Scouting Report: Jonathan Allen

Ashburn (VA) Stone Bridge defensive end Jonathan Allen

Name: Jonathan Allen
Height: 6’3″
Weight: 225 lbs.
Class: 2013
Position: Defensive end
School: Ashburn (VA) Stone Bridge

Notes: Holds offers from Boston College, Maryland, Michigan, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Oklahoma, Penn State, Rutgers, Stanford, Tennessee, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest . . . Had 12 sacks as a junior in 2011 . . . Rivals 4-star and #100 player nationally . . . 247 Sports 4-star, 96 grade, #1 WDE, #24 overall

Strengths: Can be explosive off the ball . . . Shows good straight-line speed

Weaknesses: Often stands up way too high coming off the ball . . . Does not use hands well to shed blockers . . . Does not change direction well . . . Lacks consistent effort in pursuit to ballcarrier . . . Takes poor angles when chasing from behind . . . Shows too much passivity when defending the run . . . Needs to finish tackles

Projection: Strongside defensive end in a 4-3.  Allen lacks the agility to play in space and does not display the one-on-one pass rushing ability to be a weakside end.  His best fit appears to be as a strongside end, but he’ll have to add significant size and strength to hold up.

Scouting Report: Jay Ellison

(image via 247 Sports)

Name: Jay Ellison
Height: 6’1″
Weight: 280 lbs.
Class: 2013
Position: Defensive tackle
School: Hamilton (GA) Harris County

Notes: Holds offers from Auburn, Georgia Tech, Michigan, Mississippi, South Carolina, and Tennessee . . . Auburn is his stated leader . . . Claims 5.21 time in forty yard dash . . . 4.68 time in the shuttle . . . 29″ vertical . . . Teammate of 2012 recruit Jordan Jenkins (committed to Georgia) . . . 4-star, #15 DT, #208 overall to 247 Sports

Strengths: Plays with good leverage most of the time . . . Uses hands well . . . At 6’1″ has ability to clog middle and hold his ground . . . Aggressive hitter and tackler . . . Powerful lower body . . . Runs fairly well for his size

Weaknesses: Seems to get off ball better as an offensive lineman, but too short to play offensive line . . . Not particularly quick off the ball . . . More of a clogger than a penetrator . . . Tends to hit rather than wrap up . . . Might slow down significantly once he adds another 20-30 pounds or so

Projection: Nose tackle.  Ellison seems to have a somewhat low ceiling due to his lack of height and explosion off the ball.  He has the ability to be a starting nose tackle in an elite conference like the SEC, Big Ten, etc., but without the ability to penetrate and make plays in the backfield, he likely won’t be a star at the next level.

Always keeps head on swivel, looking for another block downfield . . . Keeps a nice, wide base at all times . . . Uses hands well to engage defenders . . . Thick body with good frame to add weight

Weaknesses: Wants to play tackle, but may be a little short . . . Lacks the lateral foot speed to play tackle . . . Gets a little too high sometimes with his first step . . . Needs to improve upper body strength

Shows desire to gain yards after catch instead of settling for just catching ball . . . Runs with good body lean . . . Shows a variety of moves to get open . . . Slithery body control allows him to get off the line cleanly . . . No discernible body language or attitude concerns

Weaknesses: Needs to add a bit of weight to help with running after the catch and blocking . . . Will have to work a little on route running

Projection: Wide receiver.  Quick has excellent upside and could be an immediate impact kid at the next level.  His speed and elusiveness could make him effective in the slot or outside.  He could also be a kickoff or punt returner.

Reminds me of: Arkansas wide receiver/returner Joe Adams
