2019 Season Countdown: #99 Michael Sessa

Michael Sessa (#6, image via 247 Sports)

Name: Michael Sessa
Height: 6’8″
Weight: 211 lbs.
High school: Hinsdale (IL) Central
Position: Quarterback
Class: Redshirt junior
Jersey number: #6
Last year: I ranked Sessa #99 and said he would be a backup quarterback (LINK). He played one game against Rutgers.
TTB Rating: N/A

You can’t really appreciate the tallness of Michael Sessa until you see him around other Michigan football players. I mean, 6’8″ sounds really tall, but they’re football players, so they’re all big, right? But then you see videos of Michigan football players hanging out together, including a pretty gimongous Wilton Speight, and there’s a guy who towers even over him.

And that guy is Michael Sessa.

On the football side of things, Sessa took one snap against Rutgers last year. So there’s that.

Prediction: Backup quarterback

2018 Season Countdown: #96 Michael Sessa

Name: Michael Sessa
Height: 6’8″
Weight: 205 lbs.
High school: Hinsdale (IL) Central
Position: Quarterback
Class: Redshirt sophomore
Jersey number: #6
Last year: I ranked Sessa #94 and said he would be a backup quarterback. He did not see game action.

The story is largely the same in 2018 as it was in 2017 for Sessa. Sessa is the abnormally tall, skinny quarterback you saw hanging out with the rest of the quarterbacks in Amazon’s All or Nothing series. He will be a redshirt sophomore in the fall, and he will almost certainly be buried on the depth chart like he was last season. Wilton Speight, Alex Malzone, and John O’Korn have all departed and were ahead of him in the coaches’ eyes. Normally it’s a good thing when three people ahead of you are no longer on the roster, but they were replaced by Shea Patterson and Joe Milton, plus an additional year of weightlifting and experience for Dylan McCaffrey. Brandon Peters returns from last season, too, which means Sessa will be watching from the sidelines again this year.

Prediction: Backup quarterback

2017 Season Countdown: #94 Michael Sessa

Michael Sessa (image via Chicago Tribune)

Name: Michael Sessa
Height: 6’8″
Weight: 205 lbs.
High school: Hinsdale (IL) Central
Position: Quarterback
Class: Redshirt freshman
Jersey number: #6
Last year: I did not rank Sessa. He redshirted.

Michael Sessa is a name not many have heard, but he saw some extended playing time during the spring. Michigan’s top three quarterbacks are on campus, but with Alex Malzone reportedly heading out the door and Dylan McCaffrey still finishing up high school, there aren’t a ton of quarterbacks on Michigan’s roster. Sessa went to the same high school as tight end Ian Bunting and walked on to the program last fall.

Michigan only used three quarterbacks in 2016 (Wilton Speight, John O’Korn, and Shane Morris), and they only really needed to play Speight and O’Korn. Sessa probably won’t get much of a chance – if any – to play this fall, but he’ll help out with the scout team and might get some garbage time minutes.

Prediction: Backup quarterback
