Possible position changes for Roh and Beyer

I received an e-mail this morning from someone who went to this weekend’s coaching clinic.  Greg Mattison apparently mentioned that Craig Roh is moving to strongside defensive end, and Brennen Beyer is moving from SAM to weakside end.  This seems to be the best move for Michigan’s current personnel, and I always thought Beyer would be better off as a weakside end than a SAM.  This also seems to indicate that the coaches are enamored with rising sophomore Frank Clark, who terrorized Virginia Tech in the Sugar Bowl.

Suspected Position Changes Confirmed

Tight end-turned defensive end-turned tight end Steve Watson

A couple position changes have been confirmed by a paywalled article on Rivals:

1. William Campbell has moved back to defense.  Rich Rodriguez toyed with him on offense, which seemed silly in light of the considerable depth at the offensive guard position.  But unlike Rodriguez and his clunky defensive staff, Campbell will actually be playing the 3-tech defensive tackle position.  I can’t imagine the conversations in the former defensive staff’s meeting rooms.  “Well, we’ve got this 6’5” behemoth with loads of talent, but his one problem is that he can’t stay low and get leverage.  We just can’t figure out what to do with him.  What to do, what to do.  Oh.  My.  God.  I have an awesome idea!  Let’s put him at nose tackle, the defensive line position where leverage is most important.  Surely our 6’2″ center won’t make him look like a fool on a daily basis!”  Perhaps that’s reason #238 why Rich Rodriguez forcing a 3-3-5 on a bewildered defensive coordinator was a bad idea.

2. Steve Watson has once again become a tight end.  This is a good move for Watson and for the team.  He was buried on the depth chart as an outside linebacker and defensive end the past couple seasons, notching a total of 6 tackles in that span.  He’ll probably still be sitting behind starter Kevin Koger and redshirt junior Brandon Moore, but this will allow Michigan to run some sets with three tight ends in short yardage and near the goalline.  The Wolverines pulled in a talented tight end, Chris Barnett, in the 2011 class.  However, Barnett is coming off a serious knee injury, needs to work on his body, and won’t arrive on campus until this summer.  This move may allow the freshman to redshirt.

It’s a free-for-all!

Spring practice started on Saturday, and reports from that practice indicate that all hell has broken loose on the defensive side of the ball. Players are moving all over the place in Greg Robinson’s defense. Some of these moves are immediately good. Some are head-scratchers.

One big rumor is that Steve Brown is moving to linebacker. He’s still listed as a safety on the roster, but he’s bulked up to 215 pounds (he’s been around 205 in previous years). He’s supposedly working out at SAM linebacker. Although he’s a bit undersized for a SAM, he’s good in run support, a good blitzer, and would probably be better in pass coverage than most linebackers. Since he hasn’t been a very good safety, I would put this move in the “good” category, if it’s true.

In position drills, freshman early enrollee Brandin Hawthorne was working out with the safeties. The spring roster listed him at 195, but eyewitnesses have said he looks like he’s well over 200 pounds now, perhaps in the 215 lb. range. From watching his high school film, I don’t think he’d make a good safety. And considering that our linebacker depth isn’t…well…deep, then this would seem curious. Of course, Mike Jones and Isaiah Bell might move from safety to linebacker, so the effect on the actual numbers might be negligible. Also…

Anthony Lalota was seen working with the linebackers. As pointed out a couple days ago, Lalota is apparently 6’4″ and 235 lbs. instead of 6’6″, 260, so his size doesn’t necessarily preclude him from being a linebacker. But considering the Wolverines’ serious lack of depth on the defensive line, my guess is that Lalota might be working out to play the “spinner” (Robinson’s hybrid DE/OLB position) or they might want him to continue working on his agility in open space, since that’s one of his weaknesses coming out of high school.

Also, Vince Helmuth is now a defensive tackle and there’s photographic evidence to support Rodriguez’s claim that he’s a little heavy.
