2016 Season Countdown: #32 Grant Perry

Grant Perry 208x

Name: Grant Perry
Height: 6’0″
Weight: 196 lbs.
High school: Bloomfield Hills (MI) Brother Rice
Position: Wide receiver
Class: Sophomore
Jersey number: #9
Last year: I ranked Perry #70 and said he would be a backup wide receiver (LINK). He caught 14 passes for 128 yards (9.1 yards/catch) and 1 touchdown.

From purely a numbers standpoint, I probably underrated Perry last year when I ranked him at #70. I predicted he would play and potentially be a possession guy, but he saw the field more than a lot of people expected, including me. However, he struggled early, as one would expect of a freshman. Thrown out there in the opener against a rabid Utah defense, Perry ran a couple routes incorrectly and ended up causing Jake Rudock to throw 2 interceptions (a third Rudock INT wasn’t Perry’s fault). It was an inauspicious debut, but the fact that he was on the field – and skipped over some older players – indicated how much the coaches believed in him. He saw a slight reduction of playing time until he got a better grasp on the offense, and he ended up fifth on the team in receptions. He capped the season with a Florida game that saw him make 5 catches for 51 yards and his first career touchdown.

Perry’s yards per catch were slightly lower than lumbering tight end A.J. Williams’ and slightly higher than lumbering running back De’Veon Smith’s, so the big-play ability is still a question mark. I maintain that he’s a possession slot guy rather than a dynamic slot guy, but you need both types of players. Perry’s playing time may not increase significantly this year, even with a year under his belt. The top two receivers return, and a handful of talented tight ends are itching to take over the spot left by Williams. On top of that, Michigan recruited several potential early-impact guys, including Kekoa Crawford, who is bigger, faster, and stronger than Perry. The coaching staff may not want to go through the same growing pains they had with Perry last year by sending out freshmen early in the year, and Perry’s time in the system will be to his advantage. His value lies in his reliability, though there are other guys with higher ceilings.

Prediction: Starting slot receiver; 20 catches, 190 yards, 2 touchdowns

2016 Season Countdown: #33 Patrick Kugler

Patrick Kugler (image via Bleacher Report)

Name: Patrick Kugler
Height: 6’5″
Weight: 303 lbs.
High school: Wexford (PA) North Allegheny
Position: Center
Class: Redshirt junior
Jersey number: #57
Last year: I ranked Kugler #29 and said he would be the backup center (LINK). He played in three games as a backup.

Entering his redshirt sophomore season last year, Kugler was suddenly thrust into a key backup role when Jack Miller ended his career prematurely. Luckily, Graham Glasgow stayed healthy and played well, so Kugler was not called upon in key situations to play on the offensive line. A frustrating shoulder injury has kept Kugler from adding strength and weight at times, and that lack of strength has been apparent over the past couple years when we have had a chance to see him. Along with too many mental mistakes, Kugler got pushed around quite a bit and struggled at the point of attack.

Seemingly to avoid putting Kugler on the field, the coaching staff has displaced junior left tackle Mason Cole to put him at center this year. Cole is already a two-year starter and will start somewhere this year, most likely at center. The coaching staff has kept alive the idea that Kugler could still win the spot, but it would take significant improvement over what we saw from him in the spring. I expect that Cole will keep the center spot, but left tackle Grant Newsome is the shakiest spot on the offensive line going into this season. If Newsome really struggles, it wouldn’t be out of the question to see Cole move back to left tackle with Kugler stepping in at center. The other problem is that Michigan doesn’t have anyone behind Kugler. Freshmen Ben Bredeson and Michael Onwenu talked about potentially playing center in college, but a true freshman center would be . . . less than ideal.

Prediction: Backup center

2017 Recruiting Update: August 10, 2016

James Hudson 206x

James Hudson III

Check out the message board for hype videos, some top lists, and Donald Trump (LINK).

COMMITMENT

Toledo (OH) Central Catholic defensive end James Hudson III committed to Michigan (LINK).

OFF THE BOARD

Miami (FL) Columbus cornerback Trajan Bandy committed to Miami. The presence of Mark Richt at Miami is clearly already making a difference. Bandy was a one-time Oklahoma commit who is now a Hurricane, and Richt also flipped former Georgia commit Deejay Dallas.

Los Angeles (CA) Cathedral defensive end Hunter Echols committed to USC. Echols was a UCLA commit not long ago, and while he showed some passing interest in his Michigan offer, I don’t think he wants to leave the west coast.

Hit the jump for several commitments elsewhere.

2016 Season Countdown: #34 Ty Isaac

Ty Isaac

Name: Ty Isaac
Height: 6’3″
Weight: 230 lbs.
High school: Joliet (IL) Catholic
Position: Running back
Class: Redshirt junior
Jersey number: #32
Last year: I ranked Isaac #33 and said he would be a backup running back with 600 yards and 7 touchdowns (LINK). He ran the ball 30 times for 205 yards (6.8 yards/carry) and 1 touchdown.

Isaac had the beginnings of a very solid year last season, and then it all came crashing down. In a battle for the #2 running back position – with a chance to take some snaps from De’Veon Smith, too – Isaac had 6 carries for 35 yards against Oregon State and then followed that up with what seemed like a breakout game. UNLV is UNLV, but Isaac ran 8 times for 114 yards (14.2 yards/carry) against the Runnin’ Rebels, including a 76-yard touchdown. Then he only got 2 carries against BYU. However, Smith hurt his ankle in that game, so Jim Harbaugh gave Isaac the start in the following game against Maryland. Isaac responded by fumbling twice in just 6 carries before being benched for the rest of the game. He would only get 4 more carries for the rest of the year, despite reports that he was taking first-team reps during the week of the Ohio State game and in preparation for the bowl game against Florida.
