Charles Thomas, Ex-Wolverine

Charles Thomas

Redshirt freshman linebacker Charles Thomas has entered the transfer portal. Thomas committed to Michigan in June of 2017 as a part of the class of 2019 (LINK). Despite some early optimism, I gave him a TTB Rating of 69 largely because he just can’t run very well (LINK).

2020 Season Countdown: #43 Charles Thomas

Charles Thomas

Name: Charles Thomas
Height: 6’0”
Weight: 233 lbs.
High school: Oakdale (CT) St. Thomas More
Position: Linebacker
Class: Redshirt freshman
Jersey number: #13
Last year: I ranked Thomas #96 and said he would redshirt (LINK). He redshirted.
TTB Rating: 69

When Thomas entered last year, it seemed inevitable that he would redshirt. Linebacker is not an easy position to learn, and Michigan generally leans on three inside linebackers. With Josh Ross, Devin Gil, Cameron McGrone, and Jordan Glasgow available, Thomas was at best the #5 inside ‘backer. Thus the redshirt.

I have heard varying reports about Thomas. Some reports have him playing a key backup role as the only veteran inside linebacker. Others have him behind freshmen. My guess is that he will factor in as a backup, based largely on his having a year in the system. (Keep in mind that guys like Drew Singleton, Devin Gil, and Jordan Anthony have all transferred in the past couple seasons.)

Prediction: Backup linebacker

Final TTB Ratings for 2019

Daxton Hill

Help out the blog by making purchases at Amazon from links like this one (LINK):

I know it’s a little bit late in the game, but back in the spring, I didn’t have time to review all the senior film for Michigan’s 2019 signees and give them updated TTB Ratings. I did that during the 2019 Season Countdown, so here are the final TTB Ratings for the class of 2019.

S Daxton Hill: 100
He’s the best safety in the class, though it’s an unimpressive safety class overall.

RB Zach Charbonnet: 83 90
As long as he can get/stay healthy, Charbonnet has the potential to be a high draft pick in the future.

DT Chris Hinton, Jr.: 90
He should be an early contributor with high long-term upside.

2019 Season Countdown: #96 Charles Thomas

Charles Thomas (image via MGoBlue)

Name: Charles Thomas
Height: 5’11”
Weight: 224 lbs.
High school: Oakdale (CT) St. Thomas More
Position: Linebacker
Class: Freshman
Jersey number: N/A
Last year: Thomas was a senior in high school (LINK). He made 49 tackles, 15 tackles for loss, 1 sack, and a 44-yard punt return for a touchdown.
TTB Rating: N/A

Thomas is a tough prospect to pin down – figuratively and figuratively. (Not literally, because that would just be mean.) Not only has he attended three high schools – Langston Hughes in GA, IMG Academy in FL, and St. Thomas More in CT – but his highlights are a bit scattered. He’s listed on Michigan’s signing day info as being 5’11” and 224 lbs., even though those are often exaggerated, and he was listed as a recruit at 6’0″. So he’s probably 5’10”.

As for his play on the field, it doesn’t appear to be too impressive. He doesn’t show a lot of sideline-to-sideline speed, and his physicality is combined with less than stellar technique. He could be a thumping two-down middle linebacker, but those are a thing of the past. Can he improve his speed and coverage? If not, I’m afraid he’ll be playing from behind throughout his career. I expect him to redshirt while those things get sorted out.

Prediction: Redshirt
