Getting to know: Juwann Bushell-Beatty

Juwann Bushell-Beatty is no
stranger to success. He anchored an offensive line that helped lead Paramus
(NJ) Catholic to a 10-2 record and a New Jersey non-public, Group 4 state title.
Following the season, Juwann flew up the recruiting boards, garnering three- and
four-star ratings from the major recruiting services.  Juwann was offered in February and committed
to the Wolverines shortly after his early April visit to Ann Arbor. Despite the
instant success and busy offseason he stays humbled by the experience. “Me
personally I am very grateful to be where I am at right now. Not many people
can say they have done all this in such a short period of time. I can say I’m
blessed to be where I am at.”

Being
blessed certainly doesn’t mean being comfortable. Speaking with Juwann he was adamant
about the work that he still needs to do before he arrives on the Michigan
campus in over a year from now. “I really don’t have one aspect of my game I need
to improve; I would say my game in a whole. Last year I was satisfied because
it was my first year really starting.  Then
I went back and looked at the tape a couple of months later, and I wasn’t really
that impressed with myself.  There is a
lot I need to work on so I can play at that second level. I need to bring
everything I have to the table so I can get on the field sooner.  I want to improve my all around game, run
blocking, pass blocking, how low I come off the ball, quickness of my feet and
stuff like that.  That is just a small
part of it in becoming a better all around player.” He doesn’t only have the
mindset, but the work ethic is there to match it and an understanding of how he
can translate his game to the next level. “I really like the explosive aspect,
working on speed training and that’s one thing I feel I need to work on the
most. As a college offensive lineman you need to be explosive. That’s a major
thing we work on and something I take very seriously.”

The
honesty of the Michigan coaching staff and the academic integrity of the school
were two of the major factors that stood out on the unofficial visit. “When I
got up there I had a real good time. What I was really looking for was the
academic aspect of a school, and Michigan had that.  I really liked the coaches and the players;
they are a high intensity team, there was just a lot of really interesting
things. I think Coach Hoke is a great guy, I love him, and he is really down to Earth. I got a chance to really see what he was about and what he believed in
when I was out there.” Along with coach Hoke, there seemed to be a good
connection with offensive line coach Darrell Funk and the unprecedented tradition
of Michigan offensive linemen. “It shows you what they produce, all of the
great players that have come through there. I see that aspect in myself one
day. I got a chance to talk to Coach Funk. He is a great guy and I really like
the way he coaches. They always have great O-lineman coming out of there, and
that is something I wanted and something I know the coaches can provide for me.”

With Juwann
and the recent commitment of teammate Jabrill Peppers, it seems like Michigan’s
New Jersey pipeline is growing. With Rutgers joining the Big 10, a chance to
play back in their home state may be an added advantage. “It’s going to be real
exciting, going to be back home after being away for a little while.  It will be Rutgers first year in and I will
be able to have all my family there, so that will be exciting.”

Being the eighth
commitment of the class of 2014, I asked Juwann if he will be joining the likes
of Michael Ferns and Wilton Speight in recruiting others to the class and
handing out team 135 T-Shirts.  He was
pretty clear that a school like Michigan recruits itself. “At the end of the
day it’s always going to come down to their opinion. What I would say if you’re
looking for real down to Earth coaches, who are going to give it to you the
right way, and show you what you need to know to develop you into a great
player, then that’s where you want to be. The players are great guys, real hard
workers, just like the coaches. If you are looking for a place like that, then
Michigan is where you want to be.”  And
Michigan is where Juwann will be, but not before a senior season in which he
will look to repeat another state title and embrace the opportunity to play
some national high school powerhouses. “It’s really great, coming from where
this program was a few years ago, and how fast Coach Partridge and all the
other coaches got us to where we are at. This year coming up, I’d say I am most
excited about the first game of the season against [Baltimore (MD) Gilman, Henry Poggi’s alma mater], they are going
to be a couple weeks in already and we will be coming fresh out of camp. We get
to play a lot of big talent around the country, and see what is out there.”
One
constant through last season Juwann says, “Wearing my team issued game day Under Armour each week.” I would say with the success of this past year and the
promise of things to come … don’t change that shirt.

Recruiting Update: June 3, 2013

Long Beach (CA) Poly cornerback Iman Marshall

COMMITMENT
Clairton (PA) Thomas Jefferson linebacker Chase Winovich committed to Michigan.

ADDED TO THE BOARD: 2015
Long Beach (CA) Poly cornerback Iman Marshall was offered by Michigan. Marshall is a 6’1″, 186 lb. prospect with offers from Cal, Florida State, Notre Dame, UCLA, and USC, among others. He’s also teammates with 2014 wide receiver/safety offeree John “Juju” Smith and attends the alma mater of former Michigan cornerback Donovan Warren.  USC is the presumed leader for Marshall, however. He is currently a 4-star, the #5 cornerback, and the #50 overall player to 247 Sports.

OFF THE BOARD
Bamberg (SC) Bamberg-Erhardt tight end Kevin Crosby committed to South Carolina.  Crosby never visited Michigan and did not plan to.  Michigan has recruited several kids out of Bamberg-Erhardt in recent years, but so far they’ve been striking out.

Cleveland (OH) Shaker Heights defensive end Joe Henderson committed to Tennessee. His offer was reported several months ago, but it was always questioned whether he was actually offered.  The Wolverines appeared not to have been pursuing him too hard in the intervening months, however.

Tyrone (GA) Sandy Creek wide receiver Demarre Kitt committed to Clemson.  He never visited Michigan and did not appear particularly interested in doing so at any point.

MISCELLANEOUS
Last week’s scouting report was on Peyton (CO) Falcon athlete Kalen Ballage.

Chase Winovich, Wolverine

Michigan commits Michael Ferns III and Chase Winovich

Clairton (PA) Thomas Jefferson outside linebacker Chase Winovich committed to Michigan on Saturday.  He chose the Wolverines over offers from Arizona, Arkansas, Florida State, Illinois, Michigan State, Northwestern, Ohio State, Pitt, Stanford, Virginia Tech, and West Virginia, among others.

I wrote a scouting report on Winovich in mid-May, so you might want to check that out for comments on his play.

The other two finalists for him were Pitt and Ohio State, in that order. Michigan was the last of that trio to offer, but he made a few trips to Ann Arbor and felt more comfortable there. His older brother Peter was a quarterback-turned-fullback at Bowling Green from 2004-08.

Winovich was recruited by Michigan for the SAM outside linebacker position, which he fits pretty well at approximately 6’4″, 215 lbs.  He’ll have to add bulk, obviously, but he has good length and skills for the position.  Friend and fellow 2014 commit Michael Ferns III was recruited to play middle linebacker, but he also has the size and skill set to play SAM down the road if needed.

When Winovich arrives on campus, Cameron Gordon will have graduated, Jake Ryan will be a redshirt senior, and Mike McCray II will be a sophomore.  McCray’s size and skills for the SAM are in question, too, so there might be an opportunity to surpass him or bump him over to MIKE.

Michigan is now up to eleven commitments for the class of 2014, a class that should reach 16 or more.  They could settle with two linebackers, but they could also take the “best available” guy at any of the three positions, such as Junipero (CA) Gardena Serra’s Dwight Williams or Orange Park (FL) Oakleaf’s Darrion Owens.  With depth and competition somewhat thin at SAM, I would like to see the coaches continue to pursue Owens; Williams, who would play WILL, would just be a luxury at this point.

I’ll be interested to see how Winovich performs as a senior once he has presumably added a few pounds, but for now I’ll give him a TTB Rating of . . .

TTB Rating: 79 (ratings explanation)

Scouting Report: Kalen Ballage

Peyton (CO) Falcon athlete Kalen Ballage

Name: Kalen Ballage
Height: 6’2″
Weight: 215 lbs.
High school: Peyton (CO) Falcon
Position: Running back, wide receiver, linebacker
Class: 2014

Notes: Holds offers from Arizona State, Boise State, Colorado, Colorado State, Georgia Tech, Iowa, Kansas State, Michigan, Michigan State, Mississippi State, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Oregon State, Tulsa, Utah, Vanderbilt, Washington State, and Wyoming . . . Claims a 4.37 forty . . . Benches 370 lbs. . . . Squats 485 lbs. . . . Scored 21 offensive touchdowns and made 45 tackles as a junior in 2012 . . . Unranked on ESPN . . . Rivals 4-star, #6 ATH, #136 overall . . . Scout 3-star, #32 RB . . . 247 Sports 4-star, 90 grade, #30 ATH

Strengths: Very good speed . . . Excellent running form in open field . . . Opponents will have difficulty chasing him down from behind . . . Nice change of direction skills . . . Can swivel hips with ball in hand to get skinny and break tackles while keeping shoulders square . . . Catches ball with hands away from his body . . . Shows very good recovery speed on defense to chase plays from behind

Weaknesses: Mediocre vision . . . Occasionally misses cutback lanes . . . Carries the ball loosely away from body . . . Could have turnover issues in traffic . . . Not the smoothest pass catcher and does not snatch ball out of the air . . . Does not show great defensive instincts . . . Waits for ball carriers to come to him instead of attacking . . . Not an aggressive tackler . . . Prefers to drag down or gator roll players to ground rather than driving through ball carriers

Projection: Running back.  Ballage is ranked as an athlete, and some people have suggested that he could play outside linebacker in college.  However, I think he lacks the instincts and physicality to play linebacker at the next level.  He looks like an offensive player, most likely a running back, but perhaps a wideout if he works a little more on his catching skills.  He does not seem to be a particularly physical runner, but he’s big and strong enough to break arm tackles; if he gets into the open field, he could be very dangerous.

Reminds me of: Carlos Brown

Likelihood of committing to Michigan: Ballage has expressed fairly strong interest in Michigan, but he seems to be pretty wide open right now. The in-state schools don’t seem to be much of a threat, but he’s high on schools like Arizona State, Nebraska, and Oregon, the last of which has not offered yet.  It looks to be a long road between now and a commitment.

Recruiting Update: May 27, 2013

Bellflower (CA) St. John Bosco quarterback Josh Rosen

COMMITMENT
Paramus (NJ) Catholic cornerback Jabrill Peppers committed to Michigan.

ADDED TO THE BOARD: 2014
Jacksonville (FL) Raines cornerback Lamont Simmons was offered by Michigan. Simmons is a 6’2″, 185 lb. corner with offers from Arkansas, Georgia, and Wisconsin, among others.  I can’t find much information about him, so feel free to comment with any insight you can.

ADDED TO THE BOARD: 2015
Bamberg (SC) Erhardt defensive end LaSamuel Davis was offered by Michigan.  He’s a 6’4″, 205 lb. prospect with offers from Arizona, Arizona State, UCLA, and USC, among others.  Michigan has pursued several guys out of Erhardt in recent years (2014 ATH Kevin Crosby, 2012 DE Martin Aiken, 2011 RB Demetrius Williams), but so far the pursuit has been unsuccessful.

Jacksonville (FL) Trinity Christian linebacker Jeff Holland has been offered by Michigan.  He’s a 6’2″, 230 lb. prospect with offers from Alabama, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Ohio State, and lots of others.  According to 247 Sports – the only service to release rankings for 2015 prospects – Holland is the #17 overall player and #1 linebacker in the nation.  Michigan also recruited 2011 RB Andrew Buie (West Virginia) and 2010 S Rashad Knight (Rutgers) out of Trinity Christian, but those offers were from the Rich Rodriguez era.

Bellflower (CA) St. John Bosco quarterback Josh Rosen was offered by Michigan.  Rosen is a 6’4″, 200 lb. passer who claims a 4.55 forty.  As a sophomore in 2012, he had 2,087 passing yards, 22 touchdowns, 8 interceptions, and 352 rushing yards, which has earned him offers from Oregon State, Tennessee, and a few other schools so far.  247 Sports has ranked him as the #2 pro-style quarterback and the #5 overall player in the nation.  He is thought to favor some West Coast, Pac-12 schools, so Michigan will be in an uphill battle to capture his commitment.  That may be the reason why the Wolverines went ahead and offered him, despite the fact that they offered 2014 quarterback commit Wilton Speight on National Signing Day 2013.  Previously, La Mirada (CA) La Mirada’s Kevin Dillman was presumed to be Michigan’s top target at the position, and he may well be offered if Rosen ends up committing to Cal or Stanford.

Jacksonville (FL) Trinity Christian cornerback Kevin Toliver II was also offered by Michigan.  The teammate of Holland, he’s a 6’2″, 183 lb. prospect with offers from Alabama, Florida, Florida State, and lots of others . . . including LSU, to which he’s already committed.  247 Sports ranks him as the #1 cornerback and #33 overall player in the country.

Dallas (TX) Skyline linebacker Anthony Wheeler was offered by Michigan.  He’s a 6’2″, 225 lb. prospect with offers from Michigan State, Texas, and Texas Tech, among others.  Texas is thought to be the leader, although he’s giving other schools a chance.  I believe Wheeler will end up as a weakside end because he’s a little too stiff and slow to play linebacker at the next level.

ADDED TO THE BOARD: 2016
Fort Lauderdale (FL) University School wide receiver Sam Bruce was offered by Michigan.  He’s a 5’8″, 160 lb. prospect with offers from Arkansas, Clemson, and USC, among others.  His uncle is former St. Louis Rams wide receiver Isaac Bruce, who played his college ball at Memphis State; I think it’s safe to say that Sam won’t be following in his uncle’s footsteps when it comes to picking a college.  Michigan has really hit the University School hard with offers lately, going after 2013 WR Jordan Cunningham (Vanderbilt) and DT Maquedius Bain (LSU).  Bruce is a speedy pinball of a player who could end up as a wideout, corner, nickel corner, or returner at the next level.

Downers Grove (IL) South offensive tackle Erik Swenson was offered by Michigan.  Swenson was on my 2016 list for a long time, but I removed him several weeks ago because there was some question about whether his offer was “official” or not (even though officially official offers can’t be extended until the August prior to his senior year).  Now his unofficially official offer has been confirmed, so I’m adding him to the list again.  Swenson seems very interested in Michigan, and it probably wouldn’t be a stretch to position the Wolverines as his #1 choice.  However, he also has offers from Illinois, Notre Dame, and Ohio State, and lots more are sure to come.  The 6’6″, 280 lb. prospect already has great size, pretty good feet, and solid technique, and he’s just a rising sophomore.

OFF THE BOARD
Akron (OH) St. Vincent-St. Mary’s linebacker Dante Booker, Jr. committed to Ohio State.  He was always considered to be an Ohio State lean but was very quiet about his recruitment.  This might open the door a little bit for Clairton (PA) Thomas Jefferson linebacker Chase Winovich to commit to Michigan over Ohio State, but the last time I made a similar statement (when Sam Hubbard picked the Buckeyes), Kyle Berger went ahead and chose them, too.  I guess they’re all in a race to be the next Andy Katzenmoyer.
