ADDED TO THE BOARD: 2019

Cincinnati (OH) Walnut Hills defensive tackle Jowon Briggs was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’2″, 275 lb. prospect with offers from Cincinnati, Kentucky, Ohio State, and Wisconsin, among others. Briggs is a bit sawed-off and looks like a pure nose tackle right now, but he’s only a sophomore and could add another inch or two to his height before he stops growing. He does a very nice job of using his hands, creating separation, and using leverage to beat offensive linemen.

Santa Ana (CA) Mater Dei quarterback J.T. Daniels was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’3″, 195 lb. prospect with offers from Cal, Notre Dame, UCLA, USC, and Washington, among others. He’s a 247 Sports 4-star, the #1 pro-style quarterback, and #7 overall. He’s the first quarterback to be offered by the Wolverines in the 2019 class. As a freshman in 2015, he completed 174/313 passes for 3,042 yards, 33 touchdowns, and just 4 interceptions. Meanwhile, here are this year’s highlights:

Santa Ana (CA) Mater Dei wide receiver Horace “Bru” McCoy was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’3″, 205 lb. prospect with offers from Alabama, Notre Dame, Oregon, USC, and Washington, among others. A teammate of Daniels, McCoy plays some wide receiver and linebacker, and he could end up at either of those two positions or at safety in college. You can see his highlights here (LINK).

that dude mccoy should be an interesting player to watch throughout his recruitment. 6’3″ 200 and making big plays and big hits as a true frosh – he could grow into a 235 lb beast at LB, stay on the leaner side and maybe play WR, or just not mature as much as the rest of his class, at least in proportion to his current frame and ability, and if thats the case theyll prob catch up. always interesting to see star freshmen 3-4 down the line and whether or how much they fall back to the pack

Yeah, I’m thinking he’ll end up somewhere other than WR eventually. He seems like a kid whose body is going to fill out and he’ll end up at outside linebacker.

I have a question on physical growth. Is it typical that a high school sophomore will add no more than an inch to his final height? I was the youngest in my class, and I graduated from high school at around 6’4″, but in college I added another 4 inches somewhere along the way. So I always read these recruiting profiles and wonder just how atypical I was.

I don’t have a great answer for you. It depends on the person. I think kids grow a lot from 8th to 10th grade, and then after that, it seems to mostly be muscle development. That’s not to say that kids don’t grow in 11th or 12th grade (or beyond), but things seem to slow down after 16 or so.
