We are light at CB and DT.
Freshman class has CBs + DTs = 0.
I really hope we can get one transfer of each.

3 CBs over 2 classes (Seldon, Perry, Turner) is not enough. Expect some moves from WR.
2 DTs over 2 classes (Smith, Hinton) is not enough. Expect DEs to end up at DT (with Jenkins and Morris as candidates to follow the Kemp/Jeter/Wormley route).

Yep, ideally you should sign two true DTs (not DEs that you hope will beef up in 3-4 years) and 2 CBs in every class. And if you want to compete at anything near an elite level, at least one of each needs to be a stud.
What rankings of recruiting classes rarely take into account are balance, and the relative importance of different positions.

Agree with the second point. Look at how many 5 star RBs there are and how very few of them outproduce their backups on a per play basis.

On the first point – are you saying M should take 3-star DTs over 4-star DEs that could grow into a DT?
You need to login in order to vote
Well, there are DEs and DEs. If you’re talking about trying to grow a 4 star 240 lb DE into a DT, yes, I’d rather sign a 290 lb 3 star. If you’re talking about a 275 lb 4 star DE, that’s a more realistic transition. Sure, you expect most guys playing the lines to add weight and strength, but too much, and you may not be getting the same player you started with in terms of speed and agility. And there may be a stretch in there where they’re a tweener, and not that effective at either position.

Need to take more than 2 CBs IMO.

Is William Mohan still in the 2020 class?

I’m only counting 89 current scholarship players.
Also, didn’t Anthony Solomon burn his redshirt this year on special teams?

There are 90 there now. I counted Mohan with the freshmen but didn’t have him listed for whatever reason.
Yes, Solomon did burn his redshirt. I moved him. Thanks for catching that.

The thing that stands out to me is zero OL who didn’t redshirt. With six redshirt freshmen OL, I expect this to continue. May this be the new normal!

Still see gaps at DT & Corner, and – if you had to guess about upcoming attrition – that’s where it’s coming from
I’m hopeful we’re digging around the portal

Just FYI, Nate Schoenle is listed under Redshirt Seniors and Redshirt Junoirs. William Wagner is listed under Sophomores and under Redshirt Freshmen. Both are walk-ons, so doesn’t change the scholarship count.

I know how this story ends. 85

According to Michigan Athletics, Andrew Vastardis and Jess Speight have earned scholarships (Ctrl+f “scholarship to see):
https://mgoblue.com/sports/football/roster/andrew-vastardis/19087
https://mgoblue.com/sports/football/roster/jess-speight/19079
This would suggest we’re 2 over the scholarship limit

Scholarships given to walk-ons are generally one-year agreements. So while they did earn scholarships for the 2019-2020 year, they are not necessarily promised a scholarship going forward. Therefore, I usually don’t count those players when projecting to the next year, because those players will only be on scholarship if Michigan has fewer than 85 “true” scholarship players going into the season. Michigan almost always has 2-4 extra scholarships to give by August because kids transfer, don’t qualify, take a medical scholarship, etc.

Didn’t know that – thanks for that info. Hoping we hit on some of the DTs in the transfer portal

Does this confirm Warinner will be on scholarship?

I can see where that would have been confusing, but no, I listed him as a walk-on.

It didn’t occur to me before, but Schlissel’s decision to cancel the football season royally screwed over Nico Collins.
Schlissel is such a fucking scumbag.

So, we have 9 guys going out the door as seniors/redshirt seniors and 3 open slots for a total of 12.
We have 21 guys committed and a strong likelihood of two more guys coming in who are absolute takes, maybe 3.
I don’t think I see any redshirt juniors getting the firm handshake, particularly on the d line if the goal is to run 2 deep at every position. Maybe Honigford or Stueber, but I’m not feeling that either.
Unless I’m missing something, it looks to me like there’s gonna be some hurt feelings over grey shirt offers and such somewhere within our commitment list.

Good chance that scholarships get a bump up in 2021 to help manage the chaos of 2020.

Yeah, there’s a movement going around that scholarships will be preserved, just like they were in the spring. The question, of course, becomes whether schools/athletic departments can pay for a bunch of players sticking around for an extra year. Kind of a “You don’t have to go home, but you can’t stay here” situation where you get an extra year of eligibility…if you can find a school that will give you a spot.
