Michigan vs. Notre Dame Awards

Let’s see more of this guy on offense . . . Hassan Haskins. Haskins had 20 carries for 149 yards. This is just an affirmation of his fantastic overall play over the past few weeks, not necessarily a request to see him get more than 20 carries. Those 20 attempts included a 49-yard run, a highlight-reel hurdle, and lots of broken tackles. He’s averaging 6.2 yards per carry on the year.

Michigan 45, Notre Dame 14

Michigan beat a top-10 team. I normally don’t pay much attention to rankings. I pay attention to teams. So when people make a big deal about “Jim Harbaugh has a 1-10 record against top-10 teams at Michigan” or whatever the hell that stat is/was, it just doesn’t mean much to me. What’s his overall record? And has he beaten PSU, MSU, Wisconsin, and OSU? And Notre Dame? Those are the teams you can count on year in and year out to be good to great, and those are the measuring stick games. Sometimes they’re the top-10 squads and sometimes they’re not, but rankings are so subjective that they just don’t matter to me.

Michigan 42, Illinois 25

Boy, Rutgers must be really bad. I mean, Rutgers is bad. We know this. And Illinois is bad, too. But there are different levels of bad. Illinois was missing its starting quarterback (Michigan transfer Brandon Peters), and backups Matt Robinson and Isaiah Williams helped the Illini score 25 points. Meanwhile, Rutgers didn’t look like a viable FBS team in a 52-0 loss to the Wolverines.

2019 Season Countdown: #64 Hassan Haskins

Hassan Haskins (image via Wolverines Wire)

Name: Hassan Haskins
Height:
6’1″
Weight:
212 lbs.
High school:
Eureka (MO) Eureka
Position:
Running back
Class:
Redshirt freshman
Jersey number:
#25
Last year:
I ranked Haskins #89 and said he would redshirt (LINK). He played in three games.
TTB Rating:
74

Haskins spent the 2018 season bouncing back and forth between running back and linebacker. It seemed like he was bound for linebacker until the great mass exodus of running backs hit, removing Karan Higdon (senior), Chris Evans (dumb mistake), and O’Maury Samuels (allegedly really dumb mistake) from the roster. Now the dearth of running backs creates a need for someone like Haskins to be ready to contribute, especially because true freshman Zach Charbonnet had knee surgery in the spring.

All that being said, Haskins is still probably buried on the depth chart at running back. If Charbonnet comes back healthy, the trio of Charbonnet, Tru Wilson, and Christian Turner seem likely to eat up most of the carries. But injuries happen, so maybe Haskins slips into a contributing role at some point. He will be battling against the likes of redshirt freshman fullback/tailback Ben Van Sumeren, who played quite a bit in the spring with the absence of Charbonnet.

Prediction: Backup running back, special teamer
