Visitors: December 13-15, 2013

Paramus (NJ) Catholic cornerback Jabrill Peppers

The following recruits will be visiting Michigan this coming weekend. It’s each player’s official visit, although several of them have visited campus numerous times.

Ian Bunting – TE – Hinsdale (IL) Central: Bunting committed to Michigan in April.

Juwann Bushell-Beatty – OT – Paramus (NJ) Catholic: Bushell-Beatty committed to Michigan in April. He just won his second straight New Jersey state championship.

Mason Cole – OG – Tarpon Springs (FL) East Lake: Cole committed to Michigan in February.

Shaun Crawford – CB – Lakewood (OH) St. Edward: Crawford committed to Michigan in August.

Vic Enwere – RB – Sugar Land (TX) Fort Bend Austin:
I did a scouting report on Enwere a couple weeks ago. He is currently a soft commit to Cal despite never having visited campus.

Michael Ferns – LB – St. Clairsville (OH) St. Clairsville: Ferns committed to Michigan in August 2012. UPDATE: Ferns is no longer visiting this weekend.

Noah Furbush – LB – Kenton (OH) Kenton: Furbush committed to Michigan in July.

Drake Harris – WR – Grand Rapids (MI) Christian: Harris committed to Michigan in April. He missed his entire senior season due to a hamstring injury.

Lawrence Marshall – DE – Southfield (MI) Southfield: Marshall committed to Michigan in May.

Brady Pallante – DT – Naples (FL) Barron Collier: Pallante committed to Michigan in April.

Jabrill Peppers – CB – Paramus (NJ) Catholic: Peppers committed to Michigan in May. He just won his fourth straight state championship in New Jersey.

Recruiting Update: November 28, 2013

Downers Grove (IL) South offensive tackle Erik Swenson

COMMITMENT
Downers Grove (IL) South offensive tackle Erik Swenson committed to Michigan.

ADDED TO THE BOARD: 2014
Sugar Land (TX) Fort Bend Austin running back Vic Enwere was offered by Michigan. He’s currently committed to the Cal Golden Bears – who are 1-10 – but will officially visit Michigan the weekend of December 13th. I wrote up a scouting report on Enwere last week.

ADDED TO THE BOARD: 2015Monaca (PA) Central Valley cornerback Jordan Whitehead was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’0″, 180 lb. prospect with offers from Ohio State, Penn State, Pitt, and West Virginia, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 4-star, #14 cornerback, and #155 overall. Most people expect him to become a Buckeye, but Alabama came in and stole elite wide receiver Robert Foster from the school in the 2013 class.

ADDED TO THE BOARD: 2016
Richmond (VA) Benedictine wide receiver Scott Bracey was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’3″, 195 lb. prospect with offers from Clemson, Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State, South Carolina, and Virginia Tech, along with several others. Bracey plays in the same league as 2014 Michigan quarterback commit Wilton Speight.

Pittsburgh (PA) Woodland Hills running back Miles Sanders was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’0″, 186 lb. prospect with offers from Pitt, Temple, and Toledo. In eight games as a sophomore this year, Sanders had over 1,000 yards rushing and 14 touchdowns. Also, his nickname is “Boobie.” If that seems confusing, you should read Friday Night Lights.

OFF THE BOARD
Woodbridge (VA) Senior defensive end Da’Shawn Hand committed to Alabama. Most prognosticators had him going to the Wolverines, but the combination of Michigan’s subpar season and his interest in Alabama’s engineering program led him to choose the Crimson Tide.

Berrien Springs (MI) Berrien Springs defensive end Jhonathon Williams flipped from Missouri to Notre Dame. Michigan offered Williams in the aftermath of Hand’s decision, and while he seemed briefly interested, he was more enamored with the Fighting Irish. Williams did not grow up in Michigan, so that somewhat mitigates the loss of an in-state prospect.

MISCELLANEOUS
Paramus (NJ) Catholic cornerback Jabrill Peppers announced this week that he will take visits after his high school season because of concerns about rumors that Brady Hoke will not return to Michigan next season. I am almost 100% sure that Hoke will return, no matter what happens in the next two games.

Here’s the most detailed visitors list in the blogosphere for The Game.

Scouting Report: Vic Enwere

Vic Enwere (image via Fort Bend Star)

Name: Vic Enwere
Height: 6’1″
Weight: 213 lbs.
High school: Sugar Land (TX) Fort Bend Austin
Position: Running back
Class: 2014

Notes: Holds offers from California, Colorado, Duke, Houston, Illinois, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Missouri, North Texas, Rice, SMU, Utah, Virginia, Wake Forest, and Wisconsin . . . Committed to Cal on June 17 . . . As a junior in 2012, had 210 carries for 1,509 yards and 16 touchdowns, plus 8 receptions for 140 yards . . . As a senior in 2013, currently has 2,266 yards and 32 touchdowns . . . ESPN 3-star, 78 grade, #58 RB . . . Rivals 3-star, #47 RB . . . Scout 3-star, #52 RB . . . 247 Sports 3-star, 85 grade, #65 RB

Strengths: Solid frame with good lower body strength . . . Keeps shoulders square to line of scrimmage and defenders . . . Difficult to bring down on first contact . . . Shows nice vision and patience to find the hole and cutback lanes . . . Displays good footwork in backfield . . . Carries ball high and tight . . . Protects ball in traffic . . . Shows nifty feet in the hole . . . Catches ball well on screens and flares

Weaknesses: Lacks any kind of breakaway speed . . . Not quick enough to elude third- and sometimes second-level defenders . . . Lacks burst to pull away after contact and cuts, allowing trailers to bring him down

Projection: Running back. Enwere looks like a college running back right now or maybe even the type of guy who turns into an inside linebacker with some added weight. He lacks the breakaway speed to be an elite running back at the college level, and while a lot of running backs aren’t faster than defensive backs, my biggest concern for Enwere’s future is he looks like he might be overmatched in the quickness department by a lot of college linebackers. He should be able to fight for extra yardage after contact, but he will probably be limited to running between the tackles. Enwere is the type of player who can be a solid backup because of how hard he runs, but if he’s your feature back, your offense is going to be limited.

Reminds me of: Max Martin

Likelihood of coming to Michigan: Enwere is currently committed to Cal but has expressed interest in visiting Michigan. Prior to the tender, he stated that he would not visit Michigan unless they offered. It’s tough to pull kids out of Texas, but the Wolverines are arguably the best offer he has.

Recruiting Update: April 16, 2013

East St. Louis (IL) East St. Louis linebacker Kyron Watson (#32)

COMMITMENT
Grand Rapids (MI) Christian wide receiver Drake Harris committed to Michigan.

ADDED TO THE BOARD: 2014
Sugar Land (TX) Fort Bend Austin running back Vic Enwere was offered by Michigan.  He’s a 6’0″, 210 lb. prospect with offers from Colorado, Houston, Michigan State, and Utah, along with a few others.  As a junior in 2012, he had 210 carries for 1,509 yards and 16 touchdowns.  According to the 247 Composite rankings, he’s a 3-star, the #55 running back, and the #723 player overall.  He’s a big back who I could easily see reaching 225-230 lbs., but he has a little bit of a herky jerky running motion and isn’t a very smooth athlete.

Kenton (OH) Kenton outside linebacker Noah Furbush was offered by Michigan.  He’s a 6’4″, 230 lb. prospect with offers from Bowling Green and Toledo, too.  Furbush’s offer came after a couple outside linebacker targets picked Ohio State, so Furbush appears to be a backup plan.  He’s not currently rated by any of the sites, and in my opinion, he looks more like a Brennen Beyer-style weakside end instead of an outside linebacker.  Kenton is the alma mater of former Michigan target Maty Mauk, a 2012 quarterback who’s now at Missouri.

Orange Park (FL) Oakleaf safety Darrion Owens was offered by Michigan.  He’s a 6’3″, 225 lb. player with offers from Kentucky, Louisville, Maryland, North Carolina State, South Florida, and West Virginia, among others.  In the 247 Composite rankings, he’s a 3-star, the #45 safety, and the #558 player overall.  As a junior in 2012, he had 101 tackles, 5 tackles for loss, 6 pass breakups, 2 interceptions, 1 forced fumble, and 1 fumble recovery.  He’s too thick and stiff to be a strong safety in college, in my opinion, but he does have some significant potential as an outside linebacker with his speed and vicious hitting ability.

East St. Louis (IL) East St. Louis linebacker Kyron Watson was offered by Michigan.  He’s a 6’1″, 220 lb. prospect with offers from Illinois, Michigan State, Missouri, Purdue, and TCU, among others.  As a junior in 2012, he had 142 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, 5 sacks, and 3 interceptions.  The offer was extended in the days after Sam Hubbard and Kyle Berger committed to Ohio State, but Watson does not appear to be a SAM prospect like them.  He’s a stout kid with the size and hitting ability of a middle linebacker, or perhaps a WILL.  This may indicate that the coaches are looking for a third linebacker in this class, when it was previously assumed that Michigan would look for just one more guy to pair with Michael Ferns III.

Clairton (PA) Thomas Jefferson outside linebacker Chase Winovich was offered by Michigan.  He stands 6’4″ and 215 lbs. with offers from Florida State, Miami, Northwestern, Ohio State, Pitt, Virginia Tech, and West Virginia, among others.  According to the 247 Composite rankings, he’s a 3-star, the #44 outside linebacker, and the #588 player overall.  Winovich has visited Michigan a couple times previously, but it has been presumed that Ohio State and Pitt, at the least, were ahead of the Wolverines.

Fort Lauderdale (FL) University School outside linebacker Richard Yeargin III was offered by Michigan.  He’s a 6’4″, 225 lb. prospect with offers from Arkansas, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, South Carolina, West Virginia, and Wisconsin, among others.  247’s Composite ranking places him as a 3-star, the #34 outside linebacker, and the #458 player overall.  He played at Hollywood (FL) Chaminade, the home of 2014 defensive tackle target Khairi Clark and a few 2012 targets, including QB Jerrard Randall (LSU), WR Curt Evans (Boston College), and safety Jonathan Aiken (Rutgers).  Now Yeargin is transferring to the University School, which Michigan previously targeted with 2013 WR Jordan Cunningham (Vanderbilt) and DT Maquedius Bain (LSU).

OFF THE BOARD
Houston (TX) Cypress Falls outside linebacker Otaro Alaka committed to Texas.  Alaka had not visited Michigan and was not expected to factor into his recruiting process.

Cleveland (OH) St. Ignatius outside linebacker Kyle Berger committed to Ohio State.  When Cincinnati (OH) Moeller outside linebacker Sam Hubbard committed to Ohio State last week, that was thought to have helped Michigan with Berger, since both play the same position and the Buckeyes have limited scholarships. However, Berger quickly made his decision to be a Buckeye before he truly ran out of chances, since players like Winovich are also high on Ohio State and play the same position.

Olney (MD) Good Counsel offensive guard Sam Mustipher committed to Notre Dame.  Mustipher had visited Michigan and was seriously considering the Wolverines, partly because of a friendship with the Countess family.

New Orleans (LA) St. Augustine cornerback Jermaine Roberts committed to Texas.  Roberts is a solid prospect, but the prize player from St. Augustine is running back Leonard Fournette, who has offers from just about every noteworthy school across the country.

Mansfield (TX) Timberview safety Brandon Simmons committed to Stanford.  He had a passing interest in the Wolverines, but he had not visited and was expected to stay out west.
