Transfer Portal Recruiting Update: December 18, 2020

This probably won’t be as regular of a thing as a normal high school recruiting update, but I think it might be helpful and informative to occasionally take a look at the transfer portal and any rumblings that might be emanating from said portal.

We are on the cusp of “free agency” in college football, where basically any player can transfer once and be eligible for his new team next fall. With Michigan having a lot of roster holes – and there will be more holes coming soon – I will discuss here some potentially viable options, or at least options that Michigan fans might find interesting.

The Fence the Mitten Project: Defensive Backs

Lavert Hill (image via Wolverines Wire)

I took a few days off from posting about this project, but it’s time to get back to it. So what would Michigan’s roster and recruiting look like if they signed the top 25 in-state prospects each year? Here’s the answer.

If you missed them earlier, there were posts about QB (LINK), RB (LINK), TE (LINK), OL (LINK), WR (LINK), DE (LINK), DT (LINK), and LB (LINK).

Hit the jump for the rundown of corners and safeties.

Preview of 2019 In-State Recruiting: #1-5

Logan Brown (image via The D Zone)

I’m going to do things a little bit differently for 2019 than I have before. I started off this series several years ago just listing the big-time prospects within the state, and then I tweaked that by doing my own rankings the last couple classes. While I prefer doing my own rankings, the truth is that I just don’t have the time at this juncture to watch the film and go through the process of ranking each player. Therefore, I’m just going to run through the top players in the 247 Composite with my analysis of their abilities and recruitment. I don’t think my own personal rankings generate enough buzz or eyeballs to warrant making that extra effort

1. Devontae Dobbs – OT – Belleville (MI) Belleville
Height: 6’4″
Weight: 270 lbs.
Notable offers: Alabama, Clemson, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State
Commitment: Uncommitted
247 Composite: 5-star, #1 OT, #9 overall
Analysis: Dobbs is athletic enough to play tackle at the next level, but the question with him is whether he will have the combination of length and bulk to play on the outside in college. It’s not impossible to succeed as a 6’4″ offensive tackle, but usually those guys are taller and longer. If tackle doesn’t work, he could be an excellent pulling guard because of his athleticism. But based on what I’ve seen, I think he’s ranked too highly at #9 overall.

Hit the jump for #2-5.

2019 Recruiting Update: January 23, 2018

Clinton Township (MI) Chippewa Valley LB Marcel Lewis (image via MLive)

ADDED TO THE BOARD: 2019

Belleville (MI) Belleville cornerback Julian Barnett, a Michigan State commit, was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’1″, 186-pounder who claims a 4.41 forty, along with offers from Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Georgia, Notre Dame, Ohio State, and Oregon, among others. Barnett could play corner or wide receiver at the next level. There has been much consternation from Michigan fans about why the Wolverines hadn’t offered earlier, and the pursuit has unfortunately begun after he committed to MSU in late December.

Lakeville (MN) North offensive tackle Bryce Benhart was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’7″, 285 lb. prospect with offers from Minnesota, Notre Dame, UCLA, and Wisconsin, among others. He’s a 3-star, the #43 offensive tackle, and #381 overall. The early expectation is that he will end up at Wisconsin.

Buford (GA) Buford running back Derrian Brown was offered by Michigan. He’s a 5’11”, 174 lb. prospect with offers from Auburn, Florida, Notre Dame, Ohio State, and Oregon, among others. He’s a 4-star, the #13 running back, and #143 overall. Brown is a teammate of 2018 Michigan signee Christian Turner, which is quite a one-two punch in the backfield.

Hit the jump for a bunch of other new offers.
