Ex-Wolverine Updates: Week 5

Jay Hopson

Former WR/S Brian Cole II: Cole made 3 tackles, blocked a punt, and returned a fumble 50 yards for a touchdown in East Mississippi Community College’s 73-7 victory over Mississippi Delta Community College. Below is his five-game highlight film from this season:

Former CB commit Gareon Conley: Conley made 2 tackles in Ohio State’s 58-0 demolition of Rutgers.

Former defensive coordinator D.J. Durkin: Durkin improved to 4-0 as a head coach as Maryland beat Purdue, 50-7.

Former RB commit Damien Harris: Harris had 2 carries for 11 yards in Alabama’s 34-6 win over Kentucky. Harris is the starter but left the previous week’s game early with an ankle injury.

Spring Football Preview: Cornerbacks

Jourdan Lewis 751x

Jourdan Lewis

Projected starters: Senior Jourdan Lewis had an All-America season last year when he made 52 tackles, 3.5 TFLs, 1 sack, 2 INTs (1 TD), and a school-record 20 pass breakups. The other side is a bit murkier, but senior Channing Stribling may be the best bet. He started four games last season and finished with 17 tackles, 2 INTs, and 3 pass breakups, including picking off a botched fake field goal by Florida in the bowl game.

Terry Richardson, Ex-Wolverine

Terry Richardson

Michigan cornerback/safety Terry Richardson is using the graduate transfer exception to look for other opportunities to play football. He will be a fifth year senior in the fall and eligible to play immediately.

Richardson committed to Michigan in May 2011 (LINK) as part of the 2012 class. A highly touted high school recruit, I thought at the time that he was a very good get for the Wolverines. He was a bigger playmaker in high school than a lot of other Cass Tech cornerbacks of the era. It should be noted that none reached high levels of success in college, and now Jourdan Lewis appears to have taken over that mantle.

Michigan releases spring 2015 roster

Brady Pallante is a fullback now. Brady Pallante is not #23.

Michigan released its spring roster on Monday as the Wolverines begin spring practice on Tuesday (LINK). Here are some notable updates to the roster.

Ian Bunting: Bunting is up to 6’7″ and 243 lbs. Michigan needs help at tight end this fall, so 243 lbs. is a good sign of him developing physically. He should be up over 250 lbs. by the fall.

Brian Cole: Cole, a true freshman early enrollee, is wearing #81. He’s listed at 6’2″, 200 lbs.

Ross Douglas: Douglas was recruited as a cornerback, moved to slot receiver, moved to running back, and now is back at corner. Still wearing #29, he is now listed as Ross Taylor-Douglas.

Derrick Green: Green is listed at 5’11” and 234 lbs.

Ty Isaac: Isaac is listed at 6’3″ and 240 lbs.

Alex Malzone: Malzone, a true freshman early enrollee, is wearing #12. He’s listed at 6’2″, 218 lbs.

Brady Pallante: Pallante came to Michigan as a nose tackle prospect and is now listed as a redshirt freshman, 6’0″, 276 lb. fullback wearing #45.

Terry Richardson: Richardson is listed as a redshirt junior cornerback and is finally nearing close-to-acceptable weight at 174 lbs. at 5’9″.

Matt Thompson: Thompson is a new addition as a walk-on quarterback from Cincinnati (OH) Indian Hills. He’s listed at 6’5″, 214 lbs. as a redshirt freshman. Here are Thompson’s Hudl highlights from his senior year (LINK). His delivery is a little bit wonky, but he doesn’t look too bad for a walk-on. He’s not a bad guy to have available for running a scout team and such. It also looks like he’s hit a growth spurt since high school.

Ryan Tice: Tice is a 6’1″, 177 lb. walk-on who enrolled early out of Saline (MI) Saline. I mainly note this because Michigan graduated both their punter and kicker, so Tice might be competing for one of those jobs, along with walk-on Kenny Allen (punter) and 2015 signee Andrew David (kicker).

2014 Season Countdown: #85 Terry Richardson

Terry Richardson

Name: Terry Richardson
Height: 5’9″
Weight: 172 lbs.
High school: Detroit (MI) Cass Tech
Position: Cornerback
Class: Redshirt sophomore
Jersey number: #13
Last year: I ranked Richardson #61 and said he would be a backup corner and special teams player. He did not play at all.

Richardson came into college with a lot of hype, even indicating that he was highly anticipating playing as a true freshman. Those expectations must have dipped quickly when he played a minuscule number of snaps as a true freshman in 2012 and then didn’t play at all in 2013. I’ll even admit that I thought Richardson was the best cover corner I had seen come out of Cass Tech since Michigan developed the pipeline in the late 2000’s, a series of corners that included Teric Jones, Boubacar Cissoko, Dior Mathis, Delonte Hollowell, and others. Then he tried to play the past couple seasons at roughly 160 lbs. That’s not exactly a recipe for success.

Now he stands at an imposing 172 lbs., but I have given up on Richardson as a heavy contributor until I see him start to make an impact. I have dropped him over 20 spots in the countdown, even behind a number of incoming freshman and some walk-ons. Michigan has some established cornerbacks, some true sophomores who earned quite a bit of playing time last year, and a heralded incoming freshman. I still believe Richardson has the smooth coverage abilities to be successful, but failing to put on weight suggests that he hasn’t bought into the college strength and conditioning (and nutrition) program. Unfortunately for him, it might be too little, too late, as younger guys have passed him on the depth chart. The talent is there, but he has to make up quite a bit of ground.

Prediction: Backup cornerback
