COMMITMENT

Leesburg (GA) Lee County defensive tackle Aubrey Solomon committed to Michigan (LINK).

ADDED TO THE BOARD: 2017

Peculiar (MO) Raymore-Peculiar defensive end Anthony Payne was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’3″, 250 lb. prospect with offers from Arkansas State, a few MAC schools, Tulane, and the like. He’s a 247 Sports 3-star, the #27 strongside end, and #697 overall. He worked out at Michigan’s satellite camp in Missouri, and the coaches liked what they saw. I can’t really blame them too much if his reported measurables are accurate: a 4.67 forty, a 405 lb. bench, a 635 lb. squat, and a 39″ vertical. However, his film isn’t anything special, and he looks like a guy who could get swallowed up by offensive tackles.

Darien (CT) Darien offensive tackle Andrew Stueber was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’6″, 285 lb. prospect with offers from Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, Pitt, Rutgers, and Tennessee, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 3-star, the #80 offensive tackle, and #774 overall. The nice thing about recruiting the New England area is that there’s not a strong pull to remain in the geographical area, since there aren’t any noteworthy programs there. On the flip side, one reason for the lack of noteworthy programs is a lack of talent (and competition for the talent that is there). Stueber’s film is fun to watch if you like to see an FBS-caliber tackle beating up on overmatched defenders, but he’s somewhat limited athletically and stands up too high.

Hit the jump for several commitments elsewhere, along with some random tidbits.

OFF THE BOARD

Ft. Lauderdale (FL) St. Thomas Aquinas defensive tackle Kivon Bennett committed to Tennessee. He earned a Michigan offer, but the staff never seemed to pursue him very hard and seemed content to recruit some of his teammates a bit more.

Starkville (MS) Starkville linebacker Willie Gay committed to Ole Miss. Gay had recently named Michigan to his top five, a list that included four SEC schools and Michigan. Then he trimmed it down to a final three before settling on the Rebels. It seems to me that Ole Miss should be getting hit with some sanctions here pretty soon, but I guess that doesn’t matter.

Covington (GA) Newton linebacker Jaquan Henderson committed to Tennessee. Henderson, a one-time UCLA commit, was a teammate of Michigan running back commit Kurt Taylor and one-time wide receiver commit Jeremiah Holloman. At one point it seemed like Henderson was all set to join them, but then Holloman decommitted and Michigan did not seem to make Henderson a priority, either. The Wolverines were tied atop the Crystal Ball picks (along with Tennessee) at 33%. The Volunteers pulled in nine commitments over the weekend, including Bennett and Henderson.

MISCELLANEY

Sugarcreek (OH) Garaway offensive tackle Joel Honigford named Michigan to his top four, which also includes Auburn, Michigan State, and Ohio State. The Buckeyes haven’t even offered, so that’s a pretty good sign that they’ll be the pick if they do step forward.

Gilbert (AZ) Highland tight end Tyler Johnson named Michigan to his top 14. Maybe being in the top fourteen of anything doesn’t sound extremely exciting, but Johnson is the #6 tight end in the 2017 class and plays almost like a wide receiver. I’m not holding out much hope, but he might be my top target at the tight end position in this class.

This is the list of players who have been offered on Michigan’s satellite camp tour (LINK).

The satellite camp schedule and participants list continues to grow (LINK).

Lol. Ok, Ok, I’ll admit it. Having spent my career … such that it was … as a poundee, I sort of enjoy watching someone else get pounded. In my defense, I have never claimed to be a nice person, just mostly honest.

I have to defer to you on the swallowed up thing, but watching Payne made me think of Chris Hutchinson in terms of his shape, movement and size. And of course CHRIS HUTCHINSON !!!!! I get that. But, this kid will be coming in at about the same size Hutchinson went out. Curiously, Hutchinson came in at 6’4″ 230 and then shrank/grew to 6’2 249 as a SR. Anyway, I’ll agree that 6’6″, 255 and twitchy is better.
