Review of 2008 Recruiting: Wide Receivers

Darryl Stonum

I haven’t done one of these in a while, but here’s a look back at the 2008 recruiting class – one whole decade ago.

THE ROSTER

LaTerryal Savage (RS Jr.)
Greg Mathews (Jr.)
Zion Babb (So.)
Toney Clemons (So.)
Junior Hemingway (So.)
James Rogers (So.)

THE COMMITS

Martavious Odoms
High school: Pahokee (FL) Pahokee
Ratings: Rivals 3-star, #71 WR
College: Michigan
Other notable offers: Auburn, Miami, Notre Dame, West Virginia
Scoop: Odoms started 11 games as a true freshman, but his playing time and productivity diminished throughout his career. He made 94 career catches for 1,087 yards and 5 touchdowns. Interestingly, he only had 7 catches in his senior year of 2011, but 3 of them went for touchdowns. He also was a punt returner and scored 1 touchdown against Purdue as a true freshman. He was not drafted in 2012 and did not play beyond college.

Terrence Robinson
High school: Klein (TX) Oak
Ratings: Rivals 4-star, #9 APB
College: Michigan
Other notable offers: Nebraska, Oregon, TCU
Scoop: Robinson redshirted in 2008 and went on to make three career starts, all of which came in 2010. He caught 2 passes for 56 yards, returned 2 kickoffs for 27 yards, returned 1 punt for 11 yards, made 6 tackles on special teams, forced 1 fumble, and recovered 1 fumble. Those defensive statistics came entirely on special teams in 2011, Brady Hoke’s first year. He did not return for a fifth year and did not play professionally.

Roy Roundtree
High school: Trotwood (OH) Trotwood-Madison
Ratings: Rivals 4-star, #44 WR
College: Michigan
Other notable offers: Nebraska, Purdue
Scoop: Roundtree redshirted in 2008 and then had a bit of a breakout campaign out of nowhere in 2009. He caught 32 passes for 434 yards (30 for 390 yards in a four-game stretch) and 3 touchdowns. He was Second Team All-Big Ten in 2010 with 72 catches for 935 yards and 7 touchdowns. With the new coaching staff in 2011, he caught just 19 passes for 355 yards and 2 touchdowns. He capped his career with 31 catches for 550 yards and 3 touchdowns in 2012. In both of his final seasons, he averaged a healthy 18.7 yards/catch. His career-high of 246 receiving yards against Illinois in 2010 was #1 all-time at Michigan until Jeremy Gallon surpassed him with 369 against Indiana in 2013. Roundtree was not drafted in 2013, spent some time with the Cincinnati Bengals before getting cut, and played in the Indoor Football League. He was the wide receivers coach at Indiana State last year, where several of Brady Hoke’s staff members now reside, and he will be returning to Michigan as a graduate assistant in 2018.

Darryl Stonum
High school: Stafford (TX) Dulles
Ratings: Rivals 4-star, #7 WR, #41 overall
College: Michigan Baylor
Other notable offers: Alabama, Florida, Florida State, USC
Scoop: Stonum caught 14 passes for 176 yards and 1 touchdown as a freshman in 2008. As a sophomore in 2009, he caught 13 passes for 199 yards and 1 touchdown; he also returned 39 kickoffs for 1,001 yards and 1 touchdown, a 94-yarder against Notre Dame. In his junior year of 2010, he caught 49 passes for 633 yards and 4 touchdowns. Despite solid production, he was suspended by Brady Hoke for the 2011 season – a redshirt year – for having multiple incidents with alcohol. He transferred to Baylor for 2012, where he caught 3 passes for 51 yards and 1 touchdown. He was not drafted in 2013 and is out of football. He totaled 76 catches for 1,008 yards and 6 touchdowns at Michigan.

Hit the jump for a look at the rest of the receivers offered by Michigan in 2008, along with some thoughts on the class overall.

Kevin Doyle, Ex-Wolverine

Kevin Doyle

Washington (DC) St. John’s quarterback Kevin Doyle decommitted from Michigan on Sunday afternoon. He had been committed to Michigan since September. Doyle is a 3-star, the #23 pro-style quarterback, and #555 overall. He has other offers from Arizona, Boston College, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Nebraska, Ole Miss, Pitt, Syracuse, and West Virginia, among others.

I gave Doyle a TTB Rating of 76 (LINK), comparing him to the likes of Wilton Speight and John Navarre – decent quarterbacks, but not stars.

Doyle did not sign during the early signing period in December, and Michigan had been talking to him about going to prep school for a year and reclassifying to the 2019 class. Doyle had been aware of that plan for a while, but with a decent offer list, it always seemed like it might be difficult to convince him to spend an extra year in school when he doesn’t need it academically. He will presumably sign with another FBS school, although it’s unclear at this moment which program is in the driver’s seat.

Michigan’s depth chart for 2018 now looks like this (listed in order of experience):

  1. Shea Patterson (Jr.)
  2. Brandon Peters (RS So.)
  3. Dylan McCaffrey (RS Fr.)
  4. Joe Milton (Fr.)

Super Bowl 52 Predictions

I’m torn on whether I want the Eagles or Patriots to win the Super Bowl tonight. On the one hand, I want Tom Brady to be cemented as the greatest QB of all-time, and it would be nice for Alan Branch and David Harris to get Super Bowl rings, too. On the other hand, Brandon Graham plays for the Eagles and doesn’t have a championship yet.

Nick Foles played out of his mind in the NFC Championship game, and I don’t think he’ll replicate that against the Patriots. So I’ll go with New England, 26-23.

What’s your prediction for the score? I’ll send you a $25 Amazon gift card if you’re the first to guess the correct winner and score.

Zeeland (MI) East DE Adam Berghorst (image via 247 Sports)

2018

Tariq Reid – RB – Davison (MI) Davison: Reid is a 5’10”, 205 lb. prospect who is committed to Grand Valley State University. He’s a 247 Sports 2-star, the #159 running back, and #2589 overall. He has been offered a preferred walk-on spot at Michigan. As a senior in 2017, Reid ran 141 times for 1,149 yards and 12 touchdowns.

2019

Adam Berghorst – DE – Zeeland (MI) East: Berghorst is a 6’7″, 245 lb. prospect with offers from Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, and Michigan State, among others. He’s a 247 Sports 3-star, the #38 strongside end, and #469 overall. His brother, Johnathan Berghorst, just finished his freshman year as a defensive end at Central Michigan. Adam Berghorst also visited Michigan last weekend.

Marcel Lewis – LB – Clinton Township (MI) Chippewa Valley: Lewis is a 6’1″, 205 lb. prospect with offers from Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, and Purdue, among others. He’s a 247 Sports 3-star, the #17 inside linebacker, and #519 overall. This is his first visit to Michigan as an offered prospect.

Nolan Rumler – OG – Akron (OH) Hoban: Rumler is committed to Michigan (LINK).

Mazi Smith – DT – Kentwood (MI) East Kentwood: Smith is a 6’3″, 290 lb. prospect with offers from Alabama, Georgia, Michigan, Notre Dame, and Ohio State, among others. He’s a 4-star, the #8 defensive tackle, and #120 overall. While Notre Dame has 50% of the Crystal Ball picks right now, I’ve heard Michigan is the leader for him.

Paul Tyson – QB – Trussville (AL) Hewitt Trussville: Tyson is a 6’4″, 210 lb. prospect with offers from Alabama, Notre Dame, Oregon, and USC, among others. He’s a 4-star, the #6 pro-style quarterback, and #293 overall. He was offered by Pep Hamilton on Wednesday and plans to visit this weekend. As a junior in 2017, he threw for 3,392 yards and 36 touchdowns with just 4 interceptions. As an Alabama native, right now 100% of the Crystal Ball picks are in favor of the Crimson Tide.

2020

Caden Clark – TE – Akron (OH) Hoban: Clark is a 6’4″, 241 lb. prospect with offers from Cincinnati, Kentucky, West Virginia . . . and now Michigan, who offered during his visit. Clark is a teammate of Rumler (see above).

Justin Rogers – OG – Oak Park (MI) Oak Park: Rogers is a 6’2″, 289 lb. prospect with offers from Arizona and Ohio State, along with several others. He picked up an offer from Michigan on this weekend’s visit.

DeaMonte Trayanum – LB – Akron (OH) Hoban: Trayanum is a 6’0″, 205 lb. prospect with offers from Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, and West Virginia. He’s another teammate of Rumler (see above).
