Is it Peters time? The biggest story is obviously the appearance of redshirt freshman Brandon Peters. I said before the game that I didn’t think Peters would play unless John O’Korn got hurt or unless Michigan went up big, and I was wrong. I wasn’t really expecting two fumbled snaps, either. O’Korn was 3/6 for 13 yards and 1 interception before getting yanked for redshirt freshman Brandon Peters in the second quarter. Peters entered the game when it was 7-7, and the offense rattled off 21 unanswered points. He went 10/14 for 124 yards and 1 touchdown in that time. Following the game, Jim Harbaugh said this has been brewing for a couple weeks, and he also told the team on Monday that Peters would get a chance to play in this one. Peters looked outstanding in this game except for a) one slant that might have been a pick-six if safety Kiy Hester didn’t have stone hands and b) a deep crossing route to Sean McKeon that fell short, not because of arm strength but due to misjudging the distance. He’s still finding his way as a player a little bit. His play was encouraging, but O’Korn looked great when he played against Purdue, too. Now that teams have film on Peters, sledding might get a little tougher in the coming weeks.

2017 Season Countdown: #23 Michael Dwumfour

Last year: I ranked Dwumfour #97 and said he would redshirt. He played in two games, making 2 tackles and 1 tackle for loss.

Dwumfour entered college in 2016 looking like he needed to reshape his body a little bit and add some weight. He was listed at 286 lbs., which is on the lighter side for a defensive tackle, but he was a little soft in the middle. The coaching staff liked him enough to play him early, but he didn’t see any time beyond the Penn State game in late September.

Now Dwumfour has shot up the charts – at least the countdown chart – because of the dearth of defensive tackles. Starters Maurice Hurst, Jr. and Bryan Mone look to be solid to very good, but after that, Michigan is counting on Dwumfour and freshman Aubrey Solomon, among others, to contribute. Dwumfour missed a big chunk of the spring with shoulder problems, enough that the coaching staff bumped weakside end Ron Johnson all the way down to 3-tech. Johnson is back to playing end, but the Wolverines need Dwumfour healthy to eat some snaps at a physically demanding position. He has earned some hype for his performance when healthy, but as the undersized Hurst’s primary backup, Michigan could have some serious depth issues if they start to get dinged up inside.

Last year: Dwumfour was a senior in high school (LINK). He made 55 tackles, 21 TFLs, and 7 sacks.

Dwumfour committed to Penn State last summer, and he stayed committed to the Nittany Lions until January. In the meantime, he was a teammate of Michigan early enrollee – and one-time Ohio State commit – Kareem Walker and a very good friend of eventual Michigan signee Rashan Gary. When the Wolverines stepped forward with an offer, it seemed like a bit of a reach for the Wolverines, which prompted rumors that Michigan was just reaching out to Dwumfour in order to seal the deal with Gary and rubbed Gary’s mom the wrong way in the process. Whether that rumor is true or not, Dwumfour committed to the Wolverines in January, a little over a week before Gary committed on National Signing Day.

Michigan has depth on the defensive line, so his contributions should not be needed this season. He was rated in some places as a strongside end, but I believe he will be more of a defensive tackle. At 6’2″ he doesn’t have great height for an end because most offensive tackles would have a significant reach advantage, so he’s probably a bit of a tweener like former Michigan defensive lineman Jibreel Black. Dwumfour has the versatility to play strongside end, 3-tech, or nose tackle, depending on the package, but I think he lacks the size to be a real difference-maker on the interior. He could be a very solid backup, but that’s probably a year or two down the road when Ryan Glasgow, Chris Wormley, Taco Charlton, and perhaps others move on to the NFL.

Best Overall Recruit: DT Rashan Gary
There’s no real suspense this year. Gary is the consensus #1 player in the country, and I gave him a TTB Rating of 100. He is awesome at the football.

Best Offensive Recruit: TE Devin Asiasi
I think the combination of Asiasi’s athleticism and Jim Harbaugh’s propensity for developing tight ends will do great things for Asiasi’s profile.

Best Defensive Recruit: DT Rashan Gary
