Notes: Claims a 5.23 forty, 4.79 shuttle, 24″ vertical, 270 lb. bench press, 430 lb. squat, 425 lb. deadlift, 275 lb. power clean…247 Composite 3-star, #36 OT, #12 in-state, #433 overall as of 2/27/19

Stats: N/A

Strengths: Aggressive blocker…Good first step…Good at identifying targets on the move…High-effort player…Nice frame to continue to grow and add strength

Weaknesses: Stops feet on contact too often…Needs to widen base when drive blocking…Plays too high…Needs to improve hand placement and initial punch in pass protection

Overall: Toutant is committed to Penn State, and he reminds me of a lot of Penn State linemen over the years. He has good size and adequate skills, but he’s limited athletically. His high school offense does not necessarily translate to college, so he will have to learn some different techniques in college, alter his stance, and clean up his footwork. One of the biggest issues he will have to correct is his tendency to play too high, which will cause him to get overpowered in college.

    “Weakness: Plays too high”

Two years ago I attended a high school game in West Virginia. The home town team (Braxton County) seemed really small in size. Their opponent that night had a clear size and height advantage across the line. My initial thought was Braxton was going to get beat, and beat badly. Then I watched a few plays from scrimmage, and what struck me was Braxton was playing low, and the other team’s line was playing almost standing straight up. Braxton got into the backfield play after play. Braxton ended up winning the game*.

I have to imagine “plays too high” is a common problem with high school players. A 6’8″ OT candidate who knows how to play low probably has offers from everyone.

    * Braxton won despite some of the field lights going out for part of the game. They had to play several possessions at the far end of the field, because the near end was in darkness.

You’re probably right that 6’8″ guys who can really bend have offers from everyone.

    Hello Thunder
I wanted to say, first of all, you were right about Eddie McDoom, and I was wrong. I haven’t been online commenting much for about 6 months. You had said McDoom wasn’t going to do much more at Michigan. and I had thought last season would be a good year for him. But he transferred out. Michigan didn’t use the WR much this past season. Maybe Eddie McDoom saw he was going to get very few chances, so he left. Whatever the cae, it turns out you were right about him.
I also wanted to say, I was glad to see you say this OLineman plays too high. I saw him too high on a regular basis, and I saw it wasn’t just me that thought he plays too high. I checked out in my mind on him. I thought I don’t want to see him at Michigan.

Well, I was wrong about McDoom in some sense, because when he came out of high school, I thought he was going to have a good career here at Michigan. Obviously, that did not prove to be true. But yeah, I saw the writing on the wall last year.

I wish he was still at Michigan and doing the things I hoped he would do when we got him as a recruit.

Well, none of the receivers have been used enough. I hope the talk that the WR is going to be used much more this season turns out to be true. The TE is vital, of course. But if Iowa wants to be TEU, then they can have it.
Michigan seems to be deep at WR. I’m hoping that not only the 3 big names are used much more, but I want to see a lot out of Oliver Martin and Michael Barrett this year. There’s too much WR talent at Michigan to go to waste.
I’m also curious about Cornelius Johnson. I like what I see on video of him.
