Recruiting Snapshot: Ohio State

Lewis Center (OH) Olentangy Orange DE Zach Harrison

2019 Ranking: #12 nationally. #3 in Big Ten. They have three 5-stars, seven 4-stars, and five 3-stars signed, along with one 4-star who’s a verbal commit.

Cream of the 2019 Crop: Lewis Center (OH) Olentangy Orange defensive end Zach Harrison made a late decision for the Buckeyes, picking the home-state team over Michigan and Penn State. Harrison is the #1 strongside end and #4 overall in the class. Austin (TX) Lake Travis wide receiver Garrett Wilson (#2 WR, #16 overall) and Buford (GA) Buford center Harry Miller (#2 C, #31 overall) are the other two 5-star commits. Michigan was never involved with Wilson, but the Wolverines appeared to be near the front for Miller before that recruitment went cold. Michigan had a shot, since 2018 freshman running back Christian Turner hailed from Buford, but it wasn’t meant to be.

2020 Ranking: #5 nationally. #1 in Big Ten. They have one 5-star and four 4-stars verbally committed.

Cream of the 2020 Crop: Cincinnati (OH) St. Xavier offensive tackle Paris Johnson, Jr. committed to the Buckeyes in June. He’s the #1 offensive tackle and #6 overall in the 2020 class.

Henry Gray – CB – Miami (FL) Central: Gray is a 5’11”, 172 lb. prospect who committed to Miami back in March. He’s a 4-star, the #5 cornerback, and #56 overall. There’s no indication that he’s intending to flip at this point.

Jordan Johnson – WR – St. Louis (MO) DeSmet: Johnson is a 6’2″, 180 lb. prospect with offers from Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Notre Dame, and Ohio State, among others. He’s a 4-star, the #8 wide receiver, and #50 overall.

Jutahn McClain – RB – Fairfield (OH) Fairfield: McClain is a 5’10”, 175-pounder with offers from Kentucky, Louisville, and Maryland, among others. He’s a 247 Sports 3-star, the #5 all-purpose back, and #649 overall. He scored 7 touchdowns in the season opener two weeks ago and is a teammate of 2019 Michigan tight end commit Erick All.

Mineral (VA) Louisa LB Brandon Smith

2019

Trente Jones – OT – Loganville (GA) Grayson: Jones is committed to Michigan (LINK).

Brandon Smith – LB – Mineral (VA) Louisa: Smith is a 6’5″, 215 lb. prospect with offers from virtually every big-time program in the country, including Michigan. He’s a 5-star, the #1 inside linebacker, and #19 overall. His visit is scheduled for April 3.

John Olmstead – OT – Metuchen (NJ) St. Joseph: Olmstead is a 6’6″, 290 lb. prospect with offers from Michigan, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Oregon, Penn State, and Rutgers, among others. He’s a 4-star, the #18 offensive tackle, and #168 overall. Right now 100% of the Crystal Ball picks are for Notre Dame.

Jack Stewart – OT – New Canaan (CT) New Canaan: Stewart is a 6’5″, 285 lb. prospect with offers from Arizona, Boston College, Michigan, and Texas A&M, among others. He’s a 3-star, the #84 offensive tackle, and #1001 overall.

2020

Paris Johnson, Jr. – OT – Cincinnati (OH) St. Xavier: Johnson is a 6’7″, 275 lb. prospect with offers from Alabama, Michigan, Notre Dame, and Ohio State, among others. He’s a 4-star, the #1 offensive tackle, and #7 overall in the 2020 class.

Trey Wedig – OT – Wales (WI) Kettle Moraine: Wedig is a 6’7″, 284-pounder with offers from Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin, among others. He’s a 247 Sports 4-star, the #22 offensive tackle, and #160 overall. Believe it or not, a Wisconsin offensive lineman is expected to pick . . . Wisconsin. It’s 100% right now. Wedig actually visited Michigan last weekend, but I wasn’t aware of it until afterward.

2019

Jahleel Billingsley – TE – Chicago (IL) Phillips: Billingsley is a 6’5″, 225 lb. prospect with offers from Florida, Michigan, Ohio State, and Penn State, among others. He’s a 4-star, the #9 tight end, and #260 overall. Right now 83% of his Crystal Ball picks are for Ohio State.

Jase Bowen – WR – Toledo (OH) Central Catholic: Bowen is a 6’1″, 178-pounder with offers from Kentucky, Minnesota, and Virginia, among others. He’s a 3-star, the #74 wide receiver, and #561 overall. He was previously committed to Notre Dame to play baseball.

Zach Charbonnet – RB – Westlake Village (CA) Oaks Christian: Charbonnet is a 6’2″, 215-pounder with offers from Florida, LSU, Michigan, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, UCLA, and USC, among others. He’s a 4-star, the #18 running back, and #275 overall.

Daequan Hardy – CB – Pittsburgh (PA) Penn Hills: Hardy is a 5’10”, 160 lb. prospect with offers from Michigan, a couple service academies, and a few MAC schools. He claims a 4.45 forty and a 38″ vertical. I don’t always tout the underrated guys, but I really think Hardy’s recruitment is going to take off. He’s a pretty electric player.

Zach Harrison – DE – Lewis Center (OH) Olentangy Orange: Harrison is a 6’6″, 240 lb. prospect with offers from Alabama, Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, and Penn State, among others. He’s a 5-star, the #2 weakside end, and #3 overall. All thirteen Crystal Ball picks have him going to Ohio State, which sounds about right. But at least Michigan is getting him on campus, so there’s a chance…

Will Harrod – OT – Fort Washington (MD) National Christian Academy: Harrod is a 6’5″, 305-pounder with offers from Maryland, Michigan, Ohio State, Oklahoma, and Oregon, among others. He’s a 4-star, the #21 offensive tackle, and #188 overall. There are eleven Crystal Ball predictions in for him, and every single one is in favor of Michigan; in fact, there are some who believe he will commit to the Wolverines during his trip.

ADDED TO THE BOARD: 2020

Hyattsville (MD) DeMatha offensive guard Golden Achumba was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’4″, 335 lb. prospect, and Michigan appears to be his first offer. He benches 335 lbs. and squats 430. DeMatha is a powerhouse, but Michigan has had a difficult time getting its foot in the door.

Lakeland (FL) Lakeland running back Demarkcus Bowman was offered by Michigan. He’s a 5’11”, 180 lb. prospect with offers from Alabama, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Miami, Ohio State, and Oregon, among others. Houston (TX) North Shore running back Zachary Evans was offered by Michigan. As a sophomore in 2017, he ran 184 times for 1,483 yards and 27 touchdowns. Evans is a little bit reminiscent of Dalvin Cook with his running style.
