so his interest in Michigan is serious.

Logan Tuley-Tillman – OT – Peoria (IL) Manual: Tuley-Tillman is a 6’7″, 280 lb. lineman with offers from almost every major program in the country.  He is not expected to commit anywhere soon, but Michigan is considered to be his outright leader, especially since this will be his sixth or seventh visit to Ann Arbor over the last few months.

Weekend Visitors: February 10-12, 2012

Laquon Treadwell will be in Ann Arbor this weekend
(image via 247 Sports)

Four juniors and one sophomore prospect are expected to visit Michigan this weekend:

St. Louis (MO) DeSmet OT Andy Bauer (2014)
Bauer is only a sophomore in high school, but he was named a sophomore All-American and First Team All-Missouri.  He’s 6’5″ and 290 lbs., benches 315 lbs., and reports a 500 lb. squat.  Those are amazing numbers for a high school sophomore.  Bauer has not yet been offered by the Wolverines, but a verbal offer might be forthcoming.  Class of 2012 wide receiver Durron Neal, who was offered by Michigan but chose Oklahoma, also goes to DeSmet.

Columbus (OH) Marion Franklin WR Jaron Dukes

Despite growing up in the heart of Buckeye country, Dukes grew up as a Michigan fan.  The 6’4″, 195 lb. Dukes received a Michigan offer last week and has been rumored to be a candidate to make an early commitment to the Wolverines.

Parker (CO) Ponderosa OT Chris Fox
Much like Dukes (except without living in such a horrible state), Fox grew up as a Michigan fan.  He’s 6’6″, 297 lbs. and really impressed at several camps last summer.  Colorado, Iowa, Ohio State, and Purdue have also offered Fox.  He looks like a guard or perhaps a right tackle to me, but either way, 247 Sports rates him the #44 player nationally and Rivals rates him at #46.

Novi (MI) Catholic Central RB Wyatt Shallman
Shallman’s recruitment has been well documented here (a scouting report, for example).  Most experts believe he’ll be a Wolverine sooner or later.  Meanwhile, Shallman was recently named the 160th-best prospect in the country, according to Rivals.

Crete (IL) Crete-Monee WR Laquon Treadwell
Treadwell is a 6’3″, 183 lb. wideout whose teammate is former Michigan commit Anthony Standifer.  Treadwell had 75 catches for 1,400 yards and 18 touchdowns as a junior, and Michigan was the first school to offer him.  He has since earned offers from Ohio State and USC, along with several others.

Peoria (IL) Manual OT Logan Tuley-Tillman
Tuley-Tillman is a 6’7″, 280 lb. offensive tackle who mentioned several times that Michigan was a childhood favorite.  He has since been offered by Alabama (and many others) and recently stated that the Wolverines and Crimson Tide are neck-and-neck on top of his offer list.  He’s the #84 player overall to 247 Sports and #109 overall to Rivals.
