Five Things to Watch in Michigan’s Spring Game

HOW DOES BRANDON PETERS LOOK?
The Maize Team will be quarterbacked by Wilton Speight and presumed #2 guy John O’Korn, which leaves redshirt freshman Brandon Peters as the signal caller for the Blue team. Did the Maize team draft two quarterbacks to prevent the Blue team from having a competent quarterback? Or did the Blue team truly rank Peters above O’Korn? O’Korn and Peters have reportedly gone back and forth at times during spring practices, but it would be a significant step forward for Peters if the coaches think he’s the #2 option. After all, O’Korn has started numerous games in his career at Houston and then against Indiana last season.

Michigan vs. Michigan State Awards

Eddie McDoom

Let’s see more of this guy on offense . . . Eddie McDoom. Freshman backup wide receiver McDoom actually led the team in rushing with 53 yards on just 2 carries (33 yards, 20 yards). He’s the fifth leading rusher on the team, behind the four primary running backs (Chris Evans, De’Veon Smith, Ty Isaac, Karan Higdon) and ahead of Jabrill Peppers and Jehu Chesson. I wouldn’t recommend running more jet sweeps, but I do think the offensive staff could afford to spread the field a little more at times and use McDoom in the passing game. He has the speed to threaten teams deep, and he could also be used on bubble screens, crack screens, and such. Michigan has sprung Amara Darboh for some deep throws this year, but the short and intermediate zones can get clogged with all the tight ends and fullbacks. I would like to see some formations with Darboh, Chesson, and McDoom, which might cause some defensive coordinators and defensive backs some consternation.

Michigan vs. Wisconsin Awards

Let’s see more of this guy on offense . . . Jabrill Peppers. Peppers played some Wildcat quarterback and flipped the ball to Jehu Chesson on a reverse, but he didn’t register in the offensive stat book. Michigan struggled to score points and averaged a mediocre 4.0 yards/carry, taking a 7-7 lead into the fourth quarter before scoring the game-winning touchdown with fewer than eight minutes left. So far this year, Peppers has 2 carries for 24 yards. Maybe Michigan doesn’t need him much against Rutgers next week, but they will need his contributions down the road.

2016 Season Countdown: #49 David Long, Jr.

David Long 171x

Check out the forum for recent threads on Ezekiel Elliott (LINK), a very well done hype video (LINK), and others.

Name: David Long, Jr.
Height: 6’0″
Weight: 187 lbs.
High school: Los Angeles (CA) Loyola
Position: Cornerback
Class: Freshman
Jersey number: #22
Last year: Long was a senior in high school (LINK). He made 19 tackles, 5 pass breakups, and 1 interception on defense; he also caught 25 passes for 525 yards and 7 touchdowns on offense.
Final TTB Rating: 92

Long was offered by Michigan’s new staff shortly after they were hired, and while he seemed interested in Michigan, he ended up committing to Stanford. Despite being accepted by such an elite school, he ended up decommitting in December and considering either Michigan or Washington. That led to kind of a hilarious time when Washington mods at 247 Sports were extremely insistent about him committing to the Huskies and dismissive of Michigan’s chances. Obviously, Michigan came out on top in his recruitment.

I was pulling for Long to become a Wolverine, because I think he’s a very solid overall prospect. At a listed 6’0″, 187 lbs., I think he’s more physically ready to play than a lot of freshman cornerbacks. He can be physical, he has good speed, he’s smart, and he’s dangerous with the ball in his hands (as evidenced by averaging 21 yards/catch as a senior). Michigan needs to get some guys ready to play corner in 2017, because three seniors are graduating after this season. Due to his size and relative polish, I think Long might be the top non-senior cornerback and jump ahead of Keith Washington, Brandon Watson, and fellow freshman Lavert Hill.

Prediction: Backup cornerback
