Preferred Walk-on Offers and Commitments for 2016

Tru Wilson 616x

Warren (MI) De La Salle running back/safety Tru Wilson

Michigan has picked up a few preferred walk-on commitments over the past few days. I have had requests to comment on some of these players, but I’m going to hold off for obvious reasons (National Signing Day is giving us plenty of news on which to write) and maybe not-so-obvious reasons (walk-ons sometimes disappear when they get late offers). I don’t want to spend a ton of time commenting on Tru Wilson, for example, if he decides to take a scholarship to Eastern Michigan between now and Wednesday.

Here are the walk-on offers and 14 commitments that I have gathered so far. Highlights and brief biographical information can be found by clicking on each player’s name:

QUARTERBACK
Commits (1):
Peter Bush – Newport Beach (CA) Corona del Mar
Other offers:
Miller Mosley – Mobile (AL) St. Paul’s; Michael Shuster – Camp Hill (PA) Camp HillHolden Thomas – Los Angeles (CA) Brentwood

Devery Hamilton, Ex-Wolverine

Devery Hamilton 612x
Baltimore (MD) Gilman offensive tackle Devery Hamilton flipped from Michigan to Stanford. Hamilton is a 4-star, the #22 offensive tackle, and #244 overall.

Hamilton committed to Michigan in June (LINK) and his offensive line teammate, Stephen Spanellis, flipped from Virginia to Michigan last week. Hamilton congratulated Spanellis on flipping to Michigan, but then left him in the dust for Palo Alto.

Westerville South wide receiver Jaelen Gill (20) races toward the endzone for a touchdown during the Wildcats' football game against Hilliard Bradley Sept. 26, 2014 at Hilliard Bradley High School in Hilliard, Ohio.

Westerville (OH) South RB Jaelen Gill

With the flurry of activity going on here near signing day, I didn’t think waiting until Monday would be a good idea unless I wanted to type one giant tome. So here’s your third recruiting update of the week.

COMMITMENTS
Plantation (FL) American Heritage tight end Nick Eubanks committed to Michigan (LINK).

McKeesport (PA) McKeesport safety Khaleke Hudson committed to Michigan (LINK).

Winter Garden (FL) West Orange wide receiver Eddie McDoom committed to Michigan (LINK).

Michigan has picked up a few preferred walk-on commitments in Michigan safety Tyler Cochran, Wisconsin tight end Conner Edmonds, Michigan tight end Daniel Jokisch, and Virginia offensive guard Andrew Vastardis.

DECOMMITMENT

Hit the jump for some new 2017 and 2018 offers, as well as some players who went off the board.

Brian Cole, Ex-Wolverine

Brian Cole 594x

Brian Cole

Rising sophomore safety Brian Cole has been released from Michigan’s football program. He played in three games this past fall, mustering 1 reception for -1 yard against Utah when he was still playing offense. Later in the year – after a stint in the doghouse and a move to safety – he started earning some hype with his play in practices.

Cole was from Saginaw (MI) Heritage as part of the 2015 class and was a jack of all trades for his high school team. He ran the ball, caught the ball, played safety, returned kicks, punted, etc. His athleticism was good enough that he was ranked as a 247 Composite 4-star, the #5 athlete, and #74 overall. That made him Michigan’s 38th-best recruit in the Rivals era (LINK), which is no small feat. He was an Under Armour All-American and enrolled early at Michigan last winter.

Hit the jump for more on Cole and the state of the roster.
