8-1-17 Recruiting Update: The Color Purple

August 1, 2017

Shayne Simon

A note on programming: Today marks the beginning of football practice for our program, which means I’m going to be super-busy for the remainder of the fall. I will be continuing to post, but my responsibilities have expanded, so don’t be offended or dismayed if I’m not around quite as much.

COMMITMENTS

Louisville (KY) Trinity defensive end Stephen Herron, Jr., a 2019 prospect, committed to Michigan (LINK).

Indianapolis (IN) Lawrence Central linebacker Cameron McGrone committed to Michigan. I haven’t had time to write up a commitment post yet.

Hamden (CT) Hamden Hall tight end Luke Schoonmaker committed to Michigan (LINK).

OFF THE BOARD

Santa Ana (CA) Mater Dei offensive tackle Tommy Brown committed to Alabama. He plays on the line for 2019 quarterback J.T. Daniels, who visited Michigan this past weekend. At one time Brown was thought to be a Michigan lean.

Hit the jump for several other guys who went off the board.

Long Beach (CA) Poly quarterback Matt Corral committed to Florida. He transferred from Westlake Village (CA) Oaks Christian this offseason. Previously a USC commit, he reached out to Michigan, who gave him a bit of a tepid response. It’s rumored that Pep Hamilton was not very high on Corral.

Bradenton (FL) IMG Academy offensive guard Curtis Dunlap, Jr. committed to Florida. He had previously named Michigan to his top five.

Hattiesburg (MS) Hattiesburg running back Fabian Franklin committed to Mississippi State. Michigan had backed off recruiting him several months ago, and that’s probably at least partially because pulling a player out of Mississippi is like getting good pizza at Little Caesar’s – it just ain’t gonna happen.

Dayton (OH) Dunbar linebacker Antwuan Johnson, a former Michigan commit, pledged to Bowling Green State.

Manvel (TX) Manvel safety Jalen Preston committed to Texas A&M. Michigan was not very involved in his recruitment.

Fort Pierce (FL) Vero Beach linebacker David Reese committed to Florida. He was high on Michigan and visited earlier this summer. Now the Gators have two linebackers (including current sophomore and a former Michigan commit) named David Reese.

Jensen Beach (FL) Jensen Beach safety Jamien Sherwood committed to Auburn. A friend of Reese’s, it’s a bit surprising that the duo didn’t take a little longer and/or commit to the same school, though they weren’t necessarily a package deal.

Jersey City (NJ) St. Peter’s Prep safety/linebacker Shayne Simon committed to Notre Dame. Simon is/was a target for the Viper position, and I say is/was because Steve Lorenz insists that Michigan will keep recruiting him. Coming off of a 4-8 season, Brian Kelly’s seat is warm and the Wolverines might be able to flip him down the road.

Montgomery (AL) Park Crossing wide receiver Cam Taylor committed to Missouri. You may remember Taylor from the days when Michigan was building a pipeline to Prattville (AL) Prattville, back when Dytarious Johnson, Kingston Davis, and Keith Washington were all the rage. Johnson didn’t qualify, Davis transferred, and Washington is battling for a cornerback job. Taylor was at Prattville when he was offered, but has since transferred to Park Crossing.

St. Petersburg (FL) Admiral Farragut Academy linebacker Khalan Tolson committed to Illinois. Good for Lovie Smith.

Philadelphia (PA) Imhotep cornerback Isheem Young committed to Penn State. Young had previously named Michigan to his top 12, but he hadn’t shown much interest in the Wolverines lately.

Yeah, I’m coordinating, as well as having expanded responsibilities elsewhere. Life is crazy for me right now, which is why it’s taking me two days to put up commitment posts.

Maybe it’s sour grapes, as I really like Shane Simon, but given a choice of one, I’m taking McGrone.

Just a really nice downhill Lb prospect.

I don’t think you can really go wrong with either one. They’re both good prospects.
