Recruiting Snapshot: Maryland

2017 Team Ranking: #18. Maryland signed eight 4-stars and twenty 3-stars.

Cream of the 2017 Crop: Is it possible that anyone’s better than wide receiver/cornerback Fofie Bazzie? I think not. It’s not often this can be said, but it’s hard to determine which player is the crown jewel of Maryland’s class because there are so many good options. The highest ranked player is Hyattsville (MD) DeMatha’s Anthony McFarland, Jr., a running back who missed most of his senior year with a leg injury. He’s the #100 overall player in the class and has some big-play ability. The Terps also landed Oxon Hill (MD) Potomac cornerback Deon Jones (#175 overall), Bridgeton (NJ) Bridgeton safety Markquese Bell (#191 overall), and Washington (DC) St. John’s quarterback Kasim Hill (#240 overall), all skill guys who could be difference-makers at the next level. In addition, Maryland has really struggled in the trenches in recent years, but they signed DeMatha offensive guard Marcus Minor (#225 overall) and Owings Mills (MD) McDonough offensive tackle Jordan McNair (#285 overall). Hill is a guy who looked pretty good, especially as a runner, in the Under Armour All-American Game:

Recruiting Update: April 12, 2016

Brelin Faison-Walden 822x

Brelin Faison-Walden

If you would like to contribute to the site, consider making purchases on Amazon (LINK). Thanks for your help!

ADDED TO THE BOARD: 2017
Murrieta (CA) Valley wide receiver Maurice Bell was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’0″, 170 lb. prospect with offers from Iowa and Nebraska, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 3-star, the #92 wide receiver, and #603 overall. He’s a solid receiver with decent quickness who is tough to take to the ground.

Greensboro (NC) Grimsley linebacker Brelin Faison-Walden was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’1″, 197 lb. prospect with offers from Alabama, Florida State, and Georgia, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 3-star, the #33 safety, and #431 overall. I think Faison-Walden would fit in at Don Brown’s SAM linebacker position, where he could support the run and cover a little bit. I was unaware of him prior to Michigan’s offer, but I would not be disappointed if he joined Michigan’s class.

Hit the jump for a new 2018 offer, a commitment elsewhere, and some random bits.

Scouting Report: 2017 Quarterbacks

Dylan McCaffrey 693x

Since quarterback is such a key position, each year I like to go in-depth with the quarterback position and rank the prospects that Michigan is pursing. At times Michigan has offered so few prospects by this point in the year that I have to throw in a few with Michigan interest, but the Wolverines have offered ten signal-callers at this point, so that’s plenty good to start. Below is a ranked list of those ten quarterbacks. I ranked them based on their fit with Michigan’s offensive system, so if I were looking at this list as an Ohio State fan, a Washington State fan, or an Oregon fan, I might rank them differently.

1. Dylan McCaffrey – QB – Littleton (CO) Valor Christian: McCaffrey is a 6’5″, 200 lb. prospect who is uncommitted. He’s a 247 Composite 4-star, the #2 pro-style quarterback, and #45 overall. As a junior in 2015, he completed 207/320 passes (64.7%) for 2,800 yards, 27 TDs, and 4 INTs; he also ran 128 times for 592 yards (4.6 yards/carry) and 13 TDs. He is the son of former Stanford and NFL wide receiver Ed McCaffrey, as well as the brother of current Stanford running back – and Heisman finalist – Christian McCaffrey. In watching his junior year film, it became pretty clear why Michigan has him at or near the top of their board: he looks a great deal like Jake Rudock. McCaffrey is, of course, a couple inches taller than Rudock, but a lot of their mannerisms are very similar. McCaffrey is very balanced and unhurried in the pocket, and he does a nice job of standing tall and climbing in the pocket while waiting for the play to develop. He plays in a pro-style offense with dropbacks from under center, some shotgun passes, and an occasional designed run. He does good work with his ball handling and sees the field well. His anticipation is not on the same level as Bailey Hockman’s, but he makes good reads. McCaffrey is not a truly dynamic runner, but he is fast enough to escape and surprise some people with his speed. He has a nice over-the-top delivery, and with his height, that should prevent too many balls being batted down. NOTE: I scheduled this post for 6:30 a.m. on February 16th, and McCaffrey committed to Michigan on the evening of February 15th.

Hit the jump for the other nine quarterback targets.

Recruiting Update: November 25, 2015

Baltimore (MD) Gilman QB Kasim Hill (image via Maxpreps)

ADDED TO THE BOARD: 2016
Waterford (MI) Mott wide receiver Desmond Fitzpatrick decommitted from Louisville. Fitzpatrick, who holds a Michigan offer and is a former teammate of linebacker commit David Reese, is expected to commit to Nebraska at this point. At one time he was considered likely to flip to Michigan, but the staff seemed to cool on him. He’s a 247 Composite 4-star, the #53 wide receiver, and #272 overall.

ADDED TO THE BOARD: 2017
Cincinnati (OH) St. Xavier offensive guard Matt Bockhorst was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’4″, 290 lb. prospect with offers from Clemson, Michigan State, Ohio State, and Penn State, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 4-star, the #7 offensive guard, and #293 overall. He is thought to be pretty open at this point in his recruiting process. Bockhorst is a thickly built kid who will probably end up playing on the interior due to a lack of foot quickness.
