2019 Season Countdown: #67 Chuck Filiaga

Last year: I ranked Filiaga #83 and said he would be a backup offensive guard (LINK). He played in nine games, four at offensive tackle and six on special teams.

With Committapalooza temporarily paused until more commitments become public, let’s take a look at Chuck Filiaga. When he was recruited, I alerted Michigan fans that he did not represent a quick fix on the offensive line. Technique and body issues both threatened to delay his development, and that seems to be the case. Upperclassmen have a stranglehold on the starting gigs, and Filiaga is battling to be the primary backup guard.

Filiaga has not been mentioned as being in the mix at offensive tackle, and he’s typically the third backup interior guy mentioned, behind Stephen Spanellis and Joel Honigford. Filiaga is probably going to see playing time on the field goal/extra point unit as a huge body who will be tough to move, but on offense, he’s a huge body that finds itself tough to move. This will be an important year to glance at Filiaga’s future. If he’s the first or second guy off the bench on the interior, he might end up with a starting gig in 2020 after Ben Bredeson and Michael Onwenu graduate. If other guys move ahead of him, the writing might be on the wall.

Prediction: Backup offensive guard

Jeffrey Persi, Wolverine

San Juan Capistrano (CA) Junipero Serra offensive tackle Jeffrey Persi publicly committed to Michigan on Monday night, or Sunday morning if you’re on Eastern Standard Time. He picked the Wolverines over offers from Oklahoma, UCLA, and USC, among others.

Persi is listed at 6’7″ and 265 lbs. He claims a 5.36 forty, a 4.75 shuttle, and a 24″ vertical.

Eamonn Dennis, Wolverine

Worcester (MA) St. John’s running back/wide receiver Eamonn Dennis publicly committed to Michigan on Monday. He picked the Wolverines over offers from Duke, Iowa, and UMass, among others.

Dennis is listed at 5’10” and 173 lbs. He claims a 4.52 forty, a 4.33 shuttle, and a 40″ vertical.

Ex-Wolverine Update: Transfers, Summer 2019

In keeping track of players who used to play for Michigan, here’s what I think is a comprehensive rundown of former Wolverines who still have eligibility remaining and have been pursuing college football careers. There may be former walk-ons who have transferred elsewhere, but I track mainly scholarship players.

TRANSFERS

Brian Cole, S (Mississippi State): Cole is expected to start at nickel back for the Bulldogs.

Kekoa Crawford, WR (Cal): Crawford is in the two-deep for Cal, where he is expected to play mostly their Z receiver position.
