This probably won’t be as regular of a thing as a normal high school recruiting update, but I think it might be helpful and informative to occasionally take a look at the transfer portal and any rumblings that might be emanating from said portal.
We are on the cusp of “free agency” in college football, where basically any player can transfer once and be eligible for his new team next fall. With Michigan having a lot of roster holes – and there will be more holes coming soon – I will discuss here some potentially viable options, or at least options that Michigan fans might find interesting.

CB Julian Barnett (Michigan State): Barnett was signed by Michigan State in the 2019 class, and while he was thought to be a corner, he filled a hole at wide receiver (13 catches for 182 yards). He then switched over to defense for 2020 and barely played. He made 3 tackles and returned 1 kickoff for 17 yards. Barnett is a good athlete, but he felt snubbed by Michigan when he was in high school. Furthermore, he went to Belleville (MI) Belleville, where Michigan has struggled to recruit in recent years. I would not expect either side to have a ton of interest, although if the divide could be bridged, Michigan needs help at corner. Barnett is listed at 6’2″ and 190 lbs. and was a 4-star, the #8 cornerback, and #57 overall coming out of high school.
OT Devontae Dobbs (Michigan State): Dobbs was a classmate of Barnett’s at Belleville and was a 4-star, the #1 offensive guard, and #51 overall. He was another one where Michigan did not seem to be in the mix coming out of high school, and while he was reportedly dealing with injury at times, his inability to get on the field over the past two seasons would be a little concerning.
LB TreShaun Hayward (Western Michigan): Hayward is a 6’1″, 235 lb. linebacker who was a part of the class of 2017. Originally from Ann Arbor (MI) Skyline, he developed into a 2nd team Sporting News All-American in the 2019 season. He was the MAC Defensive Player of the Year and notched 142 tackles, 10.5 tackles for loss, 5 sacks, 1 forced fumble, 1 fumble recovery, and 1 pass breakup. This year he had 58 tackles and 3 tackles for loss during WMU’s six-game season. Hayward is an inside linebacker, but as a fifth year senior in 2021, he wouldn’t really have a track to a starting spot unless Josh Ross or Cam McGrone leaves.
WR Dylan Wright (Texas A&M): The Wolverine’s E.J. Holland reported that Wright is transferring from TAMU and has interest in Michigan. The 6’4″, 210 lb. wideout has played in several games over the past two seasons, but he has yet to catch a pass. In the class of 2019, he was a 4-star, the #12 wide receiver, and #70 overall (roughly the same spot as 2020 signee Xavier Worthy). Unlike Worthy, Wright does not have very good speed and would be more of a big body receiver than a guy who can be a breakaway threat of any sort. He’s no Nico Collins.
