2018 Recruiting Update: January 30, 2018

Valdosta (GA) Lowndes athlete Michael Barrett

COMMITMENTS

Valdosta (GA) Lowndes running back/quarterback/linebacker Michael Barrett committed to Michigan (LINK). It sounds like Michigan wants him at Viper, where he has a similar frame to the guys who have played that position before him, namely Jabrill Peppers and Khaleke Hudson.

Rochester (MI) Adams cornerback Vincent Gray committed to Michigan (LINK).

Hit the jump for several guys who went off the board, along with some random bits.

ADDED TO THE BOARD: 2018

Washington (DC) H.D. Woodson cornerback Noah Boykin decommitted from Maryland. He’s a 4-star, the #34 cornerback, and #364 overall. He is now trending heavily toward Florida, which has 100% of his Crystal Ball picks right now.

OFF THE BOARD

Ramsey (NJ) St. Peter’s Prep defensive tackle Tyler Friday committed to Ohio State. This was a blow to Michigan’s recruiting class, since the Wolverines had been in pole position for most of his recruitment. He’s the #6 defensive tackle and #93 player overall.

Valdosta (GA) Lowndes offensive tackle Jalen Goss committed to Florida State. Michigan had a solid shot at Goss at one time, but when offensive line coach Greg Frey departed from Florida State and offered Goss a chance to be a Seminole, he jumped at the opportunity pretty quickly.

Los Angeles (CA) Hawkins wide receiver Jalen Hall committed to Oregon. He was considered to be a USC lock for a long time, so this was very unexpected from the beginning, though the Ducks had clearly made some headway before the commitment.

San Marcos (CA) Mission Hills wide receiver Chris Olave committed to Ohio State. Olave was considered by some to be a Michigan lean at one point after a late offer turned into a scheduled visit. However, his official visit in December was called off due to a reported family emergency, and he never ended up visiting Ann Arbor.

Las Vegas (NV) Arbor View defensive end Elijah Wade committed to UCLA. Unlike the three guys listed above, Michigan never really had a chance with this one.

MISCELLANEY

Rice grade transfer offensive tackle Calvin Anderson visited Michigan this past weekend (along with several other players). He’s supposedly down to Michigan and Texas, and while reports on the visit were positive, I have a hard time believing he’ll spurn his hometown Longhorns for the uncertainty of Michigan’s offensive line coaching situation.

Mission Hills (CA) Mission Hills cornerback Olaijah Griffin was supposed to visit Michigan one of the past two weekends, but he didn’t. And he has another visit elsewhere scheduled for next weekend. So if you were holding out any hope that he would pick Michigan, you probably shouldn’t.

Mission Viejo (CA) Mission Viejo offensive tackle Jarrett Patterson is expected to reach a decision sometime this week between Michigan, Notre Dame, and UCLA. There’s no clear favorite at this point.

If I’m Barrett, I’d probably want to play Viper at Michigan. But being me, I’d really prefer to see him juking guys out of their jocks.

I read somewhere that in an interview with Barrett’s father Michigan was persuing him as a viper.

So, while I wanted to see him as RB and with a wildcat mix, maybe we will get viper and wildcat. Could have been exciting with Peppers if the O coaches had been more imaginative and less predictable.
