Name: Luke Schoonmaker
Height: 6’6″
Weight: 229 lbs.
High school: Hamden (CT) Hamden Hall
Position: Tight end
Class: Freshman
Jersey number: N/A
Last year: Schoonmaker was a senior in high school (LINK). He caught 22 passes for 343 yards and 1 touchdown. He also ran 34 times for 306 yards and 1 touchdown, and he was 18/37 for 201 yards and 2 touchdowns passing.

Connecticut isn’t known for its football, and that’s why you find a 6’6″, 229 lb. guy playing both quarterback and tight end at his high school. Throughout his career at Hamden Hall, Schoonmaker was a guy who had to run the ball, throw the ball, and catch passes. He was actually much more productive as a junior, but he was not needed as much to play quarterback during his final season.

Schoonmaker will probably be good at Michigan because all tight ends at Michigan are good unless they fizzle out before they get to see the field. Michigan features tight ends, and this staff doesn’t recruit subpar athletes like, ahem, some other coaches have. But Schoonmaker isn’t a great blocker at this point, and he doesn’t have the size to be effective in that area right now. Furthermore, Michigan already has some good all-around tight ends and some good pass receivers at the position, so Schoonmaker should be able to redshirt. Once Zach Gentry and Sean McKeon matriculate after 2018 or 2019, that should open up the door for Schoonmaker to make a good impact on the field.

Prediction: Redshirt

Is it just me, or does Schoonmaker look like a guy who could get up to 260# (if not more) in a heartbeat? He appears to have a big frame. Not sure how much he has lifted, but his upper arms are pretty big for a high school kid of his dimensions.

I don’t really see that. He does have a good-sized frame, but I don’t think Michigan would want him to get that heavy. The other tight ends have all been between 240-250, really. Gentry is 244. I think Butt was 248. Those guys were 6’7″ and 6’6″, respectively.
