Woodbridge (VA) Woodbridge defensive end Da’Shawn Hand

Joshua Alabi – DT – Detroit (MI) Cass Tech: Alabi is a 6’4″, 245 lb. defensive tackle prospect with an offer from Michigan.  He has visited Michigan numerous times this spring.

Kyle Berger – LB – Cleveland (OH) St. Ignatius: Berger recently picked up an offer from Arkansas, but the battle for his services appears to be between Michigan and Ohio State.  I put together a scouting report on him a few weeks ago.

Tommy Doles – C – Grand Rapids (MI) Christian: Doles is a 6’4″, 255 lb. center prospect with offers from Iowa State, Michigan, and Northwestern.  Many analysts believe it’s just a matter of time before Doles commits to the Wolverines.

Michael Ferns III – LB – St. Clairsville (OH) St. Clairsville: Ferns committed to Michigan last August.  He has since turned into a recruiting juggernaut for Michigan and has started sending out “Team 135” t-shirts to each of the other commits in the 2014 class.

Da’Shawn Hand – DE – Woodbridge (VA) Woodbridge: You probably know about Hand already – one of the top few football recruits in the nation.  I did a scouting report on him a few weeks ago.

Drake Harris – WR – Grand Rapids (MI) Christian: Harris has offers from all over the country.  He recently de-committed from Michigan State and has plans to visit Florida, Notre Dame, and other schools in the coming months.  This would be four weeks in a row he has made it to Michigan’s campus. UPDATE: Harris is no longer planning to visit.

Gary Hosey – LB – Detroit (MI) Cass Tech: Hosey is a 6’0″, 225 lb. prospect with offers from Ball State, Bowling Green, Eastern Michigan, Illinois, and Toledo.  Michigan appears to be looking for just two linebackers in this class – Michael Ferns III is already committed to play middle linebacker, and they need a SAM linebacker.  Hosey appears to be a long shot for a Michigan offer.

Malik McDowell – DE – Detroit (MI) Loyola: McDowell is a 6’7″, 290 lb. prospect with offers from all over the country.  The two major players appear to Michigan and Notre Dame.  I have read that McDowell’s parents aren’t letting him open his recruiting mail until the end of his junior year, so he can concentrate on school and avoid getting wrapped up in the recruiting circus.

Shane Morris – QB – Warren (MI) De La Salle: Morris has already signed with Michigan as part of the 2013 class.  Unable to enroll early, he is finishing out his senior year of high school.

Nic Weishar – TE – Chicago (IL) Marist: Weishar is a 6’5″, 225 lb. tight end with offers from Arkansas, Notre Dame, Ohio State, and Oklahoma, among others.  Notre Dame is considered to be the leader for his services.  He tore his labrum this past season, but should be fully recovered for his senior year.  I did a scouting report on Weishar a few weeks ago.

Chicago (IL) Marist tight end Nic Weishar

Joshua Alabi – DT – Detroit (MI) Cass Tech: Alabi is a 6’5″, 245 lb. defensive tackle prospect with offers from Michigan and Michigan State.  He’s a class of 2015 prospect along with running back Mikey Weber.  Alabi also visited Michigan last weekend.

Jayru Campbell – QB – Detroit (MI) Cass Tech: Campbell is a 6’3″, 190 lb. quarterback prospect.  He does not have an offer from Michigan, but he has been verbally offered by Alabama, Michigan State, and Notre Dame.  The Wolverines did not offer a 2014 quarterback until National Signing Day 2013, so it may be a while before we find out if Campbell meets Michigan’s standards. UPDATE: Campbell did not make it to campus.

Tommy Doles – C – Grand Rapids (MI) Christian: Doles is a 6’5″, 255 lb. interior line prospect.  He has offers from Iowa State, Michigan, and Northwestern.  He is teammates with wide receiver prospect Drake Harris and has visited Michigan numerous times.  There are some who think Doles will be Michigan’s next member of the 2014 class.

Jalen Embry – CB – Detroit (MI) King: Embry is a 5’11”, 180 lb. prospect with offers from Ball State, every direction of Michigan, and Toledo.  He’s a 3-star to 247 Sports and their #55 cornerback.  Embry attends the alma mater of rising sophomore running back/returner Dennis Norfleet.

Carl Fuller – LB – Detroit (MI) King: Fuller is a 6’3″, 195 lb. prospect with offers from Ball State, Eastern Michigan, Syracuse, and Toledo.  He looks like a future middle linebacker, and I think that might prevent Michigan from offering because the Wolverines already have another MIKE committed in the form of Michael Ferns III.  I think Fuller is a superior prospect to Embry, but the former might be more likely to get offered. UPDATE: Fuller is no longer visiting this weekend.

Drake Harris – WR – Grand Rapids (MI) Christian: Harris is a 6’4″, 180 lb. wideout with offers from Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, and numerous others.  He has recently hit it off with 2014 Michigan quarterback commit Wilton Speight, and this will be Harris’s third visit in as many weeks (for Michigan’s games against Penn State, Michigan State, and now Indiana).  He is “committed” to Michigan State because he originally intended to play basketball, too, but now he seems to be more interested in pursuing a football career.

Tyree Kinnel  – S – Huber Heights (OH) Wayne: Kinnel is a 6’0″, 190 lb. prospect with no offers at this time.  He had 55 tackles and 2 interceptions as a sophomore in 2012.  Kinnel also visited Michigan last October, but he attends the alma mater of Ohio State quarterback Braxton Miller as well as former Michigan players Terrence and Terry Talbott, both of whom left the program early (due to discipline and injury issues, respectively).

Lawrence Marshall – DE – Southfield (MI) Southfield: Marshall is a 6’4″, 215 lb. defensive end prospect whose most recent offers came from Mississippi, Mississippi State, and Oklahoma; he also has offers from Michigan, Michigan State, and Ohio State, along with several others.  Marshall has visited Michigan several times in recent weeks after being committed to Ohio State for about three days in February.

Malik McDowell – DE – Detroit (MI) Loyola: McDowell is a 6’7″, 290 lb. prospect with offers from Florida, Florida State, Michigan, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oregon, Penn State, Stanford, USC, and numerous others.  He projects to strongside defensive end in college.  The race appears to be between Michigan and Notre Dame right now.

Mikey Weber – RB – Detroit (MI) Cass Tech: Weber is a 5’10”, 190 lb. runner with offers from Illinois, Michigan, Michigan State, and Syracuse.  He had 1,700 yards and 21 touchdowns as a sophomore in 2012.

Nic Weishar – TE – Chicago (IL) Marist: Weishar is a 6’5″, 215 lb. tight end prospect with offers from Arkansas, Illinois, Missouri, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oklahoma, and Tennessee, along with several others. I wrote up a scouting report on him several weeks ago. UPDATE: Weishar will now be visiting next weekend.

Scouting Report: Nic Weishar

Chicago (IL) Marist tight end Nic Weishare (image via Chicago Tribune)

Name: Nic Weishar
Height: 6’5″
Weight: 215 lbs.
High school: Chicago (IL) Marist
Position: Tight end
Class: 2014

Notes: Holds offers from Boston College, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Purdue, Vanderbilt, and Wisconsin . . . As a junior in 2012, had 89 receptions for 1,100 yards and 5 touchdowns . . . As a sophomore in 2011, had 77 receptions for 1,160 yards and 13 touchdowns . . . 247 Sports 4-star TE, 90 grade, #6 TE, #231 overall

Strengths: Good frame to add weight . . . Catches ball with hands away from his body . . . Plays wide receiver in high school, which prepares him to play against more skilled players . . . Willing blocker in open field . . . Runs with good body lean . . . Keeps shoulders square when running after catch

Weaknesses: Lacks in-line blocking experience . . . Not an elite athlete . . . Lacks explosive speed and leaping ability . . . Not particularly elusive . . . Should break more tackles with his size advantage . . . Needs to use hands better to break press coverage

Projection: Tight end.  Weishar is a little bit stiff to split out wide in college, so he likely projects to Michigan’s Y-receiver spot rather than U-back.  He would obviously need to add some weight, and he would presumably require some technique work since he doesn’t play in a three-point stance.  He doesn’t show the athleticism to be a huge matchup problem, but he has the hands and size to be an effective receiver in the middle of the field.  He has the look of a future BCS-quality starter and could even develop into an all-conference player in the right system.

Recruiting Update: August 6, 2012

I just like this picture, so I’m posting it again in a slow news week.

There hasn’t been much news for Michigan since the BBQ at the Big House.  There haven’t been many new offers for 2014, except for Conor Sheehy.  It seems like the coaches want to evaluate the first few games of most kids’ junior seasons before offering them.

OFF THE BOARD
Geismar (LA) Dutchtown wide receiver Shelby Christy committed to Mississippi State.  Christy received a Michigan offer relatively recently compared to most of Michigan’s targets at the position, but there was never much buzz about him being interested in the Wolverines.

Louisville (KY) Trinity cornerback Ryan White changed his commitment from Louisville to Vanderbilt.  Trinity also boasts defensive end Jason Hatcher (USC) and wide receiver James Quick (undecided), both of whom were offered by Michigan.  White said academics was the main reason for the switch.

WEEKEND VISITOR
Monona Grove (WI) Monona Grove offensive guard Jaden Gault, a 2014 prospect, visited Michigan on Sunday.  He’s 6’6″ and 281 lbs. with offers from Michigan State, Nebraska, and Wisconsin.  He reminds me a little bit of Mark Huyge, although Huyge was a MAC-level prospect outside of his offer from Michigan.

Chicago (IL) Marist tight end Nic Weishar, a 2014 prospect, visited campus.  He’s a 6’5″, 200-pounder with offers from Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Notre Dame, and Wisconsin, among others.  As a sophomore in 2011, he had 77 receptions for 1,160 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Recruiting Update: June 4, 2012

Maurice Hurst, Jr.

COMMITMENT
Westwood (MA) Xaverian Brothers defensive tackle Maurice Hurst, Jr. committed to Michigan.

ADDED TO THE BOARD: 2013
Geismar (LA) Dutchtown wide receiver Shelby Christy was offered by Michigan recently.  Christy is a 6’3″, 175 lb. wideout with offers from Cincinnati, Georgia Tech, Minnesota, Mississippi, Mississippi State, and Northwestern.  As a junior in 2011, he had 25 receptions for 400+ yards and 7 touchdowns.  LSU hasn’t come forward with an offer yet, but if they do, expect him to be a Tiger.

ADDED TO THE BOARD:
2014
Hendersonville (TN) Beech athlete Jalen Hurd was offered by Michigan on Wednesday.  He also has offers from Alabama, Nebraska, Ohio State, Tennessee, and several others.  As a freshman in 2010, he had 57 carries for 459 yards and 3 touchdowns.  As a sophomore in 2011, he had 1,606 rushing yards and 437 receiving yards to go with 27 total touchdowns.  The 6’2″, 190-pounder could play running back or receiver, but I’m listing him as a running back because he’s built a little bit like 2013 running back target Ty Isaac.  Alabama looks like the early leader for Hurd, however.

Midlothian (IL) Marist tight end Nic Weishar was offered by Michigan.  Weishar is a 6’5″, 200 lb. wideout/tight end with offers from Illinois, Iowa, Notre Dame, Purdue, and Wisconsin, along with a few others.  As a junior in 2011, he had 77 receptions for 1,160 yards and 13 touchdowns.  (Highlights here.)

OFF THE BOARD
Lemont (IL) Lemont offensive tackle Ethan Pocic committed to LSU.  Back when Michigan filled up on offensive linemen, I was a little disappointed that they wouldn’t have room for Pocic, who was strongly considering Michigan up to that point.  Pocic was also considering Illinois (where his brother Graham plays) and Ohio State, so having him play in the SEC means Michigan has just a small chance of facing him at any point.  I think Pocic is going to be a very good player.

Fort Wayne (IN) Bishop Luers linebacker Jaylon Smith committed to Notre Dame.  Smith’s brother Rod is a running back for Ohio State, and it seemed from the beginning that this would be a Notre Dame vs. Ohio State battle; Smith never showed interest in going to Michigan.  On the camp circuit this spring, Smith has been consistently mentioned as one of the top performers, working out as a linebacker, defensive end, and even cornerback.  I’ll be curious to see how Notre Dame uses him, but hopefully he plays poorly against the Wolverines.

PENDING ANNOUNCEMENTS
Murrieta (CA) Vista Murrieta safety Su’a Cravens scheduled a college announcement for Wednesday, June 6th.  He stated several weeks ago that he would still take visits to a few Big Ten schools, including Michigan, but when a kid sets an early announcement date without having visited some of his “finalists,” the writing is probably on the wall.  In Cravens’s case, a lot of people are going to be eating crow if he doesn’t commit to USC.  In any case, here’s the scouting report I put together on Cravens.

Baltimore (MD) Gilman defensive tackle Henry Poggi has scheduled a college announcement for 10:00 this morning.  He will reportedly decide between Alabama and Michigan.  He has visited Michigan multiple times (for the Purdue game last year and in March), but his most recent visit was to Tuscaloosa.  Here’s the scouting report I put together on Poggi back in March.

WEEKEND VISITORS
There were a couple weekend visitors, including Hurst.  Cedar Falls (IA) Cedar Falls offensive tackle Ross Pierschbacher, a 2014 prospect, is going to visit Michigan today.  He’s a 6’5″, 275 lb. kid with offers from Iowa, Nebraska, and Wisconsin, but he doesn’t have a Michigan offer yet.  He was the offensive line MVP of the Illinois NFTC this past weekend.
