George Johnson III, Ex-Wolverine

Stuart (FL) Martin cornerback George Johnson III announced on Wednesday that he was entering the transfer portal.

Johnson was a high school dual-threat quarterback who was bound for either wide or defensive back in college. He was a 247 Composite 3-star, the #60 athlete, and #876 overall in the class of 2019. I initially gave him a TTB Rating of 73 (LINK) before eventually giving a 58 (LINK).

Johnson redshirted in 2019, did not play in any games in 2020, and played in three contests this past season, making just 1 tackle. In the off-season some Michigan receivers said he was the most difficult cornerback to shake, but that didn’t translate to the game field for whatever reason. It was always going to be tough for him to climb the depth chart at Michigan, considering the position switch and the other talent. But it didn’t help that Michigan signed a bunch of defensive backs in this 2022 class, at least a couple of whom would probably jump ahead of him pretty quickly.

Joining RB Zach Charbonnet (UCLA), OG Nolan Rumler (Kent State), LB Anthony Solomon (Arizona), WR Giles Jackson (Washington), OG Zach Carpenter (Indiana), and LB Charles Thomas (unknown), Johnson is the seventh player from the 2019 class to transfer.

Johnson has spent two years on Michigan’s campus now, and he has yet to play a down. After coming in as a receiver, he switched to cornerback prior to the 2020 season. Despite some terrible cornerback play – albeit in a shortened season – Johnson didn’t play, even on special teams. In today’s college football world, year three is pretty much a now-or-never situation. If he finds himself buried on the bench this fall, this might be his final year in Ann Arbor.

Prediction: Backup cornerback

Johnson had a pretty quiet first year in Ann Arbor, which was fully expected. A high school quarterback, he spent the 2019 season transitioning to wide receiver. He earned Offensive Scout Team Player of the Week for the Illinois game, but otherwise, things were pretty quiet.

Now Johnson has reportedly moved to cornerback, his third position in three years. Michigan does not have a lot of depth at cornerback, but I would expect Johnson to be at or near the bottom of the depth chart. He didn’t even have spring ball to help get acclimated to the position, so players he might have surged past are probably still watching him in the rearview mirror. I expect this season to be another year of mostly standing on the sideline.

A couple wrap-up items from recent days on players with decisions to make:

• Nick Eubanks is returning for a fifth year at tight end, which is good because I don’t think he would get drafted in 2020.
• Kwity Paye is returning for his senior year at defensive end, which is also good because I don’t think his draft stock would be very high.
• It sounds like Ambry Thomas is coming back, although he hasn’t come out with that decision as definitively as the first two.

I know it’s a little bit late in the game, but back in the spring, I didn’t have time to review all the senior film for Michigan’s 2019 signees and give them updated TTB Ratings. I did that during the 2019 Season Countdown, so here are the final TTB Ratings for the class of 2019.

S Daxton Hill: 100
He’s the best safety in the class, though it’s an unimpressive safety class overall.

RB Zach Charbonnet: 83 90
As long as he can get/stay healthy, Charbonnet has the potential to be a high draft pick in the future.

DT Chris Hinton, Jr.: 90
He should be an early contributor with high long-term upside.
