Redshirt freshman tight end Mustapha Muhammad announced on Twitter that he was entering the transfer portal.

Muhammad was a part of the 2018 recruiting class. He was a 4-star, the #6 tight end, and #168 overall. He did not play a down in 2018, and he has played in two games so far in 2019. It seems he had stagnated on the depth chart behind starter Sean McKeon and backups Nick Eubanks, Erick All, and Luke Schoonmaker, all of whom had played significant minutes this year. Schoonmaker made his first touchdown catch on Saturday, and that may have been the dagger for Muhammad to see 3-star, nondescript Schoonmaker make an impact first.

Hit the jump for more.

I gave Muhammad a TTB Rating of 79 (LINK), which is a decent number, but I rated him lower than Schoonmaker. I had a dude chew me out on Twitter regarding Muhammad’s rating, but I just didn’t see the athleticism and receiving instincts to be a real difference-maker at the tight end position. He seems to have more potential as a blocking tight end.

Without Muhammad on the roster, Michigan’s tight end position going forward will consist of the following scholarship players:

  • Sean McKeon (Sr.)
  • Nick Eubanks (RS Jr.)
  • Luke Schoonmaker (RS Fr.)
  • Erick All (Fr.)
  • Matt Hibner (2020 commit)
  • Nick Patterson (2020 commit)

Here’s the 2019 scholarship count without Muhammad (LINK). Muhammad is the second member of the 2018 class to transfer, joining cornerback Myles Sims (Georgia Tech).

Sucks to lose a highly rated player, in a low rated class, but losing our 5th(?) Tight End is not a big deal. None of Mckeon, Eubanks, All, or Schoonmaker are studs, and none contribute to the “Speed in Space” promised by Gattis

If Muhammad couldn’t see the field while Harbaugh still insists on getting TEs out there, this is actually opening up another scholarship for us. Let’s just hope we don’t chase another TE…

    Good luck, young man
