ADDED TO THE BOARD: 2021

La Jolla (CA) Bishop’s School quarterback Tyler Buchner was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’2″, 200-pounder who was already committed to Michigan for lacrosse, and now he has a football offer. UCLA has also offered him for football.

Monroeville (PA) Gateway running back Derrick Davis, Jr. was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’0″, 175-pounder with offers from Penn State, Pitt, and West Virginia. He grew up as an Alabama fan, and his dad played at Michigan State. So . . . I have a hard time seeing this go in Michigan’s direction.

West Lafayette (IN) West Lafayette linebacker Yanni Karlaftis was offered by Michigan. Karlaftis is a 6’3″, 205 lb. outside linebacker, and he’s the brother of 2019 defensive end George Karlaftis, a Purdue commit. If you’ve not familiar with the story of the Karlaftis family, it’s a very interesting – and sad – tale. They grew up in Athens, Greece, after their father got two degrees, an undergrad at Miami-FL and a Ph.D at Purdue. Their dad tragically passed away in 2014 after the family moved from Greece to West Lafayette, IN. Here’s a more in-depth article if you’re interested (LINK).

Daytona (FL) Warner Christian Academy cornerback Jacob Smith was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’0″, 170-punder with offers from Colorado, Tennessee, and Utah State. And that’s about all I know about him.

Dallas (TX) Parish Episcopal quarterback Preston Stone was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’2″, 185 lb. prospect with offers from TCU and Texas Tech, among others. As a freshman in 2017, he completed 201/339 passes for 2,937 yards, 29 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions; he also ran for 216 yards and 4 touchdowns. Here are some, uh, middle school highlights:

Orem (UT) Orem offensive tackle Kingsley Suamataia was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’5″, 285 lb. prospect with offers from BYU, Utah, and Utah State. Suamataia is related to the Ah You family, which has had football players play at various levels of college and NFL football.

MISCELLANEY

Laie (HI) Laie Park quarterback Sol-Jay Maiava is transferring to Washington (DC) St. John’s. He mentioned in his announcement that he thought St. John’s would offer a better pathway to a career in football, and it’s hard to argue with that. Maiava was the first quarterback Michigan offered in the 2021 class, and he’s a dual-threat prospect. He also has offers from Hawaii, Oregon, Utah, and Virginia.

Does Buchner have some Michigan connection beyond llacrosse? It makes no sense that he commit to Michigan lacrosse so early. We’re only a couple years removed from club status.

He is a very impressive freshman.
