Poll results: What will Michigan’s regular season record be in 2016?

September 29, 2016

1% of you voted for 6-6 or worse?!?!?!

Just before the season began, I posted a poll about Michigan’s regular season record in 2016. How would the season go for the Wolverines? I left the poll up for the first 4.5 weeks of the regular season, so that gives some more recent voters the advantage of watching the Wolverines beat up on the first four opponents. Anyone who expects Michigan to go 2-6 or worse down the stretch is either really pessimistic or . . . a spy!

Here are the results of the poll:

11-1 record: 43%

12-0 record: 28%

10-2 record: 24%

9-3 record: 4%

6-6 or worse record: 1%

8-4 record: 0% (5 votes)

7-5 record: 0% (2 votes)

Yours truly picked an 11-1 record, and I stand by that claim. For now, at least. What say the rest of you?

I’m going to go 12-0, as hard as that is to accomplish….. I think we’re the most talented team on the field every week, until that last game…. that one is a toss up. They have a very young team that is gaining experience every week, are as well. As long as we don’t have major injury loss by then, I think our special teams (mostly punt/kick return threat) can tip the balance in that game.

We have a lot of young players playing, but we’re not a very young team.

      Offensive Starters (8 returning starters)
      5 fifth year players
      3 fourth year players
      2 third year players
      1 second year player (Newsome)

      Defensive Starters (9 returning starters)
      2 5th year players
      8 4th year players
      1 third year player

That’s not a very young team, with only 3 players in their third year, and 1 in their second.

There are a lot of young players rotating in, but overall it’s not a very young team.

OSU has a younger, inexperienced team, but it’s still not that young, and it is that inexperienced.

      Offensive Starters
      2 fifth year players
      3 fourth year players
      3 third year players
      2 second year players
      1 first year player

      Defensive Starters
      0 fifth year players
      4 fourth year players
      6 third year players
      1 second year player

That is a rather young team, with 9 players in their third year, 3 in their second, and 1 in their first.

I was a little surprised by the 28% 12 – 0 vote, but enthusiasm doesn’t cost anything so go for it!

In my case the away schedule of Iowa, MSU and OSU and now add a tough Whisky at home and I came up with 10 – 2. I really want to beat at least one of our rivals especially MSU for instate bragging rights, if not both. If we can stay healthy I think we can do better than .500 against these four opponents so I wouldn’t mind being wrong in a positive direction for sure.

Not too much has changed since the preseason, but I think our prospects look a little better for @Iowa and @MSU than they did a month ago. Perhaps that’s offset by Wisconsin looking tougher but this is a game where Michigan is still heavily favored to win (line over 10 points).

Big picture takeaways thusfar. The bad news:
      1. Maybe the OL hasn’t quite progressed as much as we might have hoped.
      2. Clark’s injury makes secondary depth an issue if any more injury’s hit.
      3. Speight isn’t anywhere near late-season Rudock

      The good news:
      1. The DL is as good as advertised.
      2. The LBs look better than advertised.
      3. Peppers, Gary, Stribling look as good as their hype.
      4. The turnover at FB and TE appears to be a non-issue on offense.

This Wisconsin game is interesting in it’s own right but should tell us a lot about how well this team matches up against MSU and Iowa. If we crush Wisconsin we will be not only favored, but heavily, in every game through to OSU.

11-1 into OSU, and I have them leaving that s—hole with a victory.

Dumb as this sounds, the game that worries me is Maryland. That one there is practically the definition for “trap game”.

I highly doubt it. They also played UCF, they needed OT to win. They haven’t lost yet, and we’ll see what they’re made of before we play them.
